Chapter 13 - The Collapse of the Dynasty

The courtroom instantly detonated into pure, unadulterated chaos.
Reporters surged against the wooden press railing, flashing cameras and furiously typing on laptops. Evelyn let out a guttural, panicked screech, struggling so violently against her chain restraints that two bailiffs had to physically pin her shoulders to the defense table.
In the fourth row, Richard Garrison’s mask of cultured sophistication dissolved in a split second. He shoved past two spectators, knocking a bailiff’s clipboard to the floor, and bolted toward the heavy double doors at the back of the courtroom.
“Federal Marshals! Stand down! Freeze!”
Detective Alvarez and six plainclothes federal agents stepped out from behind the mahogany pillars, their Glock 19s drawn and leveled in a synchronized arc.
“On the ground, Richard!” Alvarez barked. “Down on your face! Hands behind your head!”
Richard Garrison looked around wildly. The exit was blocked. The jury box was secured. Every camera in Central Texas was pointing at his face. Realizing that ten years of offshore hiding, forged identities, and stolen millions had evaporated in the span of thirty seconds, he slowly dropped to his knees on the carpeted floor.
Deputy marshals pinned his arms, ratcheting heavy steel cuffs around his wrists with a sharp, echoing click.
“Order! ORDER IN THIS COURT!” Judge Carter slammed her gavel repeatedly, the wood cracking against the sound block until the room finally subdued into a tense, breathless silence. “Bailiffs, clear the gallery of all non-essential personnel! Secure the defendant and the newly apprehended suspect!”
Julian Montgomery stood frozen at the defense lectern, his face completely drained of color, his hands trembling as he realized he had unwittingly filed federal briefs directly funded by a fugitive wanted for thirty million dollars in federal bank fraud and attempted murder.
“Your Honor,” Montgomery stammered, his polished courtroom persona in tatters. “I… I had no knowledge of Mr. Graves’s true identity. I move to withdraw as counsel of record immediately.”
“We will deal with your professional misconduct and your law license in due time, Mr. Montgomery,” Judge Carter said, her voice freezing with judicial fury. “Sit down and do not utter another word.”
Judge Carter turned her gaze to the prosecution table, where Sarah Morrison, Detective Alvarez, and I stood side by side.
“Ms. Morrison, summarize the State’s position on the defense’s habeas petition,” the judge commanded.
Sarah stepped forward, her posture regal and uncompromising. “Your Honor, the State moves for an immediate and prejudice-backed dismissal of the defendant’s petition. Furthermore, the United States Attorney’s Office is filing a superseding federal indictment against Evelyn Vance-Garrison, Richard Garrison, and their associated financial entities under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act.”
Sarah laid out the digital paper trail: the Swiss bank transfers, the IP addresses linking Richard’s penthouse to the attempted arson at my home the previous night, and the biometric facial recognition data confirming that ‘Roland Graves’ was indeed Richard Garrison, complete with matching fingerprints extracted from his decades-old Texas driver’s license records.
When Sarah finished, Judge Carter did not even hesitate.
“The defense’s motion for a writ of habeas corpus is DENIED WITH PREJUDICE,” Judge Carter ruled, her gavel falling like a sledgehammer. “The conviction and life sentence of Evelyn Vance-Garrison stand unaltered. Evelyn Vance-Garrison will be remanded immediately to administrative segregation at the Mountain View High-Security Unit in Gatesville. Richard Garrison will be held without bond at the Federal Detention Center in Bastrop pending trial on charges of conspiracy to commit capital murder, federal wire fraud, and aggravated racketeering.”
As the marshals hauled Richard toward the prisoner holding cells, he passed within inches of Evelyn.
For the first time in their lives, the two masterminds looked at each other not as partners in crime, but as the architects of each other’s total destruction.
“You fool,” Evelyn hissed at her brother, tears of rage and humiliation streaming down her wrinkled face. “You couldn't even burn a wooden sign! You destroyed everything!”
“Shut up, Evelyn!” Richard snarled back, thrashing in his chains. “You’re the one who got recorded on a ten-dollar burner phone by a girl you thought you could starve!”
The iron door of the cell block slammed shut behind them, cutting off their mutual hatred forever.
I stood at the prosecution table, watching the heavy metal latch lock into place.

The last pillar of their empire had fallen. There were no more secret accounts. There were no more hidden uncles in Europe. There were no more shadows waiting in the tree line.
The nightmare was finally, irrevocably dead.
