Chapter 10 - The Resurrection of a Monster

The silence in the office after the call disconnected was deafening. The name Richard Garrison hung in the air like a poisonous vapor.

During the initial trial, the official family history stated that Evelyn’s late husband had a younger brother, Richard, a wealthy commercial developer who had supposedly perished in an unrecovered private aircraft crash over the Gulf of Mexico a decade ago. Life insurance had been paid, estates had been settled, and Richard Garrison had become a distant footnote in the Vance-Garrison family tree.

Now, if Marcus was telling the truth, that entire tragedy was simply the prototype of the very insurance fraud scheme that had nearly cost me my life.

Detective Alvarez arrived at our office forty minutes later, accompanied by two federal marshals. The moment he heard Marcus’s recorded phone call, his easygoing demeanor vanished, replaced by the grim focus of a veteran homicide investigator.

“Richard Garrison was the primary architect of three commercial real estate developments in North Houston during the early 2000s,” Alvarez said, pulling up archival police files and death certificates on his laptop. “When his companies started collapsing under thirty million dollars of fraudulent bank loans in 2014, his twin-engine Cessna went down thirty miles off the coast of Galveston. Coast Guard found wreckage, fuel slicks, and an empty life raft. They never recovered a body.”

“And Evelyn was the administrator of his estate,” Sarah Morrison noted, pointing at the court documents. “She collected an eight-million-dollar key-man corporate life insurance policy six months later. That was the foundational capital used to create Crestview Holdings.”

“Exactly,” Alvarez confirmed. “If Richard survived, took on a false identity in Europe, and used Evelyn to launder the insurance money back into American assets, Marcus’s plea deal didn't just expose Evelyn. It threatened to dismantle Richard’s entire offshore empire. That Zurich account, Aegis Capital Group—it’s registered to a holding firm whose beneficial owner uses the pseudonym ‘Roland Graves.’ Look at the driver's license photo on this Swiss corporate registry from six months ago.”

Alvarez turned the screen toward me.

The man in the photograph was in his late fifties, with sharp, hawk-like features, steel-gray hair slicked back, and cold, pale-blue eyes that bore an unmistakable, chilling resemblance to Evelyn. It was the same haughty, predatory gaze that had watched me from the porch steps, refined by immense wealth and global anonymity.

“He’s in Austin,” I whispered, clutching the edge of the mahogany desk as a wave of panic threatened to pull me under. “Maya and Chloe. Alvarez, my daughters are at their elementary school right now!”

“Two unmarked marshal cruisers are already sitting outside their school gates, Elena,” Alvarez assured me firmly, putting a calming hand on my shoulder. “Nobody is getting near your girls. We’ve placed your residence under twenty-four-hour tactical surveillance. But we need to move fast. Montgomery’s motion for Evelyn’s evidentiary hearing is scheduled in front of Judge Cunningham in four days. Richard Garrison isn't just trying to spring Evelyn from prison; he’s trying to intimidate the witnesses before that hearing can take place.”

“He attacked Marcus inside a maximum-security prison,” Sarah pointed out, her legal mind working at light speed. “That means Richard has reached inside the correctional staff. We need to petition the Department of Justice for an emergency federal transfer for Marcus immediately. If Marcus is silenced or killed before he can testify regarding the forged Zurich affidavits, Montgomery might actually succeed in muddying the waters.”

“I’ll coordinate with the federal warden in Bastrop,” Alvarez said, grabbing his radio. “We’ll move Marcus under federal custody before nightfall.”

While Alvarez and Sarah began barking orders into their phones, I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the vibrant Austin skyline. Down below on the sunny avenue, normal people were walking their dogs, drinking iced coffees, and living lives untainted by the sinister machinations of generational monsters.

For years, I had thought Evelyn was the head of the serpent. I had believed that seeing her chained in a courtroom was the end of the nightmare. But evil rarely works in isolation; it builds networks, relies on cowards, and hides behind legal loopholes and offshore bank accounts.

I looked at my reflection in the glass. The frail, frightened immigrant girl who had tied her hopes to a broken ten-dollar phone was gone. In her place stood a woman who had fought through blood, courtroom battles, and public humiliation to build a sanctuary for the vulnerable.

Richard Garrison had stolen a decade of peace from this world. He had helped construct the machinery that crushed my unborn son. He believed that with his millions and his Swiss shell companies, he could terrify me back into silence.

He was wrong.

I turned back toward Sarah and Alvarez.

“We aren't just defending Evelyn’s conviction at that hearing,” I said, my voice cutting through the room with quiet, lethal certainty. “We are going to lay a trap. Richard Garrison staged his death ten years ago to steal millions and fund this family’s terror. We’re going to prove he’s alive, and we’re going to put him in the cell right next to his sister.”

Sarah’s eyes lit up with fierce determination. “How do you want to play it, Elena?”

“Julian Montgomery doesn't know we have that recorded phone call from Marcus yet,” I explained, stepping toward the whiteboard. “Montgomery thinks he holds the element of surprise with his bogus London audio expert. We let Montgomery file his supplemental affidavits. We let Richard believe his intimidation worked and that Marcus is terrified into silence. And when Richard shows up to watch Evelyn’s hearing from the gallery under his fake identity, we lock the courtroom doors.”

Alvarez smiled—a hard, dangerous grin. “Federal marshals at every exit. Facial recognition cameras on the public gallery. Let’s bring a ghost back to life.”
