Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Siege

Z

Three weeks later.

The high-rise headquarters of Vanguard Global Logistics in downtown Chicago towered seventy stories above the cold, wind-swept waves of Lake Michigan. Inside the executive boardroom on the top floor, twenty board members, corporate executives, and senior legal advisors sat around a massive oval glass table.

At the head of the table stood Marcus Vance, looking exhausted, his dark eyes shadowed by sleepless nights. Standing right beside him at the digital presentation podium was Maya Miller.

Maya tapped the touchscreen console, illuminating a series of high-resolution digital maps and encrypted network schematics projected onto the wall-sized display screen.

"Over the last fourteen days, my team at Miller Global Logistics has audited every single digital transit log within Vanguard’s Midwest distribution network," Maya stated, her voice carrying absolute authority that commanded the room. "What we uncovered was a sophisticated, lingering backdoor protocol installed by Chadwick Miller four months before his arrest. This backdoor was designed to clone automated shipping manifests for high-value cargo—specifically medical technology and rare metals—and re-route those signals to a private server registered in the Cayman Islands."

A senior board member leaned forward, clutching a pen. "And that server belongs to Victor Vance?"

"It belonged to Victor Vance until six o'clock this morning," Maya corrected him with a sharp, professional smile. "Working in direct coordination with the FBI's Cyber Crime Division, my team successfully flooded that server with a localized trace protocol, freezing forty million dollars in illicit trade transactions and identifying three corrupt facility managers within your Detroit regional warehouse."

The boardroom erupted into hushed whispers of astonishment. Marcus Vance let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief, leaning both hands against the table as he turned to look at Maya with profound gratitude.

"Maya, you have done in two weeks what our internal security department couldn't accomplish in three years," Marcus declared loudly so the entire board could hear. "You saved this corporation from absolute ruin."

Before Maya could respond, the heavy double doors at the back of the boardroom burst open with a violent thud.

Four men in dark, expensive suit jackets stepped into the room. Leading them was a man in his late fifties with silver hair swept back, icy blue eyes, and a broad, imposing frame. He walked with a polished, predatory grace, carrying a leather walking stick with a silver top.

It was Victor Vance.

The boardroom went dead silent. Two internal corporate security guards rushed toward the entrance, but Victor’s two bodyguards instantly blocked them, locking the doors behind them with a heavy magnetic click.

"Victor?" Marcus gasped, standing up so fast his leather chair rolled back into the glass window. "How did you get up here? Security!"

"Security is currently dealing with a sudden glitch in their elevator authorization systems, little brother," Victor said, his voice deep, gravelly, and dripping with arrogant contempt. He ignored his brother entirely, turning his icy blue gaze directly onto Maya Miller.

Victor walked slowly down the side of the long glass table, the metallic tip of his walking stick tapping sharply against the polished floor tile with every step. Click. Click. Click.

"So," Victor murmured, stopping ten feet from the podium where Maya stood. "You are the little suburban wife who destroyed my six-year investment in Chadwick Miller."

The room was suffocatingly quiet. Several board members cowered back into their seats, terrified by the sheer physical presence of the notorious Chicago syndicate boss. But Maya did not retreat a single inch. She stood tall behind the podium, her hands resting calmly on the digital control panel.

"I am Maya Miller," she replied, her eyes locked directly with his. "And you are currently committing felony criminal trespass on corporate property while out on a federal bond."

Victor let out a soft, low chuckle—a sound completely devoid of humor. "You have spirit, girl. I'll give you that. Chad always told me you were just a quiet, obedient clerk who did what she was told. He swore to me that you would never figure out where the money was going. He was an idiot, of course. A foolish, arrogant boy who couldn't even manage a cup of coffee without making a mess."

Victor stopped, leaning both hands on his walking stick as he leaned in slightly toward Maya.

"But you," Victor continued, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper meant only for her and Marcus. "You have become a very expensive problem for me. That little stunt you pulled this morning cost my investors forty million dollars. Do you have any idea what happens to people who steal forty million dollars from my investors, Miss Miller?"

Marcus Vance stepped between Victor and Maya, his face pale with fury. "Get out of here, Victor! The police are already on their way up! If you touch her, if you lay a single finger on anyone in this room, you will die in a federal penitentiary!"

Victor didn't even look at his brother. He simply raised his left hand, and one of his bodyguards pulled a small, high-tech signal jammer from his coat pocket, pressing a button on the side. The digital presentation screens on the wall instantly went black, and the room's overhead lights flickered before dropping into dim emergency red lighting.

"The police aren't coming up the elevator anytime soon, Marcus," Victor said softly. "The entire tower's emergency comms are jammed."

Victor turned back to Maya, pulling a thick folded paper from his inside jacket pocket and slapping it down onto the glass table.

"This is an asset transfer release," Victor stated plainly. "It assigns forty percent of your company, Miller Global Logistics, over to an offshore holding company, alongside an agreement to retract your forensic audit testimony from my federal trial. You sign it right now, Miss Miller, and you walk out of this tower unharmed. You refuse, and I guarantee you that by midnight tonight, every warehouse, every server, and every person tied to your firm will burn."

Maya looked down at the document on the glass table. Then she raised her eyes to look at Victor Vance.

For five years, she had lived under the shadow of a man who used violence, fear, and financial dominance to break her spirit. She had watched Chad scream, threaten, and throw boiling liquid at her face to force her compliance. Victor Vance was simply a bigger, richer, more powerful version of Chad.

A faint, brilliant smile touched Maya’s lips.

"You really don't get it, do you, Victor?" Maya said softly.

Victor frowned, his icy eyes narrowing. "Get what?"

Maya raised her right hand and tapped her earlobe, revealing a tiny, glowing green earbud that had been hidden beneath her dark hair.

"My security detail isn't controlled by Vanguard's internal guards," Maya explained smoothly. "My security detail is managed directly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Violent Crime Task Force. And unlike your jammer, my micro-transceiver operates on an encrypted satellite frequency that doesn't rely on cell towers or local Wi-Fi."

At that exact moment, the heavy double doors behind Victor were blown off their hinges with a deafening BOOM!

A flashbang grenade detonated in the hallway, filling the air with blinding white light and a shattering acoustic roar. Smoke poured into the room as six tactical FBI agents dressed in heavy body armor burst through the doorway, weapons raised and laser sights painted directly onto Victor Vance and his three bodyguards.

"FBI! DROP TO THE GROUND! DOWN ON THE FLOOR NOW!" tactical officers screamed, their voices echoing like thunder through the dim room.

Victor’s bodyguards immediately threw their hands into the air, dropping their weapons onto the floor as tactical agents tackled them to the ground. Victor Vance stood frozen, the silver tip of his walking stick slipping from his fingers as it clattered against the glass table. Red laser dots danced across his chest and forehead.

Maya walked out from behind the podium, stepping around the shattered glass of the entrance doors. She stopped right beside Victor as a tactical agent forced the syndicate boss down onto his knees, pulling his arms behind his back to snap heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

Maya leaned down, her face just inches from Victor’s ear.

"You told me Chad was a foolish boy who couldn't manage a cup of coffee without making a mess," Maya whispered, her voice like liquid ice. "You made the exact same mistake he did, Victor. You mistook my patience for weakness."

Victor Vance stared up at her, his eyes filled with a mixture of shock, fury, and absolute, crushing defeat as the tactical agents pulled him to his feet and dragged him out of the high-rise suite.

Marcus Vance stepped up beside Maya, trembling slightly as the emergency lights flickered back to bright white. He looked at her with an expression that bordered on reverence.

"You knew he was coming, didn't you?" Marcus asked in disbelief.

May you like

Maya adjusted the lapels of her dark suit jacket, tapping the digital touchscreen to restore her presentation maps to the wall.

"I didn't just know he was coming, Marcus," Maya said, her voice clear, calm, and completely unshakeable. "I laid the trap for him the moment I signed your security contract. Now, if everyone could please take their seats, we have a business to run."
