Chapter 6 - Shadows of the Relic

Z
Six months after the trial.
The Autumn crispness of October had settled over Columbus, turning the oak trees along the Maplewood neighborhood into vibrant shades of crimson and gold. Maya Miller stood in her fully restored living room, adjusting a framed abstract painting on the newly painted accent wall. The condo no longer held any trace of the past. The dark, heavy furniture Chad had favored was gone, replaced by minimalist, light-wood pieces, high-end Italian leather seating, and lush green house plants that caught the morning light.
Through her relentless work and the swift execution of the federal restitution order, Maya had not only reclaimed her stolen capital, but she had also officially purchased the neighboring commercial unit downstairs, expanding her logistics firm—Miller Global Logistics—into a full-service corporate consultancy employing six full-time logistics specialists.
Her life was smooth, ordered, and entirely under her command.
A soft knock at the front door interrupted her thoughts. Maya walked over to the smart security panel, checking the video display. Standing in the hallway was Detective Rodriguez, holding a thick manila envelope and a small, sealed evidence bag.
Maya opened the door with a warm smile. "Detective Rodriguez. Come in. Can I get you a coffee?"
"No thanks, Maya, I'm on shift," Rodriguez replied, stepping into the foyer and looking around with an appreciative nod. "Place looks great. A lot different than the last time I stood in this hallway."
"It feels different too," Maya said gently. "What brings you by?"
Rodriguez set the evidence bag on the glass console table near the entrance. Inside the clear plastic was a single, charred USB flash drive with a metallic housing that had been bent slightly at the connector edge.
"Federal Marshals completed the final liquidation sweep of the Apex Luxury Holdings storage lockers down in Cincinnati yesterday," Rodriguez explained, his tone becoming serious. "They cleared out the designer clothes, the safe deposit boxes, and the luxury vehicles. But tucked inside a false bottom of Chad's personal office desk, they found this."
Maya looked down at the burned drive. "What is it?"
"Our forensic tech team managed to pull about forty percent of the corrupted data off the flash drive before it shorted out," Rodriguez said, pulling a typed report from his envelope. "Chad wasn't just funneling your money into Apex to support Brenda's spending habits or buy luxury cars, Maya. Apex wasn't just a shell corporation for laundering your savings. It was an active node in an offshore corporate espionage ring targeting logistics and supply-chain databases across the Midwest."
Maya’s eyes snapped up to meet the detective’s. "Espionage? Chad was an insurance broker."
"Chad was the front man," Rodriguez corrected her. "He used your high-level admin clearance—the clearance codes he stole from your laptop while you were hospitalized with pneumonia—to access the proprietary shipping manifests of your largest corporate clients, including Vanguard Global Logistics. He was selling trade route data, pharmaceutical shipment schedules, and high-value cargo manifests to a third-party syndicate based out of Chicago."
Maya felt a sudden, familiar chill ripple across her skin. The sheer scale of Chad's betrayal seemed to have no floor. Every time she believed she had uncovered the full extent of his depravity, another dark layer peeled away.
"Does Vanguard know about this?" Maya asked, her voice steady despite the shock.
"Federal agents briefed Marcus Vance this morning," Rodriguez said. "And that's why I'm here to give you a heads-up. The leader of that Chicago syndicate—a man named Victor Vance, who ironically happens to be Marcus Vance's estranged older brother—was formally indicted by a federal grand jury two hours ago. Victor Vance realized his entire operation was exposed because of the digital audit your attorney, Stephanie O'Donnell, executed during your divorce trial."
Maya leaned against the entryway wall, processing the information rapidly. "So Victor Vance lost his entire illegal network because I stood up to Chad."
"Precisely," Rodriguez said gravely. "Victor Vance is currently out on a ten-million-dollar cash bond while his legal team fights his extradition. He’s a dangerous man with massive resources, Maya. FBI field agents intercepted a encrypted communication from Victor’s associates late last night. They mentioned your name, your home address, and the location of your corporate office."
Maya didn't panic. Five months ago, the threat of an unseen danger would have sent her into a tailspin of anxiety. But the fire that had scorched her face had also burned away her capacity for terror. She stood up straight, her jaw setting into a hard line.
"Are you telling me I need protective custody, Detective?" Maya asked directly.
"I'm telling you that the FBI wants to place a discreet security detail outside your building," Rodriguez said. "And I'm personally advising you to carry your personal protection everywhere you go until Victor Vance is behind bars."
"I don't need to run and hide in a safe house, Detective," Maya said, her voice dropping into a register of sheer, unyielding resolve. "I spent five years hiding in my own home while a monster lived in my bed. I am done being prey."
Rodriguez looked at her for a long moment, a slow look of immense respect creeping onto his weathered face. "Fair enough, Miss Miller. But take this seriously. Victor Vance doesn't play subtle games like your ex-husband did with coffee cups and stolen credit cards. He plays for keeps."
After Rodriguez left, Maya walked over to her desk, looking out over the city skyline. She pulled out her smartphone and dialed Stephanie O’Donnell’s direct line.
"Stephanie," Maya said as soon as her attorney picked up. "Detective Rodriguez just left. We have a new problem, and it involves Victor Vance."
"I just got off the phone with the U.S. Attorney, Maya," Stephanie said, her voice crisp and urgent. "Marcus Vance called me directly. He is terrified for your safety, but more importantly, he wants to offer you complete corporate backing. Vanguard Global Logistics wants to hire your firm to conduct a comprehensive security overhaul of their entire supply chain network to shut down any lingering vulnerabilities Victor might try to exploit."
"A security overhaul?" Maya asked. "That's a multi-million dollar contract."
"It is," Stephanie confirmed. "And it puts you directly in Victor Vance's crosshairs. If you take this contract, you're not just a victim who exposed his front man—you become the active architect destroying his empire."

Maya picked up the small silver coffee machine sitting on her kitchen counter—the machine she had purchased with her very first corporate paycheck, the one small item she had saved from her ruined past. She set it back down with a firm, decisive thud.
"Draft the contract, Stephanie," Maya said without a single second of hesitation. "Tell Marcus Vance I accept. If Victor Vance wants to come after my life or my business, he'd better bring more than empty threats. Because I'm going to take his entire network down piece by piece."
