Chapter 8

Chapter 8 - THE MEDIA STORM
The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with hundreds of reporters, flashing cameras, and political elite. Large banners reading VOTE VANCE FOR STATE SENATE hung from the balconies.Julian stood backstage, a heavy layer of makeup concealing the bruises on his face. Evelyn was frantically adjusting his tie.
"Are you sure the police handled Leo?" Evelyn whispered anxiously.
"Leo is detained for questioning. He has no proof," Julian hissed, adjusting his cuffs. "As for Clara, she’s a fugitive now. The moment I finish this speech, the police will pick her up and she’ll be in a padded cell by morning. We win."
The announcer’s voice boomed over the speakers: "Ladies and gentlemen, the next State Senator of Massachusetts, Julian Vance!"
The crowd erupted into applause as Julian stepped onto the stage, flashing his trademark million-dollar smile. He walked up to the podium, raising his hands to bask in the adulation.
"Thank you, thank you," Julian beamed into the microphone. "I stand before you tonight not just as a candidate, but as a man dedicated to truth, family values, and protecting the vulnerable in our great city—"
Suddenly, the massive projector screen behind him flickered. The campaign video stopped playing.
Instead, a crystal-clear audio recording echoed through the ballroom speakers.
“Your father was a fool, Clara. And you are a dependent... Who are you going to call? The police? I play golf with the commissioner. You have nothing. You are nothing without my name.”
The ballroom went dead silent. Julian froze, his face turning an ash-gray color.
The audio shifted to a video feed—hidden camera footage from Julian’s own study. It showed Julian and Evelyn passionately kissing, followed by Julian clearly stating, “The paperwork for the sanitarium is ready. Once she’s committed, the trust fund is ours.”
Murmurs erupted into a deafening roar of shock. Reporters gasped, cameras flashing furiously at the stage.
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open. Clara walked down the center aisle, dressed not in beige, but in a stunning, vibrant crimson dress. She held her head high, surrounded by federal agents and honest state police officers.
She walked right up to the stage, looking up at her trembling husband.

"The game is over, Julian," Clara’s voice rang clear across the microphones.
FBI agents stormed the stage. Before the cameras of every major news network in the state, handcuffs clicked tightly around Julian Vance’s wrists. Evelyn was seized in the wings, sobbing as her designer purse was confiscated. The golden cage had finally collapsed.
