Chapter 3

Chapter 3 - THE ULTIMATE BETRAYAL The coffee shop in downtown Boston was chic, noisy, and smelled of roasted beans and pretense. Clara sat at a corner table, a cappuccino cooling in front of her."Clara! Oh, thank God, you look wonderful!"
Evelyn breezed into the cafe, a vision in a tailored cream trench coat and oversized designer sunglasses. She slid into the seat opposite Clara, immediately reaching out to squeeze Clara’s hands. Evelyn’s wrist bore a delicate diamond tennis bracelet—one that hadn't been there last week.
"Hi, Evelyn," Clara said, keeping her voice light, though her skin crawled at the touch.
"Julian told me you’ve been having those... episodes again," Evelyn said, her voice dripping with artificial sympathy. She tilted her head, her perfectly manicured fingers stroking Clara’s hand. "The anxiety, the paranoia. Honey, you know we’re all so worried about you. Julian is doing everything he can to support you, but you need to rest."
Episodes. Clara wanted to scream. She wanted to lean across the table and wrap her fingers around Evelyn’s throat. Instead, she let her eyes well up with fake tears. She played the part Julian had written for her.
"I know," Clara whispered, squeezing Evelyn’s hands back. "I’ve just been feeling so confused lately, Evelyn. Sometimes I lose track of time. I don't know what’s wrong with me."
Evelyn’s eyes gleamed with a predatory satisfaction that lasted only a fraction of a second before she masked it. "Oh, sweetie. It’s okay. You just need to trust Julian. He knows what’s best for you. In fact, he mentioned a wonderful retreat up north. A place where you can totally unplug and heal."
A retreat. A prison.
"That sounds wonderful," Clara murmured. "Excuse me for a moment, I need to use the restroom."
Clara stood up, leaving her purse on the table but slipping her phone into her coat pocket. She walked toward the back of the cafe, but instead of entering the restroom, she looped around to the secondary exit that led to the alleyway.
She needed a lifeline, and she needed it now. Two days ago, while looking through old mail, she had found a business card slipped into a junk folder—a card for a private investigator named Leo Vance. He shared Julian’s last name, but a quick Google search had revealed he was Julian’s estranged, disgraced half-brother. Julian had ruined Leo’s career in law enforcement years ago to protect a wealthy client. If anyone hated Julian as much as she did, it was Leo.
Clara dialed the number on the card. It rang three times before a gruff, gravelly voice answered.
"Vance Investigative Services."
"Leo?" Clara whispered, looking over her shoulder. "My name is Clara. I’m Julian’s wife."
There was a long, heavy silence on the other end of the line. Clara could hear the sound of a match striking, then a deep exhale of smoke.
"You’re calling the wrong guy, Mrs. Vance. My brother and I don't exchange Christmas cards."
"I know," Clara said, her voice cracking with genuine desperation. "He’s stealing my money. He’s sleeping with my best friend. And he’s trying to commit me to a psychiatric asylum by the end of the month. I need help, Leo. Please. You’re the only one who knows how monstrous he really is."
Another pause. The gruffness in Leo’s voice softened just a fraction. "Where are you?"
"The café on 4th and Elm. I’m with his mistress right now."
"Go back inside. Play the victim. Meet me at the old pier diner at 9:00 PM tonight. Don't bring your car. Take a cab, and make sure you aren't followed. If Julian catches you talking to me, he’ll accelerate his timeline."
"Thank you," Clara breathed.
"Don't thank me yet," Leo said grimly. "You’re declaring war on a snake. Make sure you’re ready to get bitten."
Clara hung up, wiped a stray tear from her cheek, and walked back out into the café. She sat back down across from Evelyn, who was busy texting under the table, her face glowing from the screen.

"Sorry about that," Clara said with a fragile smile. "Just a bit of dizziness."
Evelyn smiled back, a beautiful, viperous expression. "Don't worry, Clara. Everything is going to be taken care of very, very soon."
