Chapter 16 - The Last Vault

The impact of the heavy glass decanter exploded across Victor Hale’s jaw in a shower of water and sharp crystal shards.
Victor let out a muffled roar of pain, stumbling backward against the glass wall, his pistol clattering onto the hard mahogany floor.
"Arthur! The gun!" I screamed.
Arthur Pendelton didn't hesitate. For a man in his late sixties, he moved with shocking speed, diving onto the carpet, grabbing the pistol, and scrambling back to his feet, pointing the weapon straight at Eleanor Cole’s chest.
"Don't move!" Arthur barked, his finger firm on the trigger, his arms steady.
Eleanor Cole froze, her face turning pale as ashes, her gloved hands slowly raising into the air.
Victor Hale slumped against the glass wall, blood streaming down his face from a deep gash over his eye, groaning as he clutched his broken jaw.
Beside the table, Daniel was down on his knees, coughing frantically, having managed to swallow the shredded remnants of the title authorization page. He looked up at me through tears of pain and exertion, a strange, wild look of relief shining in his eyes.
"I didn't... sign it..." Daniel choked out, wiping his mouth. "I didn't sign it, Laura..."
"I know, Daniel," I said softly, stepping over to him and helping him stand. "You did good."
Suddenly, a deafening mechanical screech reverberated through the steel shutters enclosing the room.
BZZZZZ-SHRRRRK!
Bright blue sparks showered into the darkness of the corridor as thermal cutting torches began slicing through the reinforced hydraulic lock pins from the outside.
Ten seconds later, the massive steel shutter crumpled inward, crashing onto the carpet with a thunderous metallic boom.
"FEDERAL AGENTS! ON THE GROUND! NOW!"
Agent Mercer, Agent Lin, and six heavily armed FBI SWAT operators burst through the smoke, laser sights painting red dots across the room.
Within three seconds, Victor Hale and Eleanor Cole were slammed onto the floor, their wrists bound in tight plastic zip-ties.
Agent Mercer stepped through the clearing smoke, holstering her weapon, her eyes sweeping over the room—the shattered crystal, the blood on the glass, Arthur holding the gun, and me standing over Daniel.
Mercer looked at me, a mixture of shock and sheer awe on her face.
"Laura," Mercer said, stepping forward. "Are you alright?"
"We're fine, Agent Mercer," I said, taking a deep, clean breath of air. "The evidence is secured. The primary suspect is in custody. And the blue folder is gone for good."
Mercer looked at Daniel, who was sitting on a chair receiving preliminary first aid from a tactical paramedic.
"Daniel Hayes," Mercer said, walking over to him. "Your cooperation today will be fully noted in your federal sentencing report."
Daniel looked up at Mercer, then looked at me.

"I don't care about the report," Daniel whispered, his voice hoarse and broken. "Just... tell Emily I tried."
"I'll tell her, Daniel," I said gently. "I'll tell her you did the right thing when it mattered most."
