Chapter 13 - The Shadow Docket

Z

By 2:00 PM, my peaceful living room looked like a military command post.

Two forensic technicians in rubber gloves were cataloging every hard drive, tablet, and USB flash drive in the house, while Agent Mercer sat at my dining room table going through six years of my personal tax files.

Arthur Pendelton sat beside me, his fountain pen resting on a pad of yellow legal paper. He had been arguing with Mercer for two straight hours.

"Agent Mercer," Arthur said, his voice brimming with aristocratic disdain. "My client was the primary government witness who dismantled the Marcus Thorne judicial bribery syndicate! She wore a wire for the FBI! The idea that she is secretly laundering fifty thousand dollars from a Bahamian shell account is not only legally preposterous—it is criminally absurd!"

Mercer didn't look up from her file. "Mr. Pendelton, your client’s former husband, Daniel Hayes, was released from FCI Terre Haute on temporary judicial furlough three days ago."

I stiffened in my chair. "What?"

Arthur leaned forward, his eyebrows pulling down sharply. "Daniel Hayes was furloughed? On what grounds?"

Mercer finally raised her eyes, looking directly at me. "On the grounds that he agreed to provide material testimony to the Special Counsel investigating offshore tax evasion in the Northern District of Illinois. Daniel Hayes claimed under oath that Laura Vance maintained a secondary safety deposit box in Toronto containing $600,000 in unregistered bearer bonds."

"Bearer bonds?" I gasped, letting out a harsh, incredulous laugh. "I have never been to Toronto in my life! I don't even have a Canadian travel visa!"

"We checked your passport records, Mrs. Vance," Mercer replied dryly. "You crossed the border at Niagara Falls on September 14th, 2024. Driving a rental car registered under your maiden name."

My mouth dropped open. "September 14th, 2024? I was in Northwestern Memorial Hospital having my gallbladder removed on September 14th, 2024!"

Mercer paused. Her hand hovered over the paper file. "Say that again."

"I was in surgery!" I stood up, grabbing my purse from the side table, pulling out my phone, and pulling up my electronic medical records portal. "Look at it! Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Inpatient Surgical Ward 4, September 12th through September 16th, 2024! I was hooked up to an IV tube!"

Mercer took my phone, scrolling through the verified hospital discharge summaries and digital surgeon logs stamped with official hospital cryptographic signatures.

Her stoic, skeptical expression began to fracture.

"If you were in a hospital bed in Chicago on September 14th," Mercer murmured, "then who used your state driver's license number to rent a Ford Explorer in Buffalo, New York, and cross the Peace Bridge into Canada?"

"Margaret," I whispered, the realization hitting me like a physical punch. "Margaret Hayes."

"Margaret was in state prison in September 2024," Arthur interjected, frowning.

"No, Arthur," I corrected, my mind racing through the timeline. "Margaret wasn't arrested until August 2026! In September 2024, Margaret was still running her notary business! She had access to my social security number, my birth certificate, and my old driver's license renewal forms!"

Agent Mercer picked up her secure satellite phone, dialing a four-digit extension.

"Mercer here," she said into the receiver. "Run a immediate biometric match on the Canadian border crossing photo from the Peace Bridge checkpoint, entry record 2024-09-14-BUFFALO. Cross-reference against state prisoner mugshots for Margaret Hayes and Claire Hayes-Miller."

We sat in tense, absolute silence for ninety seconds while the federal database processed the high-resolution facial recognition query.

The phone speaker crackled.

"Mercer," a technician's voice came through. "We got a 99.4% biometric match on the Canadian border entry photo."

"Who is it?" Mercer asked.

"It’s not Laura Vance," the technician reported. "It’s Claire Hayes-Miller. She was wearing a blonde wig and using a fraudulent state ID card under Laura Vance's name."

Mercer slowly hung up the phone. She looked at me, her rigid posture softening into a look of genuine, professional embarrassment.

"They used your identity three years ago to open the Toronto box," Mercer said quietly. "Claire opened the box in your name so that if the federal authorities ever tracked the bearer bonds, the paper trail would point directly to you."

"And Daniel's furlough?" Arthur demanded, slamming his fist onto the table. "Daniel lied to federal prosecutors to get himself released from prison!"

"Daniel didn't lie to get himself released," Mercer said, standing up and closing her binder. "Daniel lied because someone inside the federal prison facility threatened to kill him if he didn't sign that affidavit."

"Who threatened him?" I asked.

Mercer looked around my living room, ensuring her technicians were out of earshot, before leaning down toward Arthur and me.

"Marcus Thorne," Mercer whispered. "Thorne may be sitting in a federal penitentiary, but his political network inside the state corrections system is still fully operational. Thorne knew we were preparing a secondary indictment against his offshore holdings in Nevis. He orchestrated Daniel's fake confession to discredit you as a witness before the federal grand jury convenes next month."

"So Thorne is still running the game from his cell," I said, a cold, dangerous clarity washing over me.

"Thorne is trying to protect eighteen million dollars hidden in a network of Canadian trusts," Mercer admitted. "Fifty thousand of which was just transferred into your account to make you look like a co-conspirator."

"Agent Mercer," I said, taking a step toward her. "Where is Daniel now?"

"He was placed in a federal safehouse in downtown Chicago under US Marshal protection two nights ago," Mercer replied.

"He's not safe there," I said flatly. "If Thorne could manipulate the federal prosecutor's office into granting Daniel a furlough based on a forged border document, Thorne has people inside the Marshal's service."

Mercer stared at me, evaluating my words. "That's a heavy accusation, Mrs. Vance."

"Look at what happened to Richard Cole!" I shouted. "Cole was murdered in his own home while under police surveillance! Thorne doesn't leave loose ends! The moment Daniel finishes signing those grand jury depositions, Thorne’s people will dispose of him, and the blame will fall straight back onto me!"

Mercer pulled out her radio, hitting the secure channel.

"Mercer to Unit 4. I need an immediate status check on Safehouse Delta in the South Loop. Confirm visual on witness Daniel Hayes."

Static buzzed over the radio. Five seconds. Ten seconds.

May you like

Then a panicked voice broke through the speaker:

"Mercer! Unit 4 reporting! Primary door to Safehouse Delta is compromised! Both detail officers are down! The witness is gone!"
