Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Richard VanceZ

"You want me to ruin my business reputation, commit federal perjury, and deliberately leave a hospital contaminated... just so your illegal stock bet pays off?" I asked, looking at my father as if he were a complete stranger.
"It's not just a stock bet, Emily!" Richard Vance shouted, stepping closer, his corporate facade completely stripped away, revealing the desperate, cornered animal underneath. "If Apex stock doesn't drop by thirty percent when the market opens on Monday, Vance Capital will face a margin call of thirty million dollars! I used our family estate, your mother's trust fund, and money from syndicate investors who are not the kind of people you say 'no' to! If I can't cover that margin call, we lose everything! The house, the cars, our savings... and I go to federal prison for the rest of my life!"
My mother stumbled into the room, falling to her knees beside my father, grabbing my hand with frantic, trembling fingers.
"Emily, please!" she begged, tears streaming down her wrinkles. "You're a rich CEO now! You have forty employees! You made two hundred and fifty thousand dollars tonight! You can afford a minor hit to your company's reputation! Save your father! Save our family!"
I looked down at my mother, kneeling at my feet, begging the very daughter she had spent twenty-eight years degrading. The irony was so heavy it felt suffocating.
"No, Patricia," I said softly, pulling my hand out of her grip. "I will not commit a federal crime for a man who offered me fifty dollars to buy a mop while he was planning to commit biological terrorism for profit."
"You selfish, ungrateful brat!" my father roared, lunging forward as if to grab me by the throat.
Before he could lay a finger on me, Marcus Sterling stepped sharply between us, shoving my father back against the glass wall. "Touch her, Richard, and security will throw you out of this building in handcuffs before the FBI even gets here!"
Just then, Claire stepped into the doorway, her phone hanging limply in her hand. Her face was completely hollow, her eyes dead.
"Dad..." Claire whispered, her voice hollow. "My lawyer just spoke to the district prosecutor's office. The prosecutors received an anonymous tip three hours ago. They have emails from your private server showing you instructing me to ignore the air filtration alarms in Surgical Suites Four and Six."
Richard froze. All the blood drained from his face. "What?"
"You used me," Claire said, tears finally overflowing her eyes, spilling over her pale cheeks. "You told me it was just a minor administrative delay. You told me it would help me get promoted to Chief Surgical Resident! You set me up to take the fall for your short position!"
"Claire, baby, listen to me—" Richard tried to step toward her, but Claire violently pushed him away.
"Don't touch me!" Claire screamed, her voice echoing through the entire hospital floor. "I ruined my life for you! My medical license is going to be permanently revoked! I'm facing criminal negligence charges! And you did it for money?!"
The glass doors at the end of the hallway burst open.
Four officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, accompanied by representatives from the Securities and Exchange Commission, marched down the corridor with absolute authority.
The lead SEC agent held up a federal warrant. "Richard Vance? Claire Vance?"
My father stumbled backward, knocking over a stack of medical brochures. "No... no, wait! There's been a mistake!"
"Richard Vance, you are under arrest for federal insider trading, corporate sabotage, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud," the SEC agent declared loudly, snapping heavy steel handcuffs around my father's wrists.
"Claire Vance, you are being taken into custody for reckless endangerment, falsification of federal medical documents, and criminal negligence."
"Mom! Dad! Help me!" Claire sobbed as an officer cuffed her wrists behind her back.
My mother collapsed onto the polished tile floor, wailing hysterically as her husband and her favorite, prized daughter were led away in handcuffs down the long, bright hospital hallway.
I stood beside Marcus Sterling, watching the destruction of the family that had tried to crush my spirit for nearly three decades.
Grandma Eleanor walked slowly out of the elevator at the end of the hall, her wooden cane clicking softly against the floor. She walked up to me, draped her warm wool coat over my shoulders, and held my hand tightly.

"You did the right thing, my sweet Emily," Grandma Eleanor whispered, looking at the chaotic scene. "The truth always comes to light. No matter how deep they try to bury it."
I leaned my head against my grandmother's shoulder, taking a deep breath. The war at the hospital was over. But as the heiress to what remained of the family's assets, I was about to discover a massive secret my father had hidden in his vault—a secret that involved me, my grandmother, and the true origins of my corporation.
