Zero nine

Chapter 5 - The Shadow BoardZ

By two o'clock in the morning, the heavy scent of industrial hydrogen peroxide and chemical sanitizers filled the corridors of Saint Jude Medical Center. My team of forty technicians worked with flawless, robotic efficiency, transforming the bio-hazardous surgical suites into pristine, sterile environments that exceeded even federal standards.

Inspector Miller walked out of Surgical Suite 4, holding a digital sensor displaying a solid green reading of zero colony-forming units.

"Impeccable work as always, Ms. Vance," Inspector Miller said, marking her approval on her tablet. "Pristine Haven has officially cleared the surgical suites. They are safe for operations. However, the administrative investigation regarding hospital negligence remains open."

"Thank you, Inspector," I replied, signing the official decontamination clearance certificate. "My team's job here is done."

As Inspector Miller walked away to draft her final report, Marcus Sterling stepped up beside me, wiping sweat from his forehead. He handed me a signed corporate authorization document.

"The full two hundred and fifty thousand dollar wire transfer has been finalized," Marcus said quietly. "You saved this hospital from a complete public nightmare tonight, Emily. But... I owe you an explanation."

I narrowed my eyes, sensing the sudden shift in his voice. "An explanation for what, Marcus?"

Marcus gestured toward a quiet, private conference room down the hall. "Step inside for a moment. Away from your family."

I followed Marcus into the soundproof room. The glass walls offered a view of the empty hallway where my mother and father were currently sitting on a plastic bench, staring at the floor in stunned silence, while Claire paced frantically on her phone with a high-priced defense attorney.

Marcus locked the door and pulled down the blinds.

"Tonight wasn't an accident, Emily," Marcus said, his voice dropping to an anxious whisper. "The inspection wasn't a surprise. Someone inside the Apex Board of Directors leaked the internal filtration failure logs directly to the federal authorities."

I crossed my arms, my corporate instincts immediately kicking in. "Why would someone on your own board sabotage their own flagship hospital?"

"Because of your family," Marcus revealed, dropping a bombshell that made my blood run cold. "Specifically, because of your father's hedge fund, Vance Capital."

I blinked, genuinely stunned. "My father? What does his small-time investment firm have to do with Apex Health Systems?"

"Small-time?" Marcus let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Emily, your father hasn't been running a small-time firm for years. For the past three years, Richard Vance has been secretly accumulating short positions against Apex Health Systems stock. He was betting tens of millions of dollars of client money that Apex stock would crash!"

A cold knot formed in my stomach. "Dad shorted Apex stock?"

"Yes!" Marcus leaned in close. "And do you know how he planned to make that stock crash? By using Claire! He convinced Claire to deliberately ignore the safety maintenance warnings in the surgical suites. The plan was for an outbreak to occur, creating a massive public scandal. Apex stock would plummet, your father's short bet would make him fifty million dollars, and he planned to quietly pay off Claire's legal defense with the profits while framing the third-party cleaning staff!"

I stood frozen, absolute horror washing over me.

My father... my pious, judgmental father who sat at the dinner table tonight lecturing me about dignity, hard work, and moral superiority... had orchestrated a dangerous, illegal insider trading scheme that risked human lives and sacrificed his own daughter's medical career for pure financial greed.

"My God..." I whispered, clutching the edge of the conference table. "He sacrificed Claire. He was going to let her take the fall."

"Precisely," Marcus said grimly. "Dad gets rich, Claire takes a fall for 'negligence,' gets a slap on the wrist or a brief license suspension, and the family walks away with tens of millions. But your father didn't expect a rogue board member to call the feds early tonight before his short positions were fully set. And he certainly didn't expect you—the daughter he disowned and belittled—to be brought in by me to fix the bio-hazard before the stock market opens on Monday morning!"

By stepping in and successfully cleaning the hospital to federal standards, I hadn't just saved the hospital.

I had completely ruined my father's illegal fifty-million-dollar short bet.

When the stock market opened on Monday, Apex Health Systems stock wouldn't crash. It would soar due to our immaculate clearance report. And my father's hedge fund would be wiped out, facing total financial bankruptcy and federal prison time for insider trading and medical conspiracy.

I turned slowly to look through a tiny gap in the conference room blinds.

My father was sitting on the bench outside, looking at his watch, completely unaware that the daughter he handed a $50 bill to had just unintentionally destroyed his entire illegal empire.

Suddenly, the conference room door burst open.

My father stood in the doorway, his eyes wild, holding a thick leather folder. Behind him, my mother was sobbing hysterically into her hands.

"Emily!" my father hissed, closing the door behind him and locking it. "I know Marcus told you. I saw him talking to you! You have to listen to me right now!"

"Stay away from me, Dad," I said, stepping back, my voice shaking with pure disgust. "You're a monster."

"I did it for this family!" my father yelled, his face turning purple with rage. "I did it so we would never have to worry about money again! You have to help me, Emily! You have to go back to Inspector Miller and tell her your cleaning equipment failed! Tell her the surgical suites are still contaminated! If the hospital isn't shut down by morning, I am ruined!"

I looked at the man who raised me, realizing for the first time in my life that he wasn't just a judgmental parent. He was a ruthless, heartless criminal.

And my answer was already decided.
