Chapter 8 - Reckoning in the Shadows

The morning sun broke over Lake Erie, casting a golden hue over the tranquil waters, starkly contrasting the chaotic scene unfolding at the lake house shore.
Coast Guard cutters and state police patrol boats guided Clarissa’s motorboat safely back to the marina three miles down the coast. Dozens of officers, FBI agents, and medical personnel were waiting at the dock.
Dustin, wrapped in a thick wool survival blanket, was cradled in Clarissa’s arms as she stepped off the boat.
A female paramedic immediately rushed forward with a warm mug of cocoa for Dustin and examined Clarissa’s bruised arms. But Clarissa barely felt the cold or the pain. Her eyes were fixed on the flashing lights surrounding her property in the distance.
FBI Special Agent Sarah Vance—no relation to Parker—walked up to Clarissa, holding a secure digital tablet.
“Ms. Clarissa,” Agent Vance said, her tone deeply respectful. “I am happy to inform you that Deputy Miller is out of surgery and expected to make a full recovery. Victoria Sterling was instrumental in securing the scene until our units arrived.”
Clarissa let out a long, shuddering sigh of relief. “And Marcus? Parker?”
Agent Vance flipped a page on her tablet. “Marcus Kane was pulled from the lake by State Police two hours ago suffering from severe hypothermia. He is currently under heavy guard at the county hospital and facing charges of attempted murder, kidnapping, and parole violations. He won't be seeing the outside of a federal prison for the rest of his life.”
“And Parker?” Clarissa pressed, her voice hardening.
“Parker Vance was arrested attempting to flee the scene in his truck,” Agent Vance replied. “He broke his ankle in the crash near the main road. But more importantly, his arrest triggered a search warrant for his mother’s residence in Columbus.”
Clarissa sat down on a wooden bench, holding Dustin tightly. “What did you find?”
Agent Vance leaned in closer, her voice dropping. “Alana Vance and Ellie Vance were arrested at 5:00 AM by our federal task force. In Alana’s basement, we uncovered a sophisticated illegal financial operation—fraudulent land titles, forged identity documents, and proof of a multi-million-dollar tax evasion ring dating back over a decade. They weren't just stealing from you, Clarissa. They’ve been preying on wealthy, single working mothers across three states.”
Clarissa looked at Dustin, who was sipping his cocoa silently, his small face calm for the first time in weeks. The nightmare was finally ending.
“They tried to frame you for the financial discrepancies,” Agent Vance added. “Alana had forged your name on several offshore accounts to make it look like you were the mastermind if the federal government ever investigated. But the notebook your son kept—the ledger of 'debts'—proved to be the crucial piece of evidence.”
Clarissa looked down at her son in surprise. “Dustin’s notebook?”
“Yes,” Agent Vance smiled softly. “Alana wrote her personal banking PINs and shell company account references on the back cover of that school notebook, thinking a seven-year-old would never understand what they were. Dustin’s innocent tracking of his 'debts' gave our forensic accountants the exact roadmap they needed to unlock Alana’s hidden offshore accounts.”
Clarissa choked back a tear, pulling Dustin into a tight embrace. “You saved us, sweetie,” she whispered into his ear. “You saved us both.”

Dustin smiled weakly, burying his head in her shoulder. “Does this mean Grandma Alana won't ever come back?”
“Never again, baby,” Clarissa swore softly. “Never again.”
