Chapter 5 - The Rising Storm

By 2:00 AM, the lake house was illuminated by the flashing blue and red lights of three county sheriff cruisers.
Deputy Sheriff Miller sat at the dining room table, drinking a cup of black coffee while reviewing the documents Clarissa had provided. The audio recording Victoria provided was playing on a laptop in the center of the table, Parker’s angry, confessed threats echoing through the room.
“Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Clarissa,” Deputy Miller said, taking off his hat and rubbing his weary eyes. “Given the audio evidence and the forged land title document, we have more than enough to issue an immediate arrest warrant for Parker Vance for grand theft, forgery, and domestic assault.”
“How fast can you find him?” Clarissa asked. She was sitting next to Dustin, who had finally fallen asleep on the couch wrapped in a heavy fleece blanket.
“We’ve dispatched a unit to his mother’s house in Columbus,” Miller replied. “And another to his sister’s residence. But if he knows an arrest warrant is out, he might try to leave the state.”
Victoria, sitting across from the officer, leaned forward. “He won't leave the state without his mother. Parker is entirely dependent on Alana. She controls his offshore accounts—the ones he used to hide the money he stole from my company.”
Clarissa turned her head quickly to look at Victoria. “Offshore accounts? You didn't mention offshore accounts earlier.”
Victoria offered a cold, practical smile. “I didn't know the full extent until my lead investigator called me twenty minutes ago while the deputy was filling out his report. Alana Vance isn't just an overbearing mother-in-law, Clarissa. She’s the mastermind behind Parker’s entire financial operation.”
Clarissa felt a sudden, sickening realization wash over her.
All those times Alana had complained about her low pension, all those times Ellie had begged Clarissa for 'loans' to pay for Mason’s private school tuition—it was all a front. The entire family was a parasite network, feeding off Clarissa’s hard work while operating an illegal money-laundering scheme behind closed doors.
“So the lake house loan…” Clarissa whispered.
“Wasn't just to pay off gambling debts,” Victoria finished the thought. “It was liquidity to cover a massive deficit in an offshore shell company registered in the Cayman Islands under Alana’s name. They were using your house to save themselves from federal tax fraud.”
Deputy Miller stood up abruptly, pulling out his radio. “If there’s federal wire fraud involved, I need to contact the FBI regional office immediately.”
As Deputy Miller walked outside to make his call, Clarissa walked over to the large glass patio doors overlooking the dark lake. The reflection showed a woman who looked exhausted, but whose eyes held a dangerous, unwavering fire.
Her phone chimed on the table. It was an unknown number.
Clarissa picked it up and answered without hesitation. “Hello?”
“Clarissa…”
It wasn't Parker’s voice. It was Alana. But the whiny, helpless tone the old woman usually used was completely gone. In its place was a voice that sounded like grinding glass—cold, arrogant, and vicious.
“I see you’ve made a mess of things, my dear,” Alana said softly over the line.
“Where is your son, Alana?” Clarissa demanded, her hand tightening around the phone. “The police are issuing a warrant for his arrest right now.”
Alana chuckled—a slow, horrifying sound. “Parker is safe. You think a few local police officers scare me? Clarissa, you were always such a foolish girl. You thought because you had a nice little accounting degree that you were smart. But you never saw what was happening right under your nose.”
“You abused my son!” Clarissa yelled, her voice trembling with rage. “You humiliated him in my home!”
“That child is a bastard who doesn't carry a drop of Vance blood!” Alana hissed. “He didn't deserve to breathe the same air as my grandson Mason! And as for your home? Enjoy it while you can, Clarissa. Because by noon tomorrow, every asset you think you own will be frozen under federal investigation. You’ll be left penniless, sitting in that stupid lake house with nothing.”
“I have the forged documents, Alana,” Clarissa countered, forcing her voice to stay steady. “I have Victoria’s confession, and I have Parker’s recorded voice admitting to the crime.”
There was a brief silence on the other end, followed by Alana’s icy whisper: “You have paper, Clarissa. But I have the boy’s biological father.”
Clarissa’s heart stopped. The world around her seemed to spin out of control.
“What did you just say?” Clarissa whispered, her knees going weak.
“Did you really think Dustin’s real father just disappeared seven years ago into thin air?” Alana sneered. “Did you really think it was a coincidence that Parker met you in that quiet little coffee shop in downtown Columbus right after you filed for sole custody? Parker didn't find you, Clarissa. We hunted you.”
Clarissa’s mind raced back seven years. The toxic ex-boyfriend who had abandoned her the moment she got pregnant—Marcus Kane. Marcus had been a violent, dangerous man who had disappeared right before Dustin was born.
“Marcus is in prison,” Clarissa breathed out, struggling to find air.
“Marcus was released three months ago,” Alana replied with deep satisfaction. “And guess who paid his bail? Guess who has been funding his custody petition for the last six weeks? He’s on his way to the lake house right now, Clarissa. He’s coming to claim his son.”
The line went dead.

Clarissa dropped the phone. It shattered against the hard oak floor.
She turned around, her face pale as snow, looking toward the couch where Dustin lay fast asleep, completely unaware that the darkest ghost of his mother’s past was driving through the night toward them.
