Chapter 6 - The Monarch's Executioner

Z

By 1:00 PM, the street outside the Monarch Room was gridlocked with news vans, satellite trucks, and dozens of reporters trying to push past the private security guards posted at the entrance.

The story of Dominic Vale’s arrest had broken two hours earlier, sending shockwaves through Chicago's financial and political elite. The headlines were brutal: BILLIONAIRE DOMINIC VALE ARRESTED FOR EXTORTION AND STAGED ASSAULT. The narrative Graham Hale had built was taking hold—that Dominic was a paranoid, abusive tyrant who had staged an attack on his own wife to ruin a rival developer.

They thought I was hiding in fear. They thought I was a broken victim with a shaved head, cowering in some luxurious hotel room.

They were about to find out how wrong they were.

I stood in the holding room behind the Monarch Room’s main dining floor, wearing a sharp, tailored white suit that contrasted strikingly with my shaved head. I wore no jewelry except for one item: the massive, flawless diamond ring Dominic had given me on our wedding day. The ring I used to hide beneath my waitress apron.

"Two minutes, Mrs. Vale," Marcus whispered, standing beside me. He looked terrified, but behind his eyes was a growing sense of awe. "The State's Attorney is currently holding his own press conference across town, announcing formal charges against Dominic. If you release that audio, Graham Hale's lawyers will sue you for illegal wiretapping under Illinois two-party consent laws."

"Let them sue me," I said, stepping up to the full-length mirror and adjusting my collar. "In Illinois, illegal wiretap laws don't apply when the recording evidence reveals the commission of a violent felony or a conspiracy to commit one. My husband’s legal team will clear me in five minutes."

"And what about you?" Marcus asked softly. "You're stepping directly into the line of fire."

I looked at my reflection. The waitress who was afraid of her husband's power was gone. In her place stood the owner of the Monarch Room—and the wife of Dominic Vale.

"I am the fire," I said.

I walked out through the double doors into the grand dining room.

The flashbulbs were blinding. Dozens of cameras swung toward me, clicking frantically. Gasps echoed through the room as reporters took in my appearance—my exposed, perfectly shaved head, my fierce posture, and the undeniable aura of authority I radiated.

I walked directly to the podium that had been set up in front of Table 4—the very table where six men had held me down twelve hours ago.

I didn't wait for the noise to die down. I leaned into the microphone.

"My name is Elena Vale," I said, my voice calm, icy, and carrying over every speaker in the room. "Up until ten o'clock last night, I was known to the staff and patrons of this restaurant as Elena Hayes, a waitress."

The room went dead silent. Reporters held up their recording phones, starving for every word.

"Last night," I continued, holding my head high, "six men restrained me on this floor. They shaved my hair, filmed my humiliation, and laughed. Today, the State's Attorney’s office announced that my husband, Dominic Vale, staged this attack to frame the Hale family."

I paused, looking directly into the primary camera for WGN News.

"That is a lie," I stated clearly. "And I have the proof."

I reached into my suit jacket, pulled out a flash drive, and plugged it into the media sound deck connected to the room's central speaker system.

"What you are about to hear," I said, "is a recorded phone call between developer Graham Hale and his son, Preston Hale, placed thirty minutes before I was assaulted. It was recorded by the Monarch Room’s internal security system."

I pressed PLAY.

Graham Hale’s gravelly, arrogant voice blasted through the Monarch Room's speakers:

"...Listen to me, Preston. The waitress, Elena. She's Vale's wife... You need to make a scene. Touch her. Humiliate her... Cut her hair. Slap her. Do whatever it takes to break Vale's composure... A man like Dominic Vale doesn't think with his head when his woman is bleeding. Do it now."

The room exploded into utter chaos.

Reporters began shouting over each other, flashbulbs popping like fireworks.

"Mrs. Vale! Is that recording authentic?!"

"Did Graham Hale order the assault on you?!"

"Are you filing charges against the Hale family?!"

I raised my hand, and the sheer force of my presence brought the room back to a tense silence.

"Graham Hale attempted to use my body, my dignity, and my marriage as leverage in a corporate war," I said, leaning closer to the microphone. "He thought because I was wearing a waitress apron, I was weak. He thought because my husband loves me, that love could be used as a trap."

I held up the blue leather folder containing the deed to the restaurant.

"As of eight o'clock this morning, I am the sole owner of the Monarch Room," I announced. "And my first act as owner is to release this audio file, along with five years of financial ledgers detailing Graham Hale's illegal kickbacks to the State's Attorney's office, directly to the United States Department of Justice."

A collective gasp swept through the press corps.

"My husband is currently in custody because he chose to protect me," I concluded, my eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated steel. "By four o'clock today, he will be a free man. And by five o'clock... Graham Hale will be in a cell."

I turned on my heel and walked off the stage, leaving the press corps in absolute frenzy.

As I reached the back holding room, Marcus rushed toward me, his phone pressed to his ear, his face flushed with triumph.

"Elena!" he yelled over the noise. "The Federal District Attorney just saw the live broadcast! They've suspended the state warrant against Dominic! They're dispatching federal marshals to Graham Hale's estate right now!"

I stopped, taking a deep, long breath. The adrenaline rushing through my veins felt like liquid fire.

"Where is Dominic?" I asked.

"He's being processed for release at the central precinct," Marcus said, grinning. "The car is waiting outside."
