Chapter 10 - The Syndicate's Ledger

War with a stranger is fought with weapons; war with family is fought with secrets.

For forty-eight hours following Eleanor Vale's sudden arrival, Vale Enterprises was placed on maximum security lockdown. Marcus Vance and a team of forensic accountants worked round-the-clock inside the penthouse, tearing through fifteen years of microfilmed bank records, offshore wire transfers, and land registry documents.

While Dominic met with maritime union leaders to fortify his grip on the Port of Chicago, I took a different approach.

I didn't look at the money. I looked at the people.

Sienna and I sat in the private office of the Monarch Room, surrounded by whiteboards covered in red marker strings connecting names, companies, and political figures across Illinois and Europe.

"Okay, look at this," Sienna said, slapping a printout onto the desk. "Aegis Holdings isn't just Eleanor. It's a consortium of five major European shipping families. They’ve been trying to break into the American Midwest logistics market for a decade. But to operate legally in the US, an foreign entity needs a domestic partner with clean municipal standing."

"Graham Hale was supposed to be that partner," I realized, tracing a line from Hale Development to Aegis Holdings. "When I exposed Graham, Eleanor lost her domestic front."

"Exactly," Sienna agreed. "So she came here to force Dominic to become her new partner by holding the land under this restaurant over your head."

I stared at the whiteboard. Something was missing. Eleanor was brilliant, cold, and calculated. She wouldn't have flown into Chicago relying solely on an old, forgotten land lease debt from 2008. She was a predator who always kept a second knife hidden in her sleeve.

"Sienna," I asked suddenly, "who was the attorney who handled the original land lease sale for the city transit authority back in 2008?"

Sienna flipped through a thick binder of court archives. "Uh... a guy named Raymond Vance."

I froze. "Vance? Like Marcus Vance?"

"Let me check," Sienna muttered, her fingers typing rapidly on her laptop. She stopped, her eyes widening in shock. "El... Raymond Vance was Marcus Vance's father. He was the senior managing partner at Vance & Associates before Marcus took over the firm."

My blood ran cold.

Marcus Vance had been Dominic’s personal legal counsel for over twelve years. He was the man who handled Dominic’s private trusts, his corporate acquisitions, and the transfer of the Monarch Room deed to me.

If Marcus's father handled the 2008 land lease sale... then Marcus knew about the unbacked thirty-four million dollar liability all along.

"He didn't miss it," I whispered, a sickening realization washing over me. "Marcus didn't forget about the land lease liability when he drew up the deed transfer three weeks ago. He left it open on purpose."

Before Sienna could reply, the office door creaked open.

Marcus Vance stepped into the room.

He wasn't wearing his usual pristine three-piece suit. His tie was loosened, his jacket missing, and he held a thick, heavy manila envelope in his hand. His face was pale, shadowed with guilt.

Behind him stood two of Dominic’s security guards, looking confused.

"Mrs. Vale," Marcus said quietly, his voice raspy. "I think you should look at this before you call Dominic."

I stood up slowly, putting myself between Sienna and the lawyer. "Marcus. Did you know about Aegis Holdings?"

Marcus let out a long, shuddering sigh and closed the door behind him. He walked over to the desk and laid the heavy envelope down between us.

"My father didn't die of natural causes, Elena," Marcus confessed, his eyes bloodshot. "Fifteen years ago, when Eleanor poisoned Dominic's father, my father helped her cover it up. She paid him two million dollars in a Swiss account and promised to destroy our family if he ever spoke a word."

I stared at him, disgusted. "So you've been working for her? All these years... while sitting at Dominic's right hand?"

"No!" Marcus cried out, his voice cracking with desperate emotion. "I swear to God, no! I loved Dominic like a brother! I’ve protected him for twelve years! But three weeks ago... right after you took the deed to this place... Eleanor contacted me."

"What did she say?" I demanded coldly.

"She showed me the wire transfer receipts from my father's Swiss account," Marcus wept, wiping his face with a trembling hand. "She threatened to send them to the Federal District Attorney. My father’s legacy, my law license, my freedom... she was going to destroy everything. She forced me to leave the land lease clause uncorrected during the transfer."

I looked down at the manila envelope on the desk. "What is in here?"

"Everything," Marcus whispered. "The original bank records from 2011. The names of the judges Eleanor bribed in Zurich. And the real reason she needs the Port of Chicago."

I picked up the envelope, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Why does she need the port?"

"It isn't about shipping cargo, Elena," Marcus said, looking at me with pure terror. "It's about what's coming in on those ships. Aegis Holdings isn't just a logistics firm. It's a front for the largest untraceable corporate intelligence and asset-smuggling ring in Europe. If Eleanor gets control of the Chicago port, she won't just control the city's trade... she'll own every politician, executive, and union leader in the country."

I opened the envelope and pulled out a stack of encrypted bank receipts and shipping manifests bearing the silver seal of Aegis Holdings.

"Does Dominic know you're here?" I asked.

"No," Marcus replied, shaking his head. "If Dominic finds out I betrayed him, he’ll kill me with his bare hands. I brought this to you, Elena... because you're the only one who knows how to fight her without losing your humanity."

I looked at the documents, then at Marcus.

"You're going to do exactly what I tell you, Marcus," I said, my tone as sharp as a razor blade. "You are going to call Eleanor Vale. And you are going to tell her that I’m ready to negotiate."
