Chapter 6 - The Daughter's Revenge

Z

While Christopher was signing away his financial life in the legal deposition, Savannah was facing her own brutal reckoning in the real world.

The hotel bills were piling up rapidly. Derek had used the last of their immediate savings to pay for a tiny, run-down two-room apartment on the far edge of the industrial district. There were no granite countertops, no master suites, and no manicured gardens. The carpet was worn thin, and the window looked out over an auto body repair shop.

Savannah sat on an unfolded cardboard box in the middle of the tiny living room, staring at her chipped manicured nails. Her social media accounts, which she had spent years carefully curating to display a lifestyle of high-end luxury and suburban wealth, were now flooded with brutal comments.

The video of her being blocked by the police on Linda’s lawn had gone viral locally. Friends from her gym, former high school classmates, and acquaintances from her social circles were leaving ruthless comments under her old posts.

"Is this the house you said you owned?" one comment read.

"Imagine making your stepmother serve you breakfast when you don't even pay rent!" read another.

Derek walked into the room carrying two brown paper bags filled with cheap canned goods and basic groceries. He dropped them on the small kitchen counter with a loud sigh.

"I paid the first month's rent and the security deposit," Derek said quietly, rubbing his tired eyes. "That took every last dollar from my paycheck. We have forty dollars left to last us until next Friday."

Savannah jumped up from the box, her eyes blazing with irrational fury. "We can't live here, Derek! This place smells like old exhaust! I can't invite my friends here! My reputation is completely ruined!"

Derek turned around, his face hardening into an expression Savannah had never seen on him before. The gentle, compliant husband was completely gone.

"Your reputation?" Derek said, his voice deadly quiet. "You care about your reputation? Savannah, do you have any idea how embarrassed I am? I let you drag me into your father's lies. I acted like a complete arrogant idiot toward a woman who was hosting us for free!"

"She lied to us too!" Savannah yelled. "She should have told us the house was hers from day one!"

"She DID tell us!" Derek shouted back, his voice echoing off the thin walls of the apartment. "Your father lied to us! You refused to listen because you were too busy playing lady of the manor and handing her lists of domestic chores like she was your personal servant! You acted like a spoiled child, Savannah!"

"I am your wife!" Savannah shrieked. "You are supposed to defend me!"

"I defended you when I thought we were in the right!" Derek yelled, shaking his head in deep disgust. "But you weren't right. You were toxic, abusive, and entitled. And do you want to know the absolute worst part?"

Savannah went silent, glaring at him with pure rage.

Derek reached into his pocket, pulled out his wedding ring, and placed it slowly on the kitchen counter beside the grocery bags.

"The worst part is realizing that you knew deep down that something was wrong, but you enjoyed power-tripping over Linda way too much to care about the truth," Derek said softly. "I'm staying at my brother's place tonight. I need space, Savannah. A lot of it."

"Derek, wait! You can't leave me here alone!" Savannah panicked, rushing toward the door as he grabbed his jacket.

"I can, and I am," Derek said, his hand on the doorknob. "You need to grow up, get a real job, and figure out who you are when you aren't living off other people's money."

The door slammed shut, leaving Savannah standing in the middle of the empty, barren apartment, surrounded by unpacked cardboard boxes and the cold, unyielding silence of her new reality.
