Chapter 3 - War on Two Fronts

The silence that settled over the residence after Derek and Savannah’s dramatic midnight departure was not peaceful; it was heavy with toxic tension. Savannah had left behind a trail of destruction: two pulled closet doors, ruined wallpaper in the guest hallway where they had dragged their heavy iron trunks, and an unpaid mountain of gourmet grocery orders she had charged to the house account before Linda cut off the primary credit card.
It was 7:00 AM on a crisp Thursday morning. Christopher sat at the kitchen island, staring blankly into a mug of black coffee. There were no cooked egg whites, no fresh strawberries, and no whole-wheat toast waiting for him. The kitchen was silent, save for the hum of the refrigerator.
Linda walked in dressed in a tailored navy blue blazer and crisp trousers, holding her briefcase. She looked radiant, refreshed, and entirely unbothered by the storm brewing around her.
"Where are you going?" Christopher asked, his voice raspy from lack of sleep. His eyes were bloodshot, his silk robe stained and disheveled.
"I have a 9:00 AM meeting with Lisa Salazar," Linda said smoothly, double-checking her files. "And then I am spending the rest of the afternoon looking at private storage units."
Christopher slammed his coffee mug onto the granite counter, splashing dark liquid over the white surface. "Storage units? For what? What are you planning now, Linda?"
Linda took a paper towel, wiped up the spilled coffee without a word of anger, dropped it in the trash, and looked at him. "To store your personal items, Christopher. Once the formal divorce papers are served to you this afternoon."
Christopher gasped, dropping his spoon against the ceramic tile floor with a loud clang. "Divorce? You are divorcing me over a misunderstanding with my daughter? Over a stupid family disagreement?!"
"It was never a misunderstanding, Christopher," Linda said, her voice drop-dead steady. "A misunderstanding is forgetting to buy milk. You lied to your entire extended family for eighteen years, claiming my deceased parents' legacy was your personal estate. You invited squatters into my home, forced me into domestic servitude in my own house, and tried to strip away my professional home studio. You didn't just break my trust; you actively tried to erase my identity."
"I made a mistake!" Christopher shouted, standing up, his chair scraping violently against the floor. "I wanted my daughter to respect me! Is that such a crime? I didn't want her to know that I moved into my wife's rich parents' house with nothing to my name! I had pride, Linda! A man needs pride!"
"Pride that relies on another person's subjugation is not pride, Christopher. It's fraud."
Before Christopher could respond, his cell phone rang loudly on the counter. The caller ID flashed with the name of his elder sister, Evelyn—a notorious busybody who lived in a grand gated community three states over and who had spent years looking down her nose at Linda during family holidays.
Christopher answered on speaker, hoping perhaps to find an ally to shame Linda into submission. "Evelyn?"
"Christopher! What on earth is going on over there?!" Evelyn’s shrieking voice echoed clearly through the kitchen speaker. "Savannah just called me hysterical from a hotel lobby! She says Linda kicked them out onto the street in the dead of night like dogs! She says Linda is threatening to throw you out too! Have you lost control of your wife?!"
Christopher swallowed hard, his face turning bright red as he glanced at Linda, who simply stood with her hands resting lightly on her briefcase, watching him with an amused smirk.
"Evelyn, look, it's complicated..." Christopher stuttered, his bravado evaporating instantly.
"Complicated?" Evelyn sneered over the phone line. "It's not complicated at all! That house belonged to our family’s legacy! You told us all at Thanksgiving five years ago that you bought out Linda’s share of the trust! Savannah has every right to be in her father's ancestral home! You need to put that cold-hearted woman in her place immediately, or I am taking the next flight out there to deal with her myself!"
Linda stepped forward, leaned down toward the phone, and spoke clearly into the microphone. "Hello, Evelyn. This is Linda, the sole legal owner of this property. If you set foot on my driveway, I will have you arrested for criminal trespassing within five minutes. And just so you are fully informed, your brother never paid a single penny toward this house. He has been living here rent-free on my generosity for nearly two decades. Have a wonderful day."
Linda tapped the red button on the screen, ending the call instantly.
Christopher stared at her in utter shock. "Did you... did you just hang up on my sister?"
"I did," Linda said, picking up her briefcase and opening the garage entry door. "And by the time I return this evening at 5:00 PM, I expect you to have made arrangements for your own temporary living accommodations. Lisa Salazar's office will be sending over the full separation terms by noon."
"You can't just kick me out!" Christopher yelled after her, following her into the garage. "I have legal marital rights to this residence!"
Linda stopped right beside her sedan, unlocked the door, and looked at him with an icy expression that made Christopher freeze in his tracks.

"Check your signed prenuptial agreement, section nine, clause B, Christopher. In the event of marital infidelity, fraud, or deliberate attempt to convert separate non-marital real estate, you waived all temporary occupancy rights upon service of legal notice. You signed it in front of a notary. And Lisa Salazar never forgets a clause."
She got into her car, closed the door, started the engine, and triggered the garage door opener. Christopher was left standing alone in the cold morning exhaust, watching the garage door slowly rise to reveal the bright, unforgiving light of day.
