Chapter 9 - The Bloodline’s Price

The room smelled of heavy burn salve and ozone.
Claire lay on the high-tech hospital bed, surrounded by a maze of monitors, IV drips, and clear plastic tubing. Her face was almost entirely covered in thick white bandages, leaving only her bloodshot blue eyes and dry, cracked lips exposed.
I walked to the side of the bed, stopping just outside her reach. Detective Vance stood quietly by the door, his hand resting on his belt.
When Claire saw me, her chest rose and fell rapidly, the monitor beeping at an accelerated pace.
"David..." her voice was a raspy, painful whisper, stripped of all its former warmth and elegance. "You... came."
"I came to tell you it’s over," I said calmly. "Miller confessed. The police found the offshore records in your safe deposit box in Delaware. The trust has been frozen by federal authorities until Ari turns eighteen."
A horrible, wheezing sound came from Claire’s throat. It took me a moment to realize she was laughing.
"You... poor... fool," she rasped, her unbandaged hand twitching against the bedsheets. "You still... think you know... the whole story."
"I know enough," I said. "You killed Sarah. You tried to ruin my life. You tried to take my daughter."
"Sarah... used you," Claire hissed, her eyes wide and bloodshot, fixed on mine with terrifying intensity. "Ask... Vance... about the medical report... from the night Ari was born..."
I frowned, glancing back at Detective Vance. Vance’s expression hardened, but he didn't say anything.
"What is she talking about?" I asked Vance.
"David..." Claire’s voice cracked, a horrifying tear slipping from her eye onto the white gauze covering her cheek. "Ari... isn't your daughter."
The hospital room seemed to tilt on its axis.
"Shut up," I breathed, stepping closer to the bed. "Shut your mouth!"
"Check... the blood work..." Claire rasped, a sickening, triumphant grin twisting her visible lips. "Sarah... was already three weeks pregnant... when she met you in Boston... You were just... the cover story, David... The domestic shield... to make her look like an innocent suburban mother..."
"That’s a lie!" I shouted, my hands shaking uncontrollably. "You're lying!"
"Ask... the detective," Claire whispered, her monitor spiking wildly. "Ask him... whose blood... matches Ari’s..."
I spun around to face Detective Vance. He looked down at the manila folder in his hands, refusing to meet my eyes.
"Vance?" my voice broke completely. "Vance, tell me she's lying. Tell me right now!"
Vance sighed heavily, opening the folder. "David... during the routine paternity confirmation for the trust transfer investigation... federal lab tests were conducted on Ari’s DNA."

He looked up at me with eyes full of deep, agonizing pity.
"You aren't a genetic match, David. The biological father... was Marcus Miller."
