Chapter 6 - The Bloodline

"Drop the lighter, Claire!" Detective Miller ordered, his voice echoing off the wooden rafters. "Hands where I can see them! Now!"
Claire didn't panic. She looked at the detective, then at me, and a slow, cruel smile crept across her lips.
"Detective Miller," she said casually, letting the lighter snap shut. She tossed it onto a cardboard box. "Always playing the hero. Just like you did for Sarah."
"Keep your mouth shut and get on your knees," Miller commanded, stepping into the attic with his weapon raised.
I looked between Miller and Claire, a strange, sickening knot tightening in my gut. How had Miller gotten inside my house? I hadn't called him. My mother couldn't have called him that quickly.
"How did you get in here, Marcus?" I asked, my voice dropping an octave.
Miller didn't turn to look at me. "Your mother called me from her car, David. She was terrified. I was already patrolling nearby."
"Patrolling?" Claire scoffed, letting out a bitterly dark laugh. "Tell him the truth, Marcus. Tell him why you're really here."
"Shut up, Claire!" Miller snapped, his weapon trembling slightly.
"He doesn't know, does he?" Claire stepped forward, ignoring the gun pointed at her chest. "He doesn't know that you were the man on the tape, Marcus! He doesn't know that you were the one who altered Sarah's medical chart!"
The air was sucked clean out of my lungs.
I turned around slowly to face Detective Miller.
The man who had attended Sarah’s funeral. The man who had sat on my porch and cried with me. The man who had brought Ari her first tricycle.
"Marcus?" I whispered, my voice barely audible. "Is that... is that true?"
Miller’s face paled, the blood draining from his features under the harsh overhead bulb. He didn't deny it. He couldn't.
"David... you don't understand," Miller said, his hands shaking as he lowered the gun slightly, pointing it now midway between me and Claire. "Sarah promised me half of the offshore account. We were partners! She was going to leave you, David! She was using you as a cover story to hide from her father's creditors!"
"You're lying," I snarled, stepping toward him. "Sarah loved me!"
"She lied to you every single day!" Claire interjected, her voice dripping with venom. "Sarah wasn't a victim, David! She was the mastermind! She faked her entire background, met you, got pregnant to lock down her new identity, and planned to stage her own death to escape federal prosecution!"
"She was going to double-cross both of us!" Miller yelled, his eyes wild. "She was going to take the baby and the money and fly to Switzerland the week after delivery! Claire found out, came to the hospital, and forced my hand! We had to end it before Sarah ruined everything!"
I stood between two monsters in my own home, the dust of my late wife’s secrets settling on my skin like ash.

"And now," Miller murmured, his eyes locking onto mine with a cold, desperate glint, "there are too many people who know the truth."
He raised the pistol directly at my chest.
