Chapter 7

"Get to the nursery!" Luke barked, pushing Grandpa and me toward the back hallway as glass shattered on the lower floor of the villa. "There’s a reinforced safe room behind the linen closet in Brucie's room! Go!"
"What about you?!" I screamed as the sound of heavy boots echoed up the marble staircase.
"I'm finishing this!" Luke shouted back. He racked the slide of his handgun, his ocean-blue eye flashing with a terrifying, absolute resolve. "Grandpa, lock the steel door behind you! Don't open it for anyone except me!"
Grandpa grabbed my arm with surprising force, pulling me down the corridor just as the first burst of automatic gunfire echoed through the west wing.
We sprinted into the nursery. Brucie was crying hysterically in her crib, terrified by the screaming sirens and the thunderous gunfire echoing through the stone walls. I snatched her up into my arms, pressing her face against my neck to muffle the sound, my tears falling freely onto her dark curls.
Grandpa shoved open the hidden panel inside the linen closet, revealing a heavy steel door equipped with an electronic keypad. He quickly punched in the six-digit code Luke had given him months ago. The heavy door clicked open, revealing a small, windowless room stocked with emergency medical supplies, water, and security monitors.
"In! Get in!" Grandpa urged, pushing me inside.
I stepped into the cold steel room, holding Brucie tightly against my chest. Grandpa reached for the door handle to pull it shut, but suddenly he froze.
Through the small monitor mounted on the safe room wall—which broadcasted live feeds from the villa's security cameras—I saw the study.
The room was destroyed. Glass was shattered across the floor, and the rain was pouring in from the broken terrace doors. Luke was pinned against the wall, his gun knocked to the floor, blood streaming from a deep cut above his left temple.
Standing over him was Richard Sterling, holding a heavy silenced pistol pressed directly against Luke's forehead.
"No!" I shrieked, pressing my hands against the monitor screen. "No, Luke!"
Through the camera's microphone, Richard's voice came through the safe room's speakers, cold and completely detached.
"You really thought a dead-man's switch would protect you, Luke?" Richard sneered, wiping a smudge of blood from his cheek. "I bought off your private server host in Switzerland two weeks ago. The Macau ledgers were deleted three hours ago. You have nothing left to threaten me with."
Luke looked up at his uncle through his bleeding eyes, a bloody, defiant smile breaking across his lips. "It doesn't matter, Richard. You'll never find them. The safe room is subterranean. You'll be caught by the Colombian authorities before you ever find the entrance."
"I don't need to search the house, nephew," Richard said calmly. He pulled a small black remote from his pocket. "I brought thermite charges. In five minutes, this entire estate will be reduced to ash. The court will assume you, your half-sister, and the child perished in a tragic accidental fire."
My blood ran cold. He wasn't trying to capture Brucie anymore. He was going to burn us all alive to erase the Sterling scandal from the face of the earth forever.
Grandpa looked at the monitor, then looked at me and the crying baby in my arms. A silent, terrifying transformation passed over his weathered face. The weary, broken old man who had spent three months whittling wood on the patio vanished, replaced by the fierce father who had raised me after my parents died.
"Grandpa, what are you doing?" I whimpered as he stepped back out into the nursery.
"Stay here, Clover," Grandpa said softly, his voice remarkably gentle despite the chaos around us. He reached out and stroked Brucie’s soft cheek one last time. "Lock the door from the inside."
"Grandpa, no! Don't leave us!" I begged, grabbing his sleeve. "He has armed men!"
"I promised your mother on her deathbed that I would protect you from the Sterlings," Grandpa said, his eyes tearing up as he smiled down at me. "I failed to keep you away from David's son. But I will be damned if I let David's brother hurt my girls."
Before I could stop him, Grandpa slammed the heavy steel door from the outside. The electronic lock engaged with a loud THUD, sealing me and Brucie inside the dark, reinforced room.
"Grandpa!" I screamed, beating my fists against the cold steel door. "GRANDPA!"
I scrambled back to the security monitor.
On the screen, Grandpa walked out of the nursery into the hallway, holding his iron tire iron. He didn't run. He walked with a steady, relentless stride toward the west wing.
In the study, Richard was raising his gun to shoot Luke in the head.
Suddenly, Grandpa burst through the ruined door frame. With a roar of pure, terrifying rage, the seventy-two-year-old mechanic swung the heavy iron bar with all his strength, smashing it directly into Richard's shoulder and sending the pistol flying across the marble floor.
The camera feed flickered wildly as the armed guards rushed into the room. Muzzle flashes illuminated the screen in blinding white bursts. I saw Luke scramble across the floor, tackling one of the guards and grabbing the fallen gun. I saw Grandpa fighting like a madman, taking down another man before a bullet struck him in the chest.
"NO!" I screamed into the empty steel room, burying my face in Brucie's blanket as the security monitors suddenly went pitch black.
The sound of explosions rocked the villa. The steel floor beneath my feet trembled violently as the heat from the thermite charges began to bleed through the mountain estate above us. Smoke began to seep through the ventilation grates.
I sat in the darkness, cradling my mismatched-eyed daughter against my chest, waiting in the suffocating heat for the fire to consume us, or for the steel door to open.
Ten minutes passed. Then twenty. The air grew hot and thin.
Then, through the heavy steel door, came the sound of a metallic keypad dragging.
Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.
The heavy latch clicked. The steel door slowly creaked open.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the roaring orange flames of the burning villa behind him, was a figure covered in soot, blood, and ash. He was holding a bleeding wound in his side, his breath coming in ragged, painful gasps.

He looked at me through the thick smoke—his left eye a piercing ocean blue, his right eye a deep, dark brown.
"Clover..." Luke whispered, extending a trembling, blood-stained hand toward us. "It's over. Come home."
