Zero nine

Chapter 3

The air on the porch went completely still. The rustle of the pine trees seemed to vanish, swallowed whole by the sheer absurdity and terror of Luke’s words.

"Take her away?" I breathed, my hands flying to my mouth. "She’s a newborn! She just spent two weeks fighting for her life in the NICU! Nobody is taking my baby!"

"They aren't coming to adopt her, Clover," Luke said, his voice dropping into an urgent, low pitch as he stepped closer to the bottom of the porch stairs. "They are coming with federal marshals and a court injunction for mandatory blood testing and temporary legal wardship. In the corporate world, if an estate worth three billion dollars is tied to an infant whose mother is an unverified party, the board places the child in neutral custody until the inheritance dispute is resolved."

"Over my dead body," Grandpa growled, his knuckles white around the baby blanket. "I buried my daughter, and I raised Clover. No slick suit from Seattle is stepping foot on this land to touch this child."

"You don't understand the power these people have!" Luke shouted, frustration cracking his aristocratic composure. "My uncle sits on the board of directors. He’s been waiting for an excuse to wrest control of Sterling Timber away from me since my father died. When I suddenly disappeared from Seattle nine months ago, he hired private investigators. They tracked me here. They tracked my credit cards, my apartment lease, and my visits to the clinic with Clover!"

I felt the blood drain entirely from my head. "They tracked you to me?"

"They know everything, Clover," Luke said, his eyes wild with desperation. "They know you’re David’s illegitimate daughter. And more importantly, they know that I am the father of your baby. They are going to spin this into the ultimate scandal. They’re going to claim that you and I conspired to create an heir to consolidate total ownership of the trust!"

"That's insane!" I screamed, tears spilling hot over my cheeks. "I didn't even know who David Sterling was until ten minutes ago! I thought my dad was a mechanic who died in a car crash!"

"It doesn't matter what the truth is to the media or the probate court," Luke insisted, taking another step up the wooden stairs. "If they prove in court that Brucie is the product of an incestuous union between two primary beneficiaries, the state laws in Washington will void our rights to the trust entirely. The entire three billion dollars will default directly to my uncle."

"Let them have the money!" I cried out, stepping between Luke and my grandfather. "Take the damn money! I don't want a single cent of your family's blood money! I just want my daughter!"

"It's not that simple, Clover," Luke whispered, his voice trembling with a terrifying certainty. "My uncle doesn't just want the trust. To guarantee that Brucie can never file a legal claim when she turns eighteen, his lawyers are planning to file criminal charges against both of us. They want you in prison for fraud, and they want me ruined. And while we’re tied up in federal litigation, Brucie will be made a ward of the state in Washington."

My vision blurred, dark spots dancing at the edges of my sight. The agonizing pain from my emergency C-section, still raw and healing beneath my clothes, flared up with a sharp, burning intensity. I swayed on my feet, grabbing the wooden porch pillar to keep from collapsing.

"Clover!" Luke lunged forward instinctively, reaching out his arms to catch me.

"Don't touch her!" Grandpa barked, shoving Luke back with his free arm with surprising strength for an old man. "You brought this plague to our doorstep, Sterling! You brought your corrupted, filthy family drama into my girl's life!"

"I'm trying to save her!" Luke yelled back, his composure completely disintegrating. "Do you think I wanted this?! Do you think I want to wake up every single day knowing that the woman I fell in love with—the only woman I ever truly loved—is my father's daughter?! I am living in a personal hell every breathing second, Mr. Vance! But right now, the black Suburbans are already on Highway 17. They will be here before sunset!"

The silence returned, heavier and colder than before. The sun was beginning to dip below the tree line, casting long, bloody red shadows across the gravel driveway.

"What are you proposing?" I managed to ask through my dry, aching throat.

Luke looked at me, his ocean-blue eye filled with unbearable sorrow, his dark brown eye cold with determination.

"We leave. Right now," Luke said. "I have a private air transport waiting at a private strip in Georgetown. I have cash, offshore accounts my father set up that the board can't freeze, and a place in South America where the probate court can't reach us."

"You want us to run away with you?" Grandpa said, laughing bitterly without an ounce of humor. "You want my granddaughter to become a fugitive with the man who ruined her life?"

"I want her to keep her baby!" Luke snapped. "If you stay here, they will take Brucie within the hour. The local sheriff's department already received the federal escort order. They are coming, Mr. Vance!"

As if on cue, the faint, ominous sound of a siren echoed from the direction of the main highway, cutting through the quiet country air.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped beast. I turned to look at my grandfather. His weathered face had aged ten years in a matter of minutes. Tears were standing in his deep wrinkles, reflecting the red hue of the setting sun. He looked down at little Brucie, who had just opened her tiny eyes—one brilliant ocean blue, one dark, ink-black brown—blinking innocently up at the terrifying world around her.

"Grandpa..." I choked out, absolute terror gripping my chest. "What do we do?"

Grandpa looked from the baby's face to the end of the gravel driveway, where the dust clouds of approaching vehicles were beginning to rise over the pine trees. Slowly, he looked up at Luke, his jaw clenched so tight the muscles twitched under his skin.

"If you ever step out of line," Grandpa whispered to Luke, his voice deadly quiet, "I will kill you myself. Do you understand me?"

May you like

"I understand," Luke said without hesitation.

"Clover, get the baby's bag," Grandpa ordered, his voice breaking as he stepped toward Luke's SUV. "We're leaving."
