Zero nine

Chapter 5 - Whispers and Allies

The private recovery room at the women’s clinic across town was quiet, smelling faintly of lavender and disinfectant. Michael had managed to get me discharged against medical advice from the hospital, using his connections to transfer me and baby Leo to a high-end private medical facility owned by one of his corporate clients. Here, away from Victoria Vance’s process servers and the watchful, judging eyes of hospital staff, I could finally breathe.

But breathing offered no relief. Every breath felt like inhaling powdered glass.

My four daughters—Lily, Grace, Chloe, and Ava—were currently locked away in Aaron’s newly rented luxury townhouse on the south side of the city. Diana had called me three times in the last two hours, weeping, telling me that Aaron had blocked her number and blocked all contact between the girls and my side of the family.

I sat on the edge of the examination bed, nursing Leo. My hands were still shaking, but the raw, unhinged hysteria from earlier had subsided, replaced by a cold, calculating resolve.

The door opened, and Michael walked in, accompanied by a tall woman in her late nineties sharp tailor-made grey suit. She had silver-streaked hair styled in an elegant bob, piercing green eyes, and an aura of absolute, terrifying authority.

"Elena," Michael said quietly, stepping aside. "This is Eleanor Vance-Cross. Senior partner at Cross & Associates."

I blinked in surprise. "Vance-Cross?"

"Yes," the woman spoke, her voice like smooth velvet over steel. "Aaron and Victoria’s aunt. Their late father’s eldest sister."

I stared at her in utter shock. "You're... Aaron's aunt? The one who ran the corporate litigation firm in Chicago?"

"The very same," Eleanor said, pulling up a sleek leather armchair and sitting down across from me. She set a thick leather briefcase on her lap and looked at me with sharp, evaluating eyes. "And I am here because my nephew and niece have committed an act of sheer, unadulterated madness that threatens to ruin this family's reputation permanently."

"You... you don't believe Aaron?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Eleanor let out a sharp, aristocratic scoff. "Believe him? Aaron is a weak-minded fool who has allowed his career failures and fragile ego to drive him into a paranoid delusion. Victoria, on the other hand, is a ruthless opportunist using my nephew's mental collapse to secure her own standing at her firm by manufacturing a high-profile, dramatic custody battle."

Eleanor leaned forward, resting her hands on her silver-topped cane. "I have known Aaron since he was born. He has always had a timid, insecure streak. When he failed to make partner three weeks ago, he broke. Instead of facing his wife like a man, he looked for a scapegoat. And he found one in a birthmark and a loyal friend."

I felt a massive sob catch in my throat. Hearing someone from Aaron's own family validate my sanity was like receiving oxygen after drowning.

"Thank you," I choked out, tears overflowing once more. "Thank you, Eleanor."

"Don't thank me yet, child," Eleanor said sternly, though her eyes softened slightly. "We have a war to fight. Victoria has already filed emergency custody petitions alleging that you are an unfit mother suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and that the home environment was compromised by infidelity. She used Aaron’s police connections to push that emergency order through a friendly family court judge this morning."

"How could a judge grant that without hearing my side?!" I demanded, anger flaring in my chest.

"Because Victoria presented a sworn affidavit from Aaron claiming he witnessed intimate behavior between you and Michael, combined with the pending paternity dispute," Eleanor explained calmly. "In the eyes of a conservative family court judge at seven in the morning, placing the children temporarily with the father seemed like the 'safe' measure until a hearing could be convened."

"When is the hearing?" Michael asked, stepping forward, his hands shoved deep into his trousers pockets.

"In four days," Eleanor replied, tapping her cane against the floor. "Which gives us ninety-six hours to completely dismantle Victoria’s case, prove paternity beyond a shadow of a doubt, and expose Aaron’s mental instability to the court."

"The DNA test is happening today," I said quickly. "The technician from the lab is supposed to swab Leo at two o'clock."

"Good," Eleanor said. "We want that test executed as quickly as possible. But DNA results take three to five business days for expedited processing. We cannot wait for the lab report to start pulling the rug out from under Victoria."

Eleanor opened her leather briefcase and pulled out a stack of documents, spreading them across the small table.

"First," Eleanor began, pointing a manicured nail at a financial ledger, "Aaron’s claim that he was working late sixty hours a week to 'provide for the family' is a complete fabrication."

I frowned, looking closer at the numbers. "What do you mean? He was at the office every night until ten o'clock!"

"He wasn't at the office, Elena," Michael revealed quietly, looking at me with deep pity. "I checked the firm’s keycard access logs this morning after I left the hospital. Aaron checked out of the building every day at five-thirty PM."

My breath hitched. "Where... where was he going?"

"He was at the Grand Royale Hotel downtown," Eleanor said coldly, sliding a folder of credit card statements toward me. "He has been renting a private suite there three nights a week for the last four months. He spent over twenty-six thousand dollars of your joint savings account."

I stared at the paper, my mind reeling, the numbers swimming before my eyes. Twenty-six thousand dollars? Our joint savings? The money we had set aside for Lily’s braces, for Chloe’s college fund, for the new baby’s nursery?

"Was he... was he seeing someone else?" I whispered, a horrifying realization dawning on me. Was Aaron projecting his own infidelity onto me?

"We are currently investigating who was registered in that hotel suite with him," Eleanor said smoothly. "My private investigator is pulling the hotel security footage as we speak. If Aaron was engaging in an extra-marital affair while accusing you of one, Victoria’s moral crusade in court will shatter into a thousand pieces."

I sank back against the pillows, my head spinning violently. The man I had shared a bed with for eleven years was a complete stranger. He hadn't just doubted my loyalty; he had systematically embezzled our family's savings, lied about his job, hid his professional failures, and was potentially sleeping with another woman—all while building a psychotic conspiracy theory about me and his best friend to cover his own tracks.

"That bastard," Michael muttered under his breath, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the back of Eleanor's chair. "That absolute bastard."

"Save your anger for the courtroom, Michael," Eleanor advised coolly. "Right now, we need to focus on defense. Victoria will try to paint you as the villainous home-wrecker. She will subpoena your phone records, your bank accounts, and your personal life. Are you prepared for that level of scrutiny?"

Michael looked directly at Eleanor, his face hard as flint. "I have nothing to hide. Subpoena whatever they want. I’ll hand over my phone, my laptop, my blood, my DNA—whatever it takes to clear Elena’s name and get those girls back."

"Good," Eleanor said, nodding approvingly. "Because Victoria is ruthless, but she is arrogant. She thinks she's fighting a defenceless, heartbroken housewife. She has no idea that I have taken this case pro bono."

Eleanor stood up, buttoning her suit jacket. She turned to me, her green eyes locked onto mine with fierce determination.

"Elena, you are going to rest today. You are going to let the technician swab your baby. And then you are going to put on the most expensive dress you own, fix your hair, and prepare yourself. Because when we step into that courtroom on Monday morning, we are not just going to defend your reputation. We are going to strip Aaron Vance of everything he owns."

After Eleanor left the room to coordinate with her investigative team, Michael stood by the window, looking out at the rain slicking the city streets below.

"Elena?" he asked softly, without turning around.

"Yes?"

"I'm sorry," he whispered, his voice choked with emotion. "If I had paid closer attention... if I had noticed how unhinged Aaron was getting at the office... maybe I could have stopped this before it reached you."

"No, Michael," I said firmly, holding Leo tightly against my chest. "You were being a friend. You were helping a woman who could barely walk through her pregnancy. Aaron made his choices. He chose to lie, he chose to steal, and he chose to abandon his son."

I looked down at little Leo, who had drifted off to sleep, his tiny mouth slightly open.

"He called this birthmark a curse," I murmured, lightly stroking the soft skin of my baby's cheek. "But he's wrong. It’s not a curse. It’s the catalyst that finally exposed the monster I was married to."

At precisely 2:00 PM, the door opened, and a court-appointed lab technician walked in carrying a sealed DNA sampling kit. The battle lines were officially drawn. The truth was about to be put into a test tube. And no amount of lies from Aaron or Victoria would be able to change what science was about to reveal.
