Zero nine

Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Z

Morning broke over the city in a dismal haze of grey clouds and relentless rain. The sunlight barely managed to penetrate the thick glass of my hospital room, casting long, somber shadows across the floor. I hadn't slept a single second. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw Aaron’s twisted, contemptuous face as he walked out the door, or I heard the memory of Diana telling me that my daughters were crying as their father packed his life into two suitcases.

The baby, whom I had tentatively begun calling Leo in the quiet dark of the night, slept peacefully in the plastic bassinet beside my bed. He had nursed twice, entirely blissfully unaware of the war zone he had been born into.

At 8:00 AM, the wooden door to my room swung open.

I flinched, expecting Aaron to walk through—perhaps sobered by the morning light, full of remorse, begging for my forgiveness.

Instead, a tall, sharply dressed woman stepped into the room. She wore an impeccably tailored navy-blue pantsuit, her blonde hair pulled back into a slick, unforgiving bun. She carried a sleek leather briefcase in one hand and a thick manila folder in the other. Her demeanor radiated cold, clinical professionalism.

"Elena Vance?" she asked, her voice clipped and devoid of warmth.

"Yes," I answered weakly, sitting up higher against the pillows. "Who are you?"

"My name is Victoria Vance," she declared, stepping closer to the bed. "I am Aaron’s elder sister, and his retained legal counsel as of six o'clock this morning."

A cold spike of dread drove straight through my heart. Victoria. Aaron’s estranged, hyper-competitive older sister who was a cutthroat family law attorney in the city. She had always disliked me, viewing me as an underachieving woman who had 'trapped' her brilliant brother into a life of suburban domesticity with four children.

"Victoria..." I breathed, my heart hammering wildly against my ribs. "What are you doing here?"

"I am here to serve you with formal legal notification, Elena," Victoria replied coldly, opening her briefcase and pulling out a stack of legal documents stamped with official court seals. She set them directly onto the rolling tray table over my bed.

I stared at the papers in absolute horror. The bold black text at the top of the first page burned into my retinas:

PETITION FOR DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE AND TEMPORARY EMERGENCY CUSTODY ORDERS.

"Dissolution...?" I choked out, a fresh wave of tears blinding my vision. "He filed for divorce? It hasn't even been twenty-four hours! I just had his child yesterday!"

"A child whose paternity is severely in question," Victoria countered sharply, her dark eyes flashing with cold disgust. "Aaron has briefed me fully on the situation. The timeline of your sudden 'bed rest,' Michael’s unprecedented access to your residence, and the distinct physical anomaly present on the infant. We have already filed a motion for an court-ordered, expedited DNA paternity test."

"He's his father!" I screamed, my voice echoing off the sterile walls. "Aaron is Leo's father! I have never cheated on him! Not once! Not ever! How dare you come into my hospital room and hand me these papers while I am recovering from childbirth!"

"Save the dramatic hysterics for the judge, Elena," Victoria said smoothly, not flinching an inch. "We are moving swiftly to protect my brother's assets and his emotional well-being. Furthermore, as part of the emergency orders filed this morning, Aaron is seeking temporary full legal and physical custody of Lily, Grace, Chloe, and Ava."

"WHAT?!" I shrieked, attempting to throw off the blankets and stand up. Pain exploded across my lower abdomen, sharp and blinding, forcing me back down onto the bed with a gasp of agony. "He wants to take my daughters away from me?!"

"He wants to protect his daughters from an unstable environment," Victoria corrected calmly, adjusting her designer eyeglasses. "An environment where their mother was conducting a clandestine, extra-marital affair with their father's best friend right under their noses. The court will look very unfavorably upon your conduct, Elena."

"There was no affair!" I sobbed, clutching my stomach as deep, violent tremors shook my entire frame. "Michael was helping us because Aaron was never home! Aaron was working late every night! Ask Michael! Ask anyone!"

"We will certainly be speaking to Michael," Victoria said with a grim, predatory smile. "In fact, my process server is delivering his subpoena as we speak. If Michael was involved in the fraudulent concealment of a child's paternity, we will be seeking civil damages for intentional infliction of emotional distress."

"You are monsters," I rasped, glaring at her through a veil of bitter tears. "Both of you. Aaron knows the truth in his heart. He is just scared, or bitter, or sick! And you... you have always hated me. You’re enjoying this!"

Victoria’s posture stiffened slightly, her icy smile disappearing. "I am protecting my family, Elena. Something you clearly failed to do. The DNA test swab will be administered by a court-certified technician here at the hospital at two o'clock this afternoon. Do not attempt to leave or discharge yourself before then, or you will be in violation of a court mandate."

She snapped her briefcase shut with a sharp clack.

"Good luck, Elena. You're going to need it."

Without another word, Victoria turned on her high heels and marched out of the room, leaving the heavy wooden door open behind her.

I sat alone in the quiet room, staring at the stack of legal papers lying on my tray table. The black ink looked like poison spread across the crisp white paper. Petition for Dissolution of Marriage. Emergency Motion for Restraining Order. Ex-Parte Custody Request.

My life, built over more than a decade of hard work, compromise, love, and devotion, had been completely liquidated in a single morning.

Before I could even process the horror of Victoria's visit, my phone began to ring frantically. I picked it up with a claw-like grip. It was my sister, Diana.

"Elena!" Diana was sobbing hysterically. "Elena, they’re here! Oh my God, they’re here!"

"Diana, what’s happening?!" I panicked, pressing the phone tight against my ear.

"Aaron showed up with two police officers and a woman from Child Protective Services!" Diana cried out, her voice barely coherent over the sound of screaming in the background. I could hear seven-year-old Grace and ten-year-old Lily screaming for me, their little voices high-pitched and hysterical. "They have a court order, Elena! They’re taking the girls! Aaron is putting them in his car right now!"

"NO!" I shrieked, throwing the blankets off my legs entirely, ignoring the agonizing, tearing pain in my abdomen. "No! Put the police officer on the phone! Put Aaron on the phone!"

"He won't talk to me!" Diana wept. "The officer said there’s an emergency temporary injunction signed by a judge this morning based on allegations of emotional instability and an unsafe domestic environment! Lily is kicking and screaming, Elena! She's crying for you! They're pulling Ava out of her high chair!"

"Tell Aaron I will kill him!" I screamed, blind rage and maternal fury overwhelming every sense of physical pain. "Tell him if he touches my girls, I will kill him with my bare hands! Diana, stop them!"

"I can't stop them! The police said they’ll arrest me if I interfere!" Diana yelled through her tears. "They're gone, Elena... they just pulled out of the driveway... oh God, the girls were crying so hard..."

The phone went silent as Diana collapsed into weeping on the other end.

I dropped the phone. A guttural, primal scream tore out of my throat—a sound of pure, unadulterated devastation that echoed through the entire maternity wing. Nurses rushed into the room, horrified, but I didn't care.

My daughters had been stolen from me. My husband was waging total, merciless war against me. My baby boy was being labeled a bastard.

I ripped the IV needle directly out of the back of my hand, blood spurting onto the white hospital bed sheets.

"Ma'am! Ma'am, stop! What are you doing?!" Rachel the nurse shouted, rushing forward to grab my bleeding arm.

"Get out of my way!" I spat, tears washing the bloodstains on my face. "Get out of my way or I swear to God I will tear this building down!"

I stood up on trembling, bleeding legs, clutching the side of the bed to keep from fainting. I looked down at my baby boy in the bassinet, who was now crying loudly, startled by the chaotic noise.

I reached down, scooped little Leo into my arms, pressing his tiny, warm body against my bleeding chest.

"They're not taking you," I whispered to him, my voice turning into a cold, terrifying promise. "They took your sisters, but they will never, EVER take you."

At that exact moment, Michael burst back into the room, his tie completely undone, his eyes wildly desperate. He saw the blood on the sheets, the papers on the tray table, and the raw, dangerous insanity in my eyes.

"They took the girls," I told Michael, my voice dropping into a chillingly quiet tone.

Michael looked at the court documents on the table, reading Victoria’s name at the bottom. A dark, terrifying realization washed over his face.

"They took them," I repeated, looking Michael straight in the eye. "Aaron and Victoria took my daughters. They think they've won."

Michael took a deep, terrifying breath, his jaw locking tight. "What do you want to do, Elena?"

"I want my daughters back," I said, my tears finally drying into cold, crystalline hatred. "And I want to burn Aaron Vance's entire world to the ground."
