Chapter 5 - The Midnight Confession

The sudden flash of lightning cast long, grotesque shadows against the wet hangar floor. The rain roared with renewed ferocity against the metal roof, sounding like a continuous burst of heavy machine-gun fire. Inside the yellow tape perimeter, nobody moved. The Guardia Civil officers instinctively shifted their grip on their rifles, sensing the sudden escalation of violence hanging in the cold air.

Victor Cross took half a step toward Laura, his right hand subtly drifting beneath his leather jacket toward the concealed Glock holstered at his kidney.

"Don't do it, Cross," Andrew warned, stepping sideways to place his own broad frame between Cross and Laura. "There are Spanish state police officers five feet away. You draw iron in this hangar, and you leave in a body bag."

Sterling raised a single, trembling hand, halting his security chief. His face had turned the color of wet ash. The arrogant, untouchable corporate titan was gone, replaced by a desperate, cornered animal.

"Inspector Alvarez," Sterling said, his voice strained, pitching with barely controlled panic. "Major Vance is in possession of classified United States military intellectual property stolen from an active defense program. Arrest her immediately. Under the Espionage Act, she cannot be allowed to leave this facility with that drive."

Alvarez looked at the small, glowing thumb drive in Laura’s hand, then at the frantic airline executive. Her eyes narrowed with sharp, professional skepticism. "Director Sterling, five minutes ago you assured me that this aircraft suffered a simple civil maintenance anomaly. Now you are invoking the United States Espionage Act over a commercial flight log?"

"She sabotaged the aircraft!" Sterling snapped, losing his temper completely. He pointed an accusatory finger at Laura, his voice echoing shrilly through the vast hangar. "She’s insane! She has blamed me for her own failures ever since my son died in that cockpit! She boarded this flight with the sole intention of staging an emergency to extort my corporation!"

"Is that why Ridley is in intensive care with paralyzed lungs, Richard?" Laura took a step toward him, her voice ringing out clear, steady, and devastating. "Did I sneak into the first-class galley and lace his thermos with suxamethonium? Did I log into the aircraft’s satellite transponder from Seat 1B at 02:14 GMT and transmit the remote execution script to the primary flight computer?"

"You can't prove that!" Sterling hissed, his eyes bulging.

"I don't have to," Laura said calmly, pointing the thumb drive directly at his chest. "The Icarus program had a unique cryptographic watermark—a digital signature David created himself. He named it Valkyrie-7, after my callsign. When your remote override seized control of our rudder over the ocean tonight, it broadcast that exact same watermark. You didn't just steal the defense software to fix your corporate stock price, Richard... you used my dead wingman’s own code to try and kill three hundred innocent people."

"He was my son!" Sterling suddenly roared, the explosive shout shattering what little dignity he had left.

The hangar fell completely silent. Even the diplomat in the trench coat took an involuntary step back, shocked by the sudden, raw breakdown of the billionaire executive.

"He was my son!" Sterling repeated, tears of uncontrolled rage welling in his eyes, his voice cracking with venom. "I built an empire for him! I built the most advanced autonomous defense architecture the world had ever seen! And you... you arrogant, reckless little soldier, you let him burn in that desert! You were the flight lead! You were supposed to protect him!"

"David knew the system was flawed, Richard," Laura said softly, the sorrow in her eyes cutting deeper than any blade. "He begged you to shut down the Icarus trials three weeks before he died. He came to my quarters in Aviano with the telemetry sheets. He was going to resign his commission to stop you. You knew that. That’s why you pushed the live-fire test early—because you knew if the Pentagon found out your software had fatal control loops, Sterling Aerospace would go bankrupt."

"He didn't know what he was talking about!" Sterling screamed, stepping past Andrew, completely heedless of the police officers who were now unholstering their weapons. "He was weak! He listened to you instead of his own blood! If that plane had crashed tonight, the world would have finally understood the danger of human error! They would have mandated the fully autonomous Icarus flight control suite across every airline in the Western hemisphere! A multi-trillion-dollar monopoly... it would have been David’s monument!"

Andrew stared at Sterling in utter revulsion. "You sick bastard. You would kill three hundred people just to validate your company's stock?"

"I would burn this entire world down to make David’s name immortal!" Sterling snarled.

"That’s enough," Inspector Alvarez said, her voice dropping into cold, authoritative steel. She switched from English to rapid-fire Spanish, barking commands at her officers.

Instantly, four Guardia Civil officers stepped forward, raising their weapons directly at Victor Cross and the private contractors. "Drop your hands! On the ground! ¡Al suelo! ¡Ahora!"

Cross hesitated for a fraction of a second, his tactical calculations failing as red laser dots from the Spanish officers' carbines painted his chest. He slowly raised his hands and knelt onto the wet concrete.

Sterling looked around in wild disbelief as two officers grabbed his arms, forcing his wrists behind his back. The heavy click of steel handcuffs echoed loudly in the cold air.

"You can't arrest me!" Sterling spat, struggling violently against the officers. "I have diplomatic immunity! I have friends in the Senate! Vance, you hear me? You're a dead woman! I’ll buy every judge in Madrid! You will never leave Spain alive!"

Laura didn't reply. She stood motionless, watching as the officers dragged Richard Sterling toward the hangar exit, his desperate screams swallowed by the torrential downpour outside.
