Chapter 13 - Thunder Over the North Sea

Z

The freezing, stormy night over the North Sea was pitch-black, illuminated only by the intermittent green flickers of the cockpit displays inside Laura Vance’s F-35A. Flying at 45,000 feet through heavy cloud decks, Laura and Captain Sarah Chen cut through the turbulent European sky at Mach 1.6, their afterburners casting faint blue cones of fire into the icy slipstream.

"Valkyrie Lead to Strike-2, do you have the target on APG-81 radar?" Laura asked over the secure encrypted frequency.

"Strike-2 has target contact," Chen responded immediately from two miles in trail. "Bearing zero-eight-zero, fifty miles off the coast of Norway, cruising at Angels 41. It’s the Gulfstream G650, squawking a civilian diplomatic transponder code. But their electronic emissions are off the charts, Laura—they’re broadcasting high-gain microwave pulses directly into the civilian air traffic corridor!"

"They’ve already locked out the primary routing computers over Frankfurt and Amsterdam," Laura said, monitoring the emergency tactical datalink feed. "Twelve commercial airliners have already declared emergency control lockouts. We have less than eight minutes before those airframes enter unrecoverable dive profiles."

"Are we authorized for kinetic engagement?" Chen asked, the tension in her voice palpable.

"Negative," Laura replied firmly. "That Gulfstream is registered under a sovereign diplomatic flag. If we shoot it down over international waters without physical proof of their cyber-payload, it triggers a catastrophic geopolitical crisis. We use the Valkyrie-Purge electronic warfare pod. We get within five hundred feet, establish a directional optical link, and fry their transmitter array with a high-power microwave burst."

"Five hundred feet at Mach 1.2 in a blind storm?" Chen gasped. "Laura, that’s insane! The wake turbulence alone could flip you into the sea!"

"I’ve flown closer," Laura said cold and steady. "Form on my wing and cover my six. If they deploy active electronic countermeasures or defensive chaff, jam their guidance systems."

Laura pushed the throttle past the detent into full military power. The F-35 surged forward, cutting through the dense storm clouds like a silver spear.

Within two minutes, the dark silhouette of the twin-engine corporate jet emerged through the driving sleet. The Gulfstream was sleek, painted in matte black, with large, non-standard satellite domes bulging along the top of its fuselage. As Laura closed the distance, the warning sensors in her helmet began screaming: WARNING! ACTIVE RADAR ILLUMINATION!

"Lead, break right!" Chen shouted. "They’re not just a broadcast platform—they have active automated counter-fire systems!"

From the rear fuselage of the Gulfstream, a pod opened, deploying a high-intensity directed-energy pulse directly at Laura’s aircraft.

The cockpit displays in Laura’s F-35 flickered violently. Her heads-up display dissolved into static as the electromagnetic interference slammed into her forward sensor suite. The aircraft pitched sharply to the left as the secondary fly-by-wire channel fought the incoming pulse.

"They’re using the Icarus protocol against us!" Laura grunted, fighting the heavy control stick with both hands. "They’re trying to seize my flight controls via the forward radar receiver!"

"I’m engaging their pod with an electronic attack!" Chen called out, banking her fighter hard to the left and unleashing a blinding cone of digital jamming from her electronic warfare array.

The interference on Laura’s screens cleared for a split second.

Laura didn't hesitate. She dove her fighter underneath the Gulfstream’s turbulent slipstream, feeling the violent violent shudder of the jet’s wake rattling her airframe. Rising directly beneath the corporate jet’s belly, barely three hundred feet below its fuselage, Laura flipped the red arming switch on her central console.

"Target locked," Laura whispered. "Executing Valkyrie-Purge... now!"

A continuous, invisible pulse of ultra-high-frequency microwave energy beamed upward from the specialized pod mounted beneath Laura’s F-35, burning directly into the Gulfstream’s central satellite transceiver.

Through the darkness, Laura saw the white satellite dome on the Gulfstream’s spine burst into blue electrical fire. Sparks and smoke trailed from the corporate jet’s avionics bay as its communication arrays fried from the inside out.

Instantly, the emergency alerts across Laura’s tactical display turned from flashing red to solid, serene green.

"Amsterdam ATC reports primary flight computers are back online!" Chen cheered over the radio. "The remote override is broken! All twelve commercial flights have regained manual control!"

The blackened Gulfstream banked sharply toward the Norwegian coast, its rogue transmitters completely dead, signaling an immediate emergency landing under the tracking guns of NATO interceptors.

Laura pulled back on the stick, climbing gracefully into the clear, moonlit sky above the storm clouds. The endless canopy of stars stretched out before her, cold, peaceful, and untouched by human malice.

"Edwards Control, this is Valkyrie-01," Laura spoke, her voice filled with quiet, unbreakable triumph. "The sky is clear. Mission accomplished."
