Chapter 7 - The Trap at Perry County

Z
The rain had cleared by dawn, leaving behind a thick, low-hanging fog that blanketed the tarmac of the Perry County Regional Airport. The small, rural airfield was silent, save for the low hum of a twin-engine Gulfstream jet parked near an isolated hangar at the edge of the runway.
Inside the dimly lit hangar, Daniel Caldwell was tied to a metal chair, his face battered, his hands bound tightly behind his back with plastic zip-ties.
Standing in front of him, sipping black coffee from a paper cup, was Evelyn Vance. She wore an immaculate camel-hair coat, her dark hair pinned back flawlessly, looking as if she were waiting for a first-class flight rather than directing a criminal enterprise.
"You really were a massive disappointment, Daniel," Evelyn said smoothly, tossing her empty cup into a nearby trash bin. "I gave you seven years. Seven years to secure a simple legal signature from an unsophisticated girl. And you managed to lose everything because you couldn't keep your pants zipped around Vanessa Price."
"Evelyn... please," Daniel croaked, his lip bleeding, his voice cracked with desperate terror. "I did what you asked! I kept Emma quiet! I set up the accounts! It was Vanessa... she’s the one who talked to the girl!"
"Vanessa was stupid," Evelyn said, pulling a sleek, silenced pistol from her coat pocket and checking the chamber with practiced ease. "But you were careless. And carelessness in our line of work is fatal."
"She’s your daughter!" Daniel spat, tears streaming down his bruised cheeks. "Emma is carrying your grandson! How can you do this?"
Evelyn walked up to him, placing the cold steel barrel of the pistol against Daniel’s forehead. "Emma was a mistake my husband made. She inherited his weakness. She thinks the world operates on rules, fairness, and love. She has no idea how power actually works."
"She knows enough," a voice called out from the darkness near the hangar entrance.
Evelyn froze. She turned slowly, her eyes narrowing as the silhouette of a woman stepped out of the heavy fog into the dim yellow light of the hangar.
It was Emma.
She wore a heavy dark coat over her hospital gown, her face pale, her stance unyielding. Standing right beside her was Rachel Monroe, holding a dark leather briefcase.
Daniel’s eyes went wide with shock. "Emma? What... what are you doing here? Get out of here! She’s crazy!"
Evelyn stared at her daughter, a slow, cold smile spreading across her lips. "Well, well. Look who decided to play the hero. Did you come to save your cheating husband, Emma? Or did you come to give your mother a hug?"
"I didn't come for him," Emma said, her voice echoing through the steel structure. "And I certainly didn't come for you."
Evelyn raised the gun, pointing it straight at Emma’s heart. "You shouldn't have come here, Emma. Sterling offered you twenty million dollars. I know because I have taps on his encrypted lines. You could have walked away rich. Now, you’re just going to die in a wet hangar in the middle of nowhere."
"I didn't come alone, Mother," Emma said quietly.
From the fog outside the open hangar doors, six black armored SUVs roared onto the tarmac, their high-beam headlights blinding the interior of the building. Heavy sirens began to wail, echoing across the open runway.
"FBI! Drop your weapon! Hands where we can see them!" red laser sights danced across Evelyn’s chest and shoulders as dozens of tactical agents poured out of the vehicles, weapons raised.
Evelyn didn't drop the gun. Her eyes darted frantically around the hangar, realizing the perimeter was entirely surrounded. Her private pilot was already on his knees on the tarmac outside, hands behind his head.
"You brought the feds?" Evelyn hissed, her polished facade finally cracking into pure, unadulterated venom. "You think they can protect you, Emma? Sterling owns half the prosecutors in this state!"
"They aren't state prosecutors," Rachel Monroe called out, holding up her phone, which was connected to a live speaker. "We didn't go to local law enforcement, Evelyn. Two hours ago, Emma transferred the entire twelve-million-dollar Oregon timber trust directly to the United States Department of the Interior as a public land gift. The land is now federal property."
Evelyn’s face turned gray. "You... you gave it away?"
"The land belongs to the nation now," Emma said, stepping forward, unbothered by the gun still pointed at her. "Which means any attempt to seize, alter, or launder money through that property is an act of federal treason and fraud against the United States Government. The FBI Special Task Force isn't here to investigate a local divorce, Evelyn. They're here to seize every asset connected to Sterling Financial."
"No..." Evelyn whispered, her hand trembling. "No! My money... my accounts..."
"It's gone," Emma said, her voice dripping with absolute authority. "Everything you built. Everything you stole. It’s over."
Evelyn’s eyes flashed with psychotic rage. "If I go down, you go down with me!"
She squeezed the trigger.
CLICK.
The firing pin came down on an empty chamber.
Evelyn blinked in horror, looking down at the pistol.
"Did you really think I wouldn't check the manifest of your private jet?" Rachel Monroe said with a cold smile, holding up a small brass firing pin between her fingers. "Your pilot was very cooperative once the FBI offered him witness protection thirty minutes ago."
"Drop the weapon now!" an FBI tactical officer screamed, rushing forward and tackling Evelyn Vance to the concrete floor.
The gun clattered away across the concrete. Evelyn screeched like a wounded animal as metal handcuffs clicked tight around her wrists, her elegant coat covered in dust and grease.
Daniel sagged against his chair, sobbing hysterically with relief. "Emma... oh God, Emma, thank you! Thank you! You saved me! I’m sorry... I’m so sorry for everything!"
Emma walked over to Daniel. She looked down at the man she had loved for seven years, the man who had shared her bed, lied to her face, and plotted her downfall for money.
She reached down, picked up his discarded navy suit jacket from a nearby crate, and dropped it into his lap.
"I didn't save you, Daniel," Emma said, her voice ice-cold. "The federal agents are arresting you too. For corporate conspiracy, perjury, and child endangerment."
Daniel’s desperate smile vanished, replaced by an expression of absolute horror. "Emma... please! I’m the father of your baby!"
May you like
"My baby will never know your name," Emma said softly.
She turned her back on him, walking out of the hangar into the crisp morning air as federal agents swarmed the building, taking both Daniel Caldwell and Evelyn Vance into federal custody.
