Chapter 4 - Twisted Alliances

The rain turned into a torrential downpour by midnight. Inside the old Victorian house, the air felt thick with tension. Rachel had arranged for a private security firm to station an armed guard outside the driveway, but Emma couldn't sleep. She sat in the nursery she had painted herself—a soft lavender room filled with handmade wooden toys—watching Lily sleep soundly on the daybed.

Every sound in the house made Emma flinch. The creak of the floorboards, the wind whipping against the windowpane, the distant rumble of thunder.

Her phone buzzed on the nightstand.

Emma snatched it up instantly. It was an unknown, encrypted number. Her heart hammered against her ribs as she slid her thumb across the screen and brought the phone to her ear.

"Hello?" she whispered, careful not to wake Lily.

"You should have taken the deal, Emma."

It was Vanessa’s voice. But the polished, arrogant mistress was gone. Vanessa sounded frantic, her breathing rapid and shallow, background noise suggesting she was driving at high speed.

"Vanessa?" Emma lowered her voice further, stepping into the hallway. "Where are you? What do you want?"

"Listen to me very carefully," Vanessa hissed into the receiver. "Daniel is a fool. He thought he was playing master strategist, but he’s just a pawn. And so were you. But if you don't pull your lawyer back right now, if you don't tell Judge Whitaker that you made up those accusations, we are both going to end up in a ditch!"

"What are you talking about?" Emma snapped, her blood running cold. "You threatened my child! You helped Daniel try to steal my inheritance! You tried to steal my baby!"

"You think I give a damn about Daniel's pathetic little timber land?" Vanessa laughed hysterically, a sound bordering on mania. "That land isn't just timber, Emma! The lithium deposits sit right on top of a massive underground waste route used by the Sterling Cartel's distribution network in the Northeast! Your father didn't own land—he was holding collateral for men who kill people for losing a single shipment!"

Emma stopped at the top of the stairs, gripping the wooden banister until her knuckles hurt. "My father was a carpenter."

"Your father was a money launderer for Sterling Financial!" Vanessa screamed over the phone. "Why do you think Daniel married you, Emma? You think it was love? He was hired! He was hired seven years ago to keep tabs on you, to make sure you never looked into your father's estate until the statute of limitations on the Sterling offshore accounts expired!"

The world felt like it was spinning upside down. Emma felt a sharp, stabbing pain in her lower abdomen and leaned heavily against the wall, gasping for air.

"You're lying," Emma choked out. "Daniel loved me..."

"Daniel loved money!" Vanessa barked. "And six months ago, when he realized how much that lithium deal was worth, he tried to cut Sterling out. He brought me in to forge the power-of-attorney documents so we could sell the land directly to the mining firm and vanish with twelve million dollars before Sterling found out. But now that the judge froze the assets, Sterling’s auditors know the land is tied up in court!"

A heavy thud echoed from the front porch downstairs.

Emma’s breath hitched in her throat. "Vanessa... what was that?"

"They found Daniel an hour ago, Emma," Vanessa whispered, her voice dropping to a terrifying, trembling tremble. "They took him from his hotel room. And they're coming for the land title next. If you have those documents... run."

The line went dead with a harsh click.

Emma stood frozen in the dark hallway. Downstairs, the heavy wooden front door gave a dull, metallic groan, as if someone was applying heavy pressure to the lock.

"Rachel!" Emma gasped into her phone, quickly dialing her attorney's personal line while retreating back into Lily's nursery.

"Emma? What's wrong?" Rachel answered on the second ring, her voice crisp and instantly alert.

"Someone is in the house," Emma whimpered, locking the heavy brass door of the nursery and dragging a heavy wooden dresser in front of it with all the strength her pregnant body could muster. "Vanessa just called. She said Daniel was taken. She said my father... she said they're coming for the papers!"

"Emma, listen to me," Rachel said, her voice dripping with urgent authority. "I'm five minutes away with two state troopers. The security guard outside—have you checked on him?"

Emma crept to the nursery window and looked down through the rain-streaked glass.

The security guard's sedan was parked near the oak tree. The driver's door was swung wide open. The guard was lying motionless on the muddy grass beside it.

A high-pitched scream caught in Emma's throat.

Below her, inside the house, the sound of splintering wood echoed up the stairwell. The front door had been forced open.

Footsteps began to ascend the stairs. Slow, heavy, deliberate steps.

"Mommy?"

Emma turned around. Lily was sitting up in bed, clutching Barnaby the rabbit, her eyes wide with terror as she heard the footsteps approaching.

"Shh," Emma whispered, tears streaming down her face as she rushed to the bed, lifting the six-year-old child into her arms and ducking behind the heavy wooden wardrobe near the window. "Stay completely quiet, baby. Mommy's got you."

The footsteps stopped right outside the nursery door.

The brass doorknob turned slowly, clicking against the lock. Then, a soft, polite knock rattled the wood.

"Emma?"

A woman’s voice called out from the darkness of the hallway. Smooth, elegant, and chillingly familiar.

"Emma, darling... open the door. It's been twenty years. Don't you want to see your mother?"
