Chapter 4 - The Interrogation of Arthur Thomas

Z
The morning mist hung low over the parade grounds of Fort Liberty, wrapping the brick headquarters building in a shroud of gray dampness. At precisely 0555 hours, I walked through the double glass doors of the 18th Airborne Corps tactical command wing. The sentries snapped to immediate attention, their salutes crisp and razor-sharp.
"Carry on," I said quietly, moving down the polished linoleum hallway toward my executive office suite.
Inside, the morning sun was just beginning to bleed through the horizontal blinds, casting striped shadows across the mahogany desk, the brigade battle flags, and the framed campaign citations. Sitting in the leather armchair opposite my desk, sipping coffee from a ceramic mug, was Major Arthur Thomas.
He looked every bit the rising star of the officer corps—hair cut to strict regulation, uniform pressed with razor creases, an air of supreme, unshakeable confidence. When I entered, he rose smoothly and executed a textbook salute.
"Good morning, Colonel. I came as soon as I received your message. I hope everything is manageable with Maya."
I walked behind my desk, remaining standing. I did not return his salute. I did not tell him to be seated. I simply looked at him, letting the silence stretch until the ticking of the wall clock became the only sound in the vast room.
Arthur’s polite smile began to fray at the edges. A tiny muscle beneath his left eye twitched. "Colonel? Is there something wrong with the morning briefing schedule?"
"Sit down, Arthur," I said evenly.
He sat, resting his hands on his knees in an posture of attentive subordination. "Ma'am?"
I opened the top drawer of my desk, pulled out a thick manila folder stamped with red TOP SECRET / NOFORN classifications, and dropped it onto the wood between us. The heavy thud echoed like a gunshot.
"Do you recognize the account numbers in that dossier, Major?" I asked.
Arthur looked down, his eyes scanning the cover page. A momentary flicker of panic flashed across his face, instantly masked by years of calculated deceit. "Colonel, I’m not sure what this is. Looks like a financial audit manifest."
"It’s an audit of the Cayman Horizon Holdings group," I said, stepping around the desk and leaning against the edge, towering over him. "Specifically, an account registered to a shell company called 'Aegis Consulting LLC.' Registered agent: Arthur J. Thomas. Beneficiary address: a private post office box in Southern Pines."
Arthur’s breathing hitched. "Colonel, I can explain that. Aegis Consulting is a blind trust established by my family for real estate investments. It has nothing to do with my military duties."
"Really?" I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "Then why did Julian Vance’s holding company wire four hundred and fifty thousand dollars into that exact account forty-eight hours before you introduced him to Maya at the Governor’s Ball last year?"
The color drained from Arthur’s face so rapidly he looked like a corpse in uniform. His fingers gripped the fabric of his trousers. "Ma'am... that was a legitimate private loan for a commercial property development. Julian and I have known each other since college."
"And the classified deployment schedules for the 82nd Sustainment Brigade?" I continued relentlessly, each word landing like a hammer blow. "The internal readiness manifests you downloaded from the classified server at 0200 hours three weeks ago? The forged orders placing me on an imaginary deployment to CENTCOM that you personally handed to my daughter while she was being drugged and beaten in a Vance compound?"
Arthur sprang to his feet, knocking his coffee mug over. The dark liquid spread across the mahogany surface, dripping onto the floor. "Colonel Vance, that is an outrageous accusation! You are crossing a severe line! I have served this brigade with honor, and I will not sit here and be interrogated based on wild fabrications!"
Before he could take a single step toward the door, the side entrance to the office swung open.
Special Agent Ramirez of the Army Criminal Investigation Division stepped into the room, accompanied by two armed Military Police officers wearing tactical vests and carrying sidearms. Behind them stood Master Sergeant Briggs, his massive arms crossed, his gaze fixed on Arthur like a predator evaluating prey.
"Major Arthur Thomas," Ramirez stated formally, producing a federal arrest warrant. "Pursuant to Article 106a of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, you are hereby placed under arrest for Espionage, Conspiracy to Commit Defraudation of the United States Government, Forgery of Official Documents, and Accessory to Aggravated Felony Assault."
Arthur backed away from the desk, his back hitting the wall. The veneer of sophisticated military professionalism completely collapsed, revealing the sniveling, desperate coward beneath. "You can't do this! The Vance family has connections in the Pentagon! Evelyn Vance will have your stars stripped before lunch, Colonel! You have no idea who you're dealing with!"
I walked up to him until my face was inches from his. "Arthur, you sold out your uniform. You sold out your country. And worst of all, you sold out my daughter to a family of sadistic sociopaths for half a million dollars."
"She was just a civilian girl!" Arthur screamed, losing all composure as the MPs seized his arms and wrenched them behind his back, clicking steel handcuffs onto his wrists. "Julian was going to marry her! It was supposed to be a standard political union! I didn't know he was going to break her ribs!"
"You knew," I whispered coldly. "You knew they were drugging her. You knew about the synthetic neuro-inhibitors. And you sat at my staff meetings every single morning, looked me in the eye, and asked how my family was doing."
Ramirez pulled Arthur toward the door. "Strip his rank insignias, secure his encrypted comms device, and place him in holding cell alpha. Total communications blackout. No civilian phone calls. No bail."
"You won't win this, Elena!" Arthur shrieked as he was dragged down the corridor, his boots dragging against the floor. "The Vances own the judges! They own the press! You’re going to Leavenworth with me!"
The corridor doors slammed shut, cutting off his frantic screams.
Master Sergeant Briggs stepped into the office, his expression stone-cold. "CID has secured his private residence, ma'am. They found two encrypted hard drives containing four years of communications between Thomas, Julian Vance, and Marcus Vance. The financial trails lead directly to the Carolina Municipal Infrastructure Fund."
I walked back to my desk, picked up the manila folder, and looked at Briggs. "The first domino has fallen. Now we take down the entire dynasty."
"What’s the next objective, Colonel?"
"Tonight is the Annual Vance Charity Gala at the Grandover Resort in Greensboro," I said, a cold, predatory smile finally touching my lips. "Evelyn Vance is expecting to host four hundred of the wealthiest and most influential people in the state. She thinks she's going to announce Maya's 'voluntary psychiatric leave' to the media."

"And what are we going to do, ma'am?"
"We are going to attend the gala," I replied. "And we are going to deliver the keynote address."
