Chapter 14 - Playing with Fire

The penthouse suite of Hamilton Towers in downtown Dallas offered a sweeping, panoramic view of the glowing city skyline. But inside the mahogany-paneled office of Richard Hamilton, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.

Richard sat behind his massive glass desk, his face pale with fury as he stared at the television screen mounted on the wall. CNN Business was broadcasting a live segment: CYBER ATTACK AT SAN FRANCISCO TECH SUMMIT TRACED TO HAMILTON GLOBAL AFFILIATE; FEDERAL INVESTIGATION OPENED.

Arthur Sterling stood near the bar, his hands trembling violently as he poured a glass of whiskey. "Richard... we didn't think her engineers could trace the proxy server that quickly. The IT firm assured us the digital footprint was completely invisible!"

"Shut up, Arthur!" Richard roared, slamming his heavy fist onto the glass desk so hard that his crystal water glass shattered. "You told me this attack would ruin her reputation with the Silicon Valley board! You told me she would be fired by midnight! Instead, she turned it into a national publicity stunt that doubled her company's stock valuation overnight!"

The heavy double doors of the penthouse office suddenly clicked open.

Two men in sharp suits stepped aside, allowing me to walk directly into the room. Behind me was Priya Shah, carrying a thick black leather briefcase, and Daniel Mercer, who had flown in from Seattle the moment the news broke.

Richard Hamilton scrambled to his feet, his jaw clenching. "What is the meaning of this? This is a private executive suite! Security!"

"Your security team is currently downstairs speaking with the United States Marshals," Priya said smoothly, unzipping her briefcase and placing a heavy stack of legal documents onto his desk. "We are serving you personally with a federal civil summons under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, alongside a temporary restraining order freezing all capital assets allocated to Legacy Events Group."

Arthur backed away toward the window, his eyes wild with terror. "Ellie... you can't prove I had anything to do with the AV feed!"

Daniel Mercer stepped forward, sliding a tablet across the desk toward Hamilton. "We don't need to prove it through assumptions, Arthur. Three hours ago, the IT contractor you hired in Austin was taken into custody by federal agents. He surrendered his entire WhatsApp conversation history with you, including the fifty-thousand-dollar wire transfer receipt sent directly from Richard Hamilton's personal offshore account in the Cayman Islands."

Hamilton’s face drained of all color. He looked down at the tablet screen, which displayed his personal signature on the wire authorization, side-by-side with text messages from Arthur explicitly ordering the cyber disruption of the San Francisco event.

"You idiot," Hamilton whispered, turning his deadly glare onto Arthur. "You kept text messages?"

"He promised me immunity!" Arthur stammered hysterically, clutching his chest. "He told me he had top-tier lawyers! Ellie, please! I'm your father! If I get convicted of another federal felony while on parole, I'll spend the rest of my life in a high-security prison! My heart can't take it!"

I walked up to the edge of the glass desk, looking down at Arthur with a cold, unyielding detachment that froze the room.

"You spent thirty years pretending to be a businessman, Arthur," I said, my voice quiet, smooth, and devastatingly calm. "And when you failed, you tried to steal from your daughter. When that failed, you tried to destroy my life's work. You brought Richard Hamilton into this fight because you thought his money would make up for your complete lack of competence."

I turned my gaze to Richard Hamilton, who was standing frozen behind his desk.

"Mr. Hamilton," I continued, "your legal counsel has thirty minutes to execute a full, unconditional surrender. You will liquidate Legacy Events Group immediately, assign all proprietary event assets to Aegis as compensatory damages, and issue a national press release apologizing for the cyber intrusion. If you refuse, my legal team will file criminal charges for felony computer intrusion and corporate conspiracy by eight o'clock tomorrow morning."

Hamilton swallowed hard, his arrogant posture completely collapsing. He looked at the evidence on the tablet, then at Priya's cold, victorious smile, and finally at me. He knew he was facing federal prison time and the complete destruction of his multi-billion-dollar reputation.

"Get out," Hamilton whispered, sinking limply back into his leather chair. "My attorneys will draft the surrender agreement tonight."

I looked at Arthur one last time. He was trembling against the window, a completely broken man who had gambled his entire existence on spite and lost everything.

"Goodbye, Arthur," I said quietly.

I turned and walked out of the penthouse, leaving the remnants of their foolish, arrogant war behind me forever.
