Chapter 4 - The Midnight Confrontation

“In the bathroom! Now!” Caleb whispered forcefully, grabbing Forde by the arm and shoving him toward the small, dimly lit private restroom inside the suite. Forde slipped inside smoothly, pulling the door shut until it was open only a fraction of an inch.
Caleb grabbed a dirty linen bag, throwing it over his shoulder just as the heavy wooden door of Room 412 swung open.
Vanessa Vance stepped into the room. She was wearing a beige Burberry trench coat, damp with rain, her golden hair swept back impeccably. Behind her stood Julian Ross—a sharp-featured man in his early fortys, wearing a bespoke navy suit and holding a leather document folder under his arm.
Vanessa paused, her sharp blue eyes flicking instantly to Caleb.
“Who are you?” she demanded, her voice cool, sharp, and laden with immediate suspicion. “What are you doing in here at this hour?”
Caleb forced his posture to slump, adopting the weary, deferential stance of an overworked hospital employee. He adjusted the strap of the linen bag. “Just changing the linens and checking the vitals log, ma’am. Night shift routine.”
Vanessa looked at him up and down, her eyes lingering on his faded blue scrubs and worn sneakers. A look of mild disgust crossed her face—the way one looks at a smudge on a window. “Leave us. We need private time with my husband.”
“Of course, ma’am,” Caleb said quietly. He walked toward the door, keeping his eyes lowered. As he passed Julian, the executive didn't even bother to look at him, busy tapping his foot impatiently on the floorboards.
“Wait,” Vanessa called out suddenly.
Caleb’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He stopped, holding his breath, and turned around slowly. “Yes, ma’am?”
Vanessa stepped toward the bedside table, her sharp nails clicking against the plastic tray. She picked up the small paper cup Caleb had brought earlier. She looked inside, then stared at Caleb.
“Did you give him water?” she asked, her voice dropping into a low, dangerous register.
“Just a few sips, ma’am,” Caleb said, keeping his voice completely devoid of emotion. “He said his throat was dry.”
Vanessa’s eyes narrowed. “My husband is on strict fluid restrictions per Dr. Vance’s orders. Do not bring him anything—anything at all—without clearing it through me first. Is that clear?”
“Understood, ma’am. My apologies,” Caleb murmured, taking a slow step back into the hallway. He pulled the door shut behind him, but he didn't leave. He stepped into the alcove beside the room, putting his ear close to the crack between the door and the frame.
Inside, Vanessa walked over to Arthur’s bed. The hypocritical warmth returned to her face like a mask being lowered over cold steel.
“Arthur, darling,” she purred, leaning down to touch his cheek. Arthur flinched away slightly, but she simply laughed softly, a low, cruel sound. “Still stubborn? It’s almost midnight. Julian brought the updated power of attorney forms. The doctors say your kidneys are starting to fail now too. We just need your mark on these papers so I can manage the liquidation of the European accounts before... well, before the end.”
Julian stepped up, opening the leather folder. “It’s standard procedure, Arthur. It gives Vanessa execution authority over the offshore assets so the tax burdens don't eat up the estate when you pass.”
Arthur looked at Julian—the man he had hired ten years ago as a mid-level analyst, the man he had mentored, promoted, and given millions in bonuses.
“You... snake,” Arthur croaked, his voice barely audible over the hum of the monitor.
Julian didn't flinch. He simply checked his gold Patek Philippe watch. “Save your breath, Arthur. You built a magnificent empire, but you’re old, and your heart is done. Let Vanessa take it from here.”
“Sign it, Arthur,” Vanessa insisted, pressing a heavy fountain pen into Arthur’s limp fingers. “Or I can have the doctors sedate you for ‘restless delirium’ and sign it under full medical proxy anyway. Don't make your last hours unpleasant.”
Arthur opened his eyes wide, looking past Vanessa, looking directly at the small crack in the bathroom door where he knew Harrison Forde was recording every single word on a hidden directional microphone.
“I won't... sign,” Arthur said, gathering every ounce of strength left in his deteriorating body. “You get... nothing.”
Vanessa’s expression turned utterly cold. The loving wife façade vanished completely, replaced by a mask of dark rage. She grabbed Arthur’s wrist, pressing the pen onto the paper by force. “You don't have a choice, Arthur! You’re dying! You’re a corpse taking up bed space!”
“Let go of him, Mrs. Vance.”
The voice didn't come from Arthur. It came from behind them.
Vanessa and Julian spun around. Caleb Miller had re-entered the room. But he wasn't slumping anymore. His back was straight, his chin was up, and he was holding a smartphone in his hand, its screen lit up with a live stream indicator.
“What is the meaning of this?” Julian snapped, taking a step toward Caleb. “Get the hell out of here before I call security and have you fired!”
“You can’t fire me, Mr. Ross,” Caleb said smoothly, his voice ringingly clear in the quiet room. “And as for calling security... I’ve already called the Cook County Sheriff’s Department. They’re downstairs.”
Vanessa sneered, though a tiny flicker of doubt crossed her eyes. “On what grounds, you little nobody?”
“On the grounds of attempted murder,” a second voice announced.
The bathroom door swung open, and Harrison Forde stepped out into the bright light, holding his aluminum briefcase and adjusting his tailored coat.
Julian’s face went completely white. “Forde? What the hell are you doing here?”
“Protecting my client’s estate,” Forde said calmly. He tapped his tablet screen. “Mrs. Vance, as of 11:15 PM tonight, Arthur Vance revoked all previous power of attorney documents and dissolved the 2021 Vance Family Trust. A new trust has been established. All assets—including the houses, the Porsche, the investment portfolios, and the European holdings—have been transferred into an irrevocable trust.”
Vanessa gasped, stepping back from the bed as if she had been struck. “That’s impossible! He’s legally incompetent! He can’t alter his estate without my signature!”
“He can, and he did,” Forde replied with a sharp, cold smile. “And I suggest you refrain from yelling, Mrs. Vance. The microphone in my pocket just captured you threatening to forcibly sedate your husband to forge his signature. The audio has already been uploaded to a secure cloud server held by federal prosecutors.”

Vanessa turned her glare to Caleb, her eyes burning with pure venom. “You... you organized this? You quiet little rodent?”
“I’m just an orderly, Mrs. Vance,” Caleb said, looking her dead in the eye without flinching. “But as of midnight... I’m also the sole trustee of the Arthur Vance Estate.”
