Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN IN THE BLACK CAR

Z
The police treated the photograph seriously.
Within hours, officers reviewed traffic cameras near Maya’s apartment and the park where Eleanor and I walked most mornings. They found a black sedan parked across the street for nearly forty minutes.
The license plate was partially blocked.
But the driver’s face appeared once in a camera reflection.
It was Vanessa Cole.
When Evelyn told me, I felt something inside me go cold.
“Why would Vanessa follow us?” I asked.
“She claims she hasn’t,” Evelyn said. “Her attorney is denying everything.”
“Then why is she in the footage?”
“We don’t know yet.”
I wanted to believe Vanessa had changed.
Not because I trusted her, but because I was exhausted by the idea that every person Daniel touched was part of another trap.
Still, I agreed to meet her in a public place with my attorney present.
Vanessa arrived at a quiet coffee shop near the waterfront wearing sunglasses and a black coat. She looked around constantly before sitting down.
“I didn’t send the messages,” she said immediately.
“But you followed my daughter.”
“I followed you because I thought you were being watched.”
I stared at her.
“What?”
“Someone has been following me too.”
Vanessa slid a folder across the table.
Inside were photographs of her apartment building, her car, and a man standing outside her office. There were threatening notes left under her door.
You betrayed him.
You will pay for it.
“You think Daniel is behind this?” I asked.
“I don’t know,” she whispered. “But he knows people. Private security firms. Fixers. People who make problems disappear.”
Evelyn’s expression remained unreadable.
“Why didn’t you go to the police?”
“Because they’ll think I’m trying to save myself.”
“You are trying to save yourself.”
“Yes,” Vanessa said. “But I’m also trying to save you.”
The honesty in that answer disturbed me.
Vanessa looked at me directly.
“Daniel is not acting alone.”
My heart began to beat faster.
“Who is helping him?”
“I don’t know his name. Daniel used to call him ‘the Senator.’ Not an actual senator, I think. A nickname. He handled political favors, legal introductions, media pressure. Daniel said he could make people disappear from the market without anyone realizing.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Did this person have access to Mercer Dynamics?”
“Not officially. But Daniel met him several times at the Manhattan penthouse.”
The penthouse.
The place I had thought was my home.
The place where Daniel hid his diary beside my passport.
The place where he may have planned everything.
That night, federal investigators obtained a warrant to search Daniel’s former office and several company devices. Meanwhile, local police increased patrols around Maya’s building.
But Daniel was not arrested.
Not yet.
He was still free.
Still speaking through lawyers.
Still pretending he was the victim.
Then, two days later, Vanessa disappeared.
She missed a scheduled deposition.
Her phone was found in her apartment, smashed against the kitchen floor.
Her front door was unlocked.
And on the counter was a single white envelope addressed to me.
Inside was a key.
Attached to it was a note in Vanessa’s handwriting.
Claire,
If anything happens to me, go to the penthouse storage unit. Locker 714. Do not tell Daniel. Do not tell anyone from Mercer.
Trust Evelyn only.
I read the note three times.
Then I looked up at Evelyn.
“You think she’s alive?”
“I don’t know.”
“Should we call the police?”
“Yes. But we should also secure the locker before someone else does.”
The storage unit was in Manhattan.
I had not returned there since I boarded the plane pregnant and furious almost a year earlier.
The thought of going back made my chest tighten.
But Vanessa had left the key for me.
Not for Daniel.
Not for the board.
For me.
The next morning, Evelyn and I flew to New York with federal investigators waiting at the airport.
As our car crossed into Manhattan, I saw the Mercer Dynamics tower rising above the city.
Once, it had represented Daniel’s power.
Now it looked like a monument to everything he had lost.
Locker 714 was in the basement of a private storage facility two blocks from the penthouse.
Evelyn stood beside me as I inserted the key.
The metal door rolled upward with a harsh sound.
Inside was one blue folder.
One hard drive.
And a sealed envelope with my name written in Daniel’s handwriting.
I opened the envelope.
There was only one sentence inside.
If you are reading this, Vanessa finally understood who she was sleeping with.

Then the lights went out.
