Chapter 5 - The Stroll Through St. Matthew’s

The morning sun reflected off the polished linoleum corridors of St. Matthew’s Hospital maternity ward, creating a sterile, blinding glare. I stood near the central nursing station dressed in a tailored black wool coat over comfortable maternity trousers, my posture deliberately rigid despite the dull ache in my pelvic floor. Beside me stood the custom three-seat neonatal stroller, securely holding Ava, Noah, and Miles. All three were swaddled in soft cream-colored blankets, sleeping peacefully under tiny matching beanies.
Dad stood twenty feet back near the elevator banks, accompanied by Marcus Vance and two plainclothes private security officers.
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the maternity hall swung open with a dramatic thud.
Tyler strode in with his signature swagger, wearing his tailored blazer and dark designer jeans. Beside him walked Cassandra, still wearing a metallic silver birthday tiara cocked playfully on her head, clutching a massive cluster of helium balloons that read “Welcome Little Angels!” and “Boss Lady Cassandra!” She dragged a monogrammed rolling suitcase behind her, laughing loudly at something Tyler had just whispered.
Tyler marched directly up to the main reception desk, completely ignoring the quiet rules of the infant recovery floor.
“Where is my wife?” Tyler demanded, rapping his knuckles impatiently against the countertop. “I’m Tyler Thorne, Chief Operating Officer of Hartwell Logistics. I’m here to collect Clara Hartwell and our triplets for private discharge transport.”
Nurse Elena Morris, who had stayed on duty past her twelve-hour shift specifically to witness this moment, slowly looked up from her computer monitor. She looked at Tyler’s arrogant expression, shifted her gaze to Cassandra’s ridiculous party crown, and then looked straight back into Tyler’s eyes.
“She was discharged four days ago, Mr. Thorne,” Nurse Morris said, her voice dripping with icy contempt. “Isn't she home?”
Tyler’s face instantly drained of color. The cocky smirk vanished, replaced by a twitching, disoriented mask of confusion. “What do you mean four days ago? She hemorrhaged on Friday night! She was supposed to be in critical observation until I authorized her release!”
“She didn't need your authorization,” a calm voice rang out.
Tyler whipped around. His eyes widened in shock as he spotted me standing by the stroller, my chin held high, my bare left ring finger resting deliberately against the black leather handle.
For a second, the entire hallway fell deathly silent. Then, Tyler charged toward me like a wounded bull.
“Clara! What the hell is the meaning of this?” Tyler roared, completely abandoning his polished public persona. He lunged forward and grabbed my right wrist in an iron grip, his fingers digging into my bone. “Where have you been? Who authorized this stroller? Why aren’t you at the estate? I told you to have the babies ready for the press shoot!”
The sudden physical yank pulled against my surgical incision, sending a blinding bolt of pain through my midsection. I staggered back a few inches, catching the stroller with my right foot to keep it from rolling.
“Let go of me, Tyler,” I commanded, my voice flat, cold, and echoing with absolute authority.
“I am your husband!” he hissed, his face inches from mine, his breath smelling of stale airport scotch. “You don't make unilateral decisions about my children or my household! You turn your phone back on and undo whatever you did to my accounts right now!”
Behind him, Cassandra stood frozen in place, her plastic smile melting into utter horror as she saw the sheer ferocity in my eyes.
Before Tyler could tighten his grip further, Nurse Morris hit the red emergency duress button under the reception desk. A shrill alarm chimed through the ceiling speakers. Simultaneously, our two private security guards closed the distance in two seconds flat, grabbing Tyler by the elbows and twisting his arms behind his back with effortless precision, forcing him to release my wrist.
“Get your filthy hands off me!” Tyler screamed, thrashing against the guards. “Do you know who I am? I run Hartwell Medical Logistics! I will have this entire hospital defunded!”
At that exact second, Tyler’s iPhone began buzzing furiously in his pocket. It didn't stop. Call after call broke through.
Marcus Vance stepped forward from the shadows, holding a tablet displaying a live board conference call.
“That would be the Chairman of the Board calling to inform you of your immediate termination for cause, Mr. Thorne,” Marcus said smoothly. “And the second call is the Maryland State Police, who are currently waiting at your executive office to execute a search warrant for grand larceny and wire fraud.”
Tyler stopped thrashing. His wide, bloodshot eyes darted frantically from Marcus to me, then to the silent security cameras mounted directly above the desk that had captured every second of his assault.

“You... you set me up,” Tyler stammered, his arrogance finally cracking into naked terror.
“No, Tyler,” I said, stepping forward until I was inches from his restrained frame. “You set yourself up the moment you chose champagne and Cassandra over the lives of your dying children. Now, get out of my sight before I have you arrested for domestic assault on hospital grounds.”
