Chapter 5 - The Bait is Cast

The conversation with Daniel was the hardest one I had ever forced myself to initiate.
We sat on the back patio, the cool evening air carrying the scent of damp earth and coming winter. I had laid out the entire forensic trail before him—the bank statements, the signature verifications, the corporate filings linking his uncle Arthur to the destruction of his family's legacy.
Daniel sat in silence for a long time, his head buried in his hands. When he finally looked up, his eyes were bloodshot, filled with a profound, crushing sorrow that broke my heart.
"My father trusted him, Clara," Daniel said, his voice cracked with emotion. "When my dad was dying, he held my hand and told me that if I ever got lost in the financial side of the business, to call Uncle Arthur. He told me Arthur would always protect the family name."
I moved my chair closer, wrapping my arms around him, letting him feel my warmth, my solidity. "Arthur didn't see a family name, Daniel. He saw an ATM. He used Carol's greed and Vanessa's vanity to shield himself while he bled you dry."
Daniel took a deep, ragged breath, his jaw tightening as the sorrow slowly began to give way to something sharper, harder. "What do we need to do?"
"We need to play the part of a desperate, broken couple," I said, looking into his eyes. "Tomorrow morning, you are going to call the lead auditor for the Singapore conglomerate. You are going to tell them that due to 'unforeseen structural discrepancies' found during an internal review, Hale Construction is facing a major liquidity crisis. You are going to sound panicked. You are going to ask for an emergency intervention from their senior advisor."
"From Arthur," Daniel whispered.
"He won't be able to resist," I explained. "To trigger the hostile takeover clause, the senior advisor must personally verify the default conditions on-site at your headquarters. Arthur has been operating from the shadows for years. But to finish this, to finally claim ownership of Hale Construction, he has to step onto our turf."
Daniel looked toward the house, where our children were sleeping safely in their beds. "And when he gets here?"
"When he gets here, Mira and I will have completed the real-time tracking of his active routing sessions. The moment he logs into the corporate portal from your office to execute the default paperwork, he will be authorizing an internal transfer within a monitored environment. Detective Ortiz has already coordinated with the federal financial crimes division. They can't extradite him from Singapore easily, but if he commits a felony on U.S. soil, inside a designated federal monitoring perimeter, they can arrest him on the spot."

Daniel was quiet for a moment, analyzing the strategy with the precision of a master builder checking a structural blueprint. "It’s a high-stakes trap, Clara. If he detects even a hint of suspicion, he stays in Singapore, triggers the clause remotely through his legal team, and we lose the company anyway."
"He won't suspect anything," I said, my voice steady, carrying the absolute certainty of a woman who had already looked ruin in the face and refused to blink. "Because he thinks he’s smarter than us. He thinks a mother who nearly died protecting her children is too weak to play the game at his level. Let’s show him how wrong he is."
