Chapter 10 - The Standoff on the 30th Floor

Dad didn't hesitate. He stepped directly in front of me, leveling his own handgun straight at Ryan’s chest.
“Put the gun down, Ryan,” Dad said, his voice dropping into a register of terrifying calm. “The building is surrounded by police. You bypassed the security desk by cutting the basement power line, but the alarm was tripped five seconds ago. You have less than two minutes before SWAT clears this floor.”
Ryan laughed—a wild, manic sound that echoed off the high glass walls of the penthouse. “I don't care about two minutes, Julian! I don't care about the FBI! You ruined me! You took my money, my career, my mother—everything!”
“You ruined yourself, Ryan!” I yelled from behind my father’s shoulder, stepping out so he could see my face. “You poisoned my mother! You drugged me! You tried to steal everything my family built!”
“Your mother was an obstacle!” Ryan roared, his gun shaking violently as his finger tightened on the trigger. “She saw through me from day one! She was going to cut you out of the estate if you married me! I did it for us, Claire! Everything I did, I did to secure our future!”
“You didn't do it for us,” I said, taking a slow, calculated step toward him, despite Dad’s silent hand trying to push me back. “You did it because you’re a coward. You’re a parasite who feeds on people who care about you. Elaine raised a monster, and you proved her right every single day of your life.”
Ryan’s eyes flared with explosive fury. “Shut up! Shut your mouth!”
“Fire the gun, Ryan,” I challenged, my voice deadly steady, taking another step forward. The terrifying fear that had controlled me for six years was completely gone, replaced by a pure, unyielding fire. “Fire it. Prove to the world what you really are. But you won't leave this room alive. My father won't miss.”
Ryan’s gaze darted frantically between my eyes and the dark barrel of my father’s gun. He saw no hesitation in Dad’s posture, no terror in my face. For the first time in his life, he was stripped of his money, his influence, his lies, and his control. He was just a pathetic, cornered man holding a weapon he was too terrified to use effectively.
Out in the elevator shaft, the loud, heavy mechanical grinding of the emergency backup lift began to rise rapidly toward the 30th floor. Red emergency lights began flashing through the frosted glass windows of the foyer.
“SWAT TEAM! BREAKING DOOR!” heavy boots slammed against the outer corridor doors.
Ryan panicked. He swung the gun toward me in a desperate, blind gesture—
BANG!
A single gunshot shattered the silence of the room.
Ryan dropped his weapon with a sharp cry of pain as a bullet struck his wrist. He stumbled backward, collapsing onto the hardwood floor, clutching his bleeding arm as the penthouse doors exploded inward.
A dozen SWAT officers in tactical gear swarmed the room, shouting orders, pinning Ryan to the floor under a sea of boots, weapons, and heavy red laser sights.
My father slowly lowered his handgun, engaged the safety, and turned to me. He didn't say a word. He just opened his arms.

I stepped into his embrace, holding him tight as the police threw Ryan into heavy steel restraints, dragging him out into the dark, rainy night forever.
