Chapter 6 - The Whistleblower Trap

Chloe sat on the edge of the living room sofa, holding a steaming mug of tea with both hands. The house was dead quiet, save for the hum of the refrigerator in the kitchen.

"I got a call from the police department two days ago," Chloe began, her voice shaking violently. "They told me Ethan had been arrested and that Mom was under investigation for federal wire fraud and elder abuse against Uncle Arthur. I couldn't believe it, Rachel. I flew straight here to ask Mom what was going on, and she..." Chloe broke off, a fresh wave of tears spilling down her cheeks.

"What did she say?" I asked, sitting across from her in an armchair.

"She didn't care about the fraud! She didn't care about Uncle Arthur!" Chloe sobbed. "She was furious at you! She sat in her living room amidst all the police boxes, screaming that you were a heartless traitor who owed her family everything, and that she was going to make sure Ethan ruined your career even if it meant going down together!"

I leaned back, my expression hardening. "She tried, Chloe. She sent fake invoices to Hartwell’s ethics committee claiming I took kickbacks in Chicago."

Chloe’s eyes widened in horror. "Oh my god... Rachel, I am so sorry. I am so, so ashamed to be related to them."

"You don't have to apologize for their actions, Chloe," I said gently. "You left for California years ago to get away from Linda’s toxicity."

"That’s not all," Chloe said, setting her teacup down on the table and opening her purse. She pulled out an old flash drive and a stack of printed emails. "When I was staying at Mom’s house last night, Ethan came over. He was drunk, panicking, talking about how his lawyer said he was going to serve at least three to five years in federal prison unless he could force you into dropping the civil claims and testifying on his behalf as a character witness."

I narrowed my eyes. "He’s desperate."

"He’s more than desperate, Rachel. He and Mom had a backup plan," Chloe revealed, sliding the flash drive toward me. "Six months ago, Ethan installed a keylogger software on your personal laptop when you were visiting Mom for Thanksgiving. He recorded every login credential, every personal password, and downloaded copies of your internal Hartwell project emails."

A cold thrill of anger raced through my veins. "He did what?"

"He has a hidden cloud folder containing your personal files, including sensitive medical distribution maps from Hartwell," Chloe explained, her voice filled with quiet urgency. "His plan was to leak those proprietary logistics maps to Hartwell’s biggest competitor, Vanguard Healthcare, and then frame you for corporate espionage if you ever filed for divorce."

I stared at the flash drive on the table. The level of premeditated malice was staggering. Ethan hadn't just reacted to my promotion seven days ago—he had been holding a gun to my career for months, waiting for the moment I stepped out of line so he could pull the trigger.

"Why are you giving me this, Chloe?" I asked, looking up into her eyes. "He’s your brother."

Chloe looked straight back at me, her gaze unwavering. "Because he’s a criminal, Rachel. He and Mom destroyed Uncle Arthur’s life, and they tried to destroy yours. You supported him for ten years while he did nothing but leech off you. If I keep quiet, I’m no better than them. Take this to the police."

I reached out and picked up the flash drive. Its metallic surface felt ice-cold in my palm.

"Thank you, Chloe," I said quietly. "You just handed me the final hammer."

Ten minutes after Chloe left, I called Detective Raymond Vance directly on his cell phone, along with Marcus Sterling from Hartwell Legal.

"Detective Vance," I said, my voice steady and deadly calm. "I have just acquired physical evidence of illegal wiretapping, corporate espionage, and federal data theft committed by Ethan Miller. I need you to issue an immediate arrest warrant for corporate espionage and computer crimes before he attempts to destroy the cloud servers."

"Say no more, Rachel," Detective Vance replied. "We’re on our way."
