Chapter 14 - The Hound at the Door

Sending Marcus’s head to Moscow was a declaration of total war, an act of supreme arrogance that severed any possibility of a diplomatic resolution. For weeks, the city of Chicago held its breath, waiting for the Russian retaliation. It didn't come in the form of a massive army or a car bomb. It came in the dead of winter, silent, precise, and infinitely more terrifying. It came in the form of a single man. The underworld called him 'The Hound.' Alexei Volkov's personal phantom, a mythic assassin who had toppled cartels and erased entire bloodlines without leaving a single fingerprint.
We had retreated to the Callaway estate in the suburbs—a sprawling, fortified mansion surrounded by high walls, electrified fences, and fifty heavily armed guards. It was a fortress designed to withstand a siege. But The Hound didn't lay siege. He infiltrated.
It started at 2:00 AM. A massive blizzard had descended upon the state, plunging the estate into a whiteout. I was awake in my study, going over the offshore accounts, the glow of the monitors illuminating the dark wood paneling. Ava was asleep down the hall in her reinforced bedroom. Reed was in the west wing, coordinating with our European allies.
Suddenly, the security monitors flickered and died. The estate was plunged into absolute darkness. The backup generators, designed to kick in within seconds, remained dead. The silence was absolute, oppressive, and utterly terrifying.
I drew the pistol from my desk drawer, my heart hammering a frantic rhythm against my ribs. I tapped the comms unit in my ear. "Reed? Report."
Static. Total, dead static. The internal comms had been jammed.
I didn't wait. I slipped out of the study, moving silently down the pitch-black hallway toward Ava's room. The darkness was absolute, broken only by the sporadic flashes of lightning from the winter storm outside. As I reached the intersection of the main hall, I smelled it. Copper. Blood.
I flicked on the tactical flashlight mounted under my pistol barrel. The beam cut through the dark, illuminating the horrifying truth. Six of our elite guards, men who had survived military tours, were dead on the floor. Their throats had been slashed with surgical precision. There had been no gunfire, no struggle. They had been slaughtered like sheep in the dark.
"Mommy?" a tiny, terrified voice echoed from down the hall.
"Ava!" I yelled, abandoning stealth and sprinting toward her room.
I reached her door just as a massive shadow detached itself from the darkness at the end of the hall. The Hound. He wore no armor, just a sleek, dark suit, moving with the terrifying, silent grace of an apex predator. In his hand, he held a long, curved blade that gleamed with fresh blood.
He didn't speak. He just lunged.
I raised my pistol and fired, the muzzle flashes blinding in the darkness. The Hound moved with impossible speed, dodging the shots, the bullets tearing into the antique wallpaper behind him. He closed the distance in seconds, sweeping his leg out and kicking the gun from my hand. It skittered away into the dark.
He grabbed me by the throat, slamming me violently against the wall. The impact knocked the wind out of my lungs, stars exploding in my vision. He raised the blade, his eyes cold, dead voids.
"Alexei wants the child," The Hound whispered, his voice like grinding glass. "But he wants your head."
Before he could bring the knife down, a deafening roar shattered the silence. Reed appeared at the end of the hall, bleeding from a deep gash on his forehead, holding a massive shotgun. He fired blindly into the dark. The buckshot tore into The Hound’s shoulder, sending him staggering backward, releasing his grip on my throat.

"Run, Sarah!" Reed bellowed, racking the shotgun for another blast. "Get her to the panic room! Go!"
I didn't hesitate. I threw open Ava's door, scooping her terrified, crying form into my arms, and bolted toward the hidden stairwell, leaving Reed alone in the dark to fight a monster.
