Chapter 3 - The House of Cards

The private elevator ride down to the subterranean executive garage was suffocatingly silent. Victoria’s manicured nails dug so hard into Preston’s shoulder that the boy whimpered, pulling away to clutch his participation ribbon like a protective talisman. My wife’s face was flushed an ugly shade of crimson, the expensive foundation she wore cracking around her tight, furious mouth.
"Do you have any idea what you've done?" Victoria hissed the second the elevator doors slid shut. Her voice was low, vibrating with pure venom. "My father's board meets tomorrow morning. If the SEC freezes our trading accounts, the overseas credit lines will default by noon! Who the hell is that woman, Julian? And why do those disgusting street rats have your face?"
"I told you to watch how you talk about them," I warned, staring straight ahead at the polished bronze elevator doors. My own reflection looked haggard, aged by a decade in the span of thirty minutes. "Those 'street rats' just dismantled a twelve-billion-dollar enterprise with a single tablet in under ten minutes. If you had half their intelligence, Victoria, you wouldn't have spent five million dollars on prep schools for a boy who can't calculate a standard deviation."
"How dare you!" Victoria raised her handbag to strike me, but the elevator chimed, the doors parting to reveal our private underground bay.
Waiting beside my armored Maybach were not our usual drivers, but two men in tailored charcoal suits holding federal credentials. The flashing yellow light from a security vehicle bounced off the concrete pillars, casting jagged shadows across the polished floor.
"Julian Sterling?" the taller agent asked, stepping forward and flashing a badge from the Department of Justice. "I'm Special Agent Vance. This is Agent Miller. We have a court-ordered preservation of evidence injunction for all hardware, personal mobile devices, and server backups associated with Sterling Dominion."
Victoria let out a theatrical gasp. "This is private property! Do you know who my father is? He plays golf with the Attorney General!"
"Not this year, ma'am," Agent Vance replied without so much as glancing in her direction. He kept his eyes locked on me. "Mr. Sterling, your personal phone, please. Now."
My hands shook slightly as I reached into my breast pocket and handed over the gold-trimmed titanium device. Thirteen years of calculated maneuvering, high-society galas, private jet summits, and relentless ambition were evaporating right before my eyes. As the agent sealed my phone into an anti-static evidence bag, a terrifying clarity washed over me: Elena hadn't simply wanted to beat me; she wanted to surgically excise every single trophy I had built using her life's work.
"You can take your personal vehicle home, Mr. Sterling," Agent Vance said calmly. "However, federal marshals are currently stationed at your corporate headquarters in Manhattan. You are advised not to leave the state."
Victoria didn't wait for me. She dragged Preston toward the passenger side of the car, slamming the door so hard the heavy glass rattled. When I slid into the driver’s seat, she turned on me like a rabid animal.
"Take us to my father’s estate in Greenwich," she demanded, her voice shrill and trembling. "He will fix this. He has judges on retainer. We will crush that woman with counter-suits until she doesn't have enough money to buy food for those bastards!"
"Shut up!" I roared, slamming both palms against the steering wheel. The sudden violence of my outburst made both Victoria and Preston jump in terror. "You don't understand anything! Arthur can't fix this! Arthur signed the original transfer contracts! The moment federal prosecutors look at those files, your father isn't going to a golf club—he’s going to a federal penitentiary!"
Victoria stared at me, her mouth hanging open in complete disbelief. "You... you actually did it? You stole it from her?"
"I took what I thought I needed to survive in your father's world," I whispered, the engine roaring to life as I pulled out of the garage and into the rain-slicked Manhattan streets. "And now she's come to collect the interest."
As we drove through the dark city corridors, electronic billboards towered overhead. At Times Square, the tournament broadcast was already replaying the historic moment on massive digital screens. Leo and Ethan’s faces stood thirty feet tall against the night sky, calm and triumphant, framed by breaking news tickers: TECH TITAN STERLING DOMINION ACCUSED OF DECADE-LONG IP THEFT; TEEN PRODIGIES EXPOSE FRAUD LIVE ON AIR.
Below their portraits, the media had already dubbed them "The Holloway Prodigies."
My phone was gone, but the car’s central dashboard began buzzing erratically with incoming alerts routed through the vehicle's satellite system. Board members, private equity investors, international partners—hundreds of urgent notifications flooding the queue. Among them was an encrypted email that flashed directly on the console's dashboard display. It was from an anonymous server, containing a single line of text and a secure video link.
I hit the steering wheel control to accept the incoming video.
Elena appeared on the high-definition screen. She was sitting in a modest, brightly lit study lined with dense mathematical texts and computer architecture manuals. Leo and Ethan sat on either side of her, looking calm and collected over mugs of hot tea.
"I know you're heading to the Greenwich estate, Julian," Elena said through the car's speakers, her voice crystal clear over the sound of rain beating against the windshield. "Save the gasoline. Arthur’s board of trustees voted twenty minutes ago to remove both you and him from all corporate charters to protect the family trust. You are officially locked out."
Victoria let out a strangled shriek from the passenger seat. "That's a lie! My father would never abandon me!"
"Your father cares about the Sterling name, Victoria, not you," Elena replied coolly. "And right now, the Sterling name is toxic." Elena looked directly into the camera lens, her eyes locking onto mine through the digital stream. "Julian, you wanted a family legacy so desperately that you traded your own flesh and blood for a counterfeit empire. Now, you have neither. Don't bother calling Arthur. Don't bother calling the lawyers. If you want to salvage what little remains of your freedom, you will meet me tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM at the public legal clinic on 4th Street. Come alone."
The screen flickered black.

Victoria was weeping uncontrollably now, her polished facade completely shattered as she dialed Arthur’s direct line on Preston's phone, only to hear an automated operator stating the line had been disconnected.
I gripped the steering wheel, my knuckles turning white. The empire I had sacrificed everything for was gone in a single evening. But worse than the loss of billions was the realization that the two boys who possessed my blood, my mind, and my face looked at me not as a father, but as an insect they had methodically crushed beneath their heel.
