Chapter 3: Shifting Tides

The revelation of Emma Carter’s true identity spread through Blackstone Preparatory Academy like a wildfire fueled by pure panic. The atmosphere in the hallways changed overnight. The toxic hierarchy that had governed the school for decades—where net worth determined your worth as a human being—instantly fractured.

The very students who had once turned their backs when Madison mocked Emma were now desperately trying to win her favor.

The Hypocrisy of the Elite

Every morning became an exercise in absurdity for Emma.

  • The Cafeteria: The table where Emma used to sit alone was now surrounded by the school’s most popular athletes and heirs, all lingering nearby, hoping she would invite them to sit.

  • The Locker Room: Wealthy students suddenly offered to carry her books, buy her lunch, or lend her designer jackets—ironically, the exact same brands they had mocked her for lacking just weeks prior.

  • The Faculty: Even the teachers, usually aloof and demanding, treated Emma with a fragile, tiptoeing reverence. Her essays were graded with glowing praise, and her quiet demeanor was suddenly reinterpreted by the staff as "regal understatement."

Emma, however, remained entirely unchanged. She still wore her worn white sneakers. She still preferred her faded gray T-shirt on casual days. When people offered her gifts or tried to strike up sycophantic conversations, she would simply look at them with her calm, searching eyes, offer a polite nod, and walk away. She did not seek revenge, nor did she accept their sudden, hollow friendships.

"They aren't looking at me," Emma noted quietly one afternoon to Mr. Harrison, the old school librarian who had been the only person to treat her kindly before the incident. "They are looking at a crown that isn't even on my head yet."

The Announcement

Two weeks into Madison’s suspension, Headmaster Vance called an emergency assembly in the grand auditorium. The room was packed, the air thick with whispered anticipation.

"Students of Blackstone," Headmaster Vance began, adjusting his glasses nervously. "As you know, our annual Blackstone Benefactors' Gala is approaching this weekend. This year, we are profoundly honored to announce that the royal house will be officially hosting the event. Her Majesty has requested that the gala serve as a fundraiser for educational equality across the region."

The crowd erupted into murmurs. Everyone’s eyes immediately darted toward Emma, who sat in the middle row, expressionless.

"Furthermore," Vance continued, clearing his throat, "Her Majesty has requested that the student body take an active role in hosting. Attendance is mandatory. And, at the explicit request of the royal palace, certain students currently undergoing disciplinary action will be permitted to return strictly to fulfill community service duties during the event."

Emma knew exactly what that meant. Madison Blake was coming back, not as a guest, but as a servant to the very peers she used to rule.
