Chapter 15 - BROADCASTING TO THE WOLVES

The newsroom erupted into screams as the man in black tactical gear strode through the shattered glass, a suppressed rifle raised to his shoulder.
"Get down!" Thorne yelled, grabbing my arm and pulling me behind his heavy steel desk.
"Everyone out of the building!" the hitman roared, his voice echoing off the concrete ceilings. "I only want the woman!"
The journalists didn't need to be told twice. They scrambled for the emergency exits, leaving Thorne and me huddled in the back corner.
"Upload it!" I hissed at Thorne, drawing the pistol from my waistband. My hands were shaking so badly I could barely grip the handle. "Hit send, Marcus!"
"It's a massive file!" Thorne typed frantically, his fingers flying across the keyboard. "I'm pushing it to a secure cloud server and mass-emailing the link to every major news outlet and federal agency in the country. Just give me thirty seconds!"
The slow, deliberate crunch of glass under boots told me we didn't have thirty seconds.
I peeked around the edge of the desk. Driver88 was walking down the center aisle of cubicles, sweeping the rifle side to side. He was fifty feet away.
"Mrs. Harper," he called out, his voice infuriatingly calm. "I admire your tenacity. I really do. But it ends here. You die, and I scrub the servers."
"Ten seconds!" Thorne whispered, sweating profusely.
I had to buy him time. I stood up from behind the desk, raising the pistol.
The hitman instantly snapped his rifle toward me.
"Wait!" I screamed.
He paused, his finger resting on the trigger, waiting for me to surrender.
"You asked me on my blog why Melissa took the plea," I shouted, my voice carrying over the hum of the servers. "You asked me to think about the driver's seat."
"I did," he replied, taking a slow step closer. "Because I wanted you to know that the boogeyman is real. And he's standing right in front of you."
"You made one mistake," I said, a grim, terrifying smile spreading across my face.
"And what's that?"
"Send it!" Thorne yelled from the floor.
I heard the heavy ping of the email client sending the blast.
"You let me get to a computer," I said, locking eyes with the man who murdered my husband. "The files are gone. Every federal agent in Washington DC is reading your payroll right now. You’re a ghost who just got broadcast in high definition."
The hitman froze. He glanced at Thorne’s monitor, realizing he was too late. The absolute destruction of his syndicate had just been executed with a keystroke.
In that moment of distraction, the elevator doors at the end of the hall pinged open. A tactical squad from the Denver Police Department—called in by the security guard downstairs—flooded the floor, assault rifles raised.
"Drop the weapon! Drop it now!" the lead officer bellowed.
Driver88 looked at the police, then at me. He knew it was over. He lowered his rifle, raising his hands in surrender, fading back into just a man in a black suit.
I lowered my pistol, my knees finally giving out as I slid down the side of Thorne's desk.
The war was over. The real war.
It’s been three weeks since the data dump. The fallout was catastrophic. Politicians resigned. Arrests swept the city. Evelyn’s financial backers were dismantled by the FBI.
Melissa is still in prison, but with the new evidence, Maya is filing an appeal. I don't know if I can ever forgive her, but I know she isn't a murderer. She was just another victim of Evelyn's toxic, destructive gravity.
Lily and I have moved. We left the single-story house behind and bought a cabin in the mountains, surrounded by pine trees and quiet skies. The trust is safe. We are safe.

I’m retiring this blog today. The story is told. The poison is drained. I am no longer a victim, and I am no longer the executioner. I am just a mother, watching her daughter paint a picture of a brave dinosaur in the morning light.
But I have to ask: to everyone who followed this nightmare, to everyone who watched my family tear itself apart in the name of greed and survival... when the monsters in your own life finally show their true faces, what lengths will you go to protect the ones you love?
