The entrance to the underground core was entirely invisible from the surface, hidden beneath a massive, automated hydraulic platform disguised as an abandoned mineral mining station. "They built the lock for people who use tools," Ethan said, a faint, calculating smile touching his lips. He pressed the sensor against the vault door's steel casing, connecting the output directly to his smartwatch.
"Atlas," Ethan whispered into his wrist link. "Listen to the internal mechanical tumbler rotations. Map the acoustic alignment."
"Analyzing acoustic feedback data now, Ethan," Atlas’s voice responded directly within his ear canal, crisp and perfectly clear despite the depth. "Can we extract the clean patents before the wipe, Atlas?" Maya asked, her fingers rapidly configuring the transfer filters on her tablet. "The open-source community could use those designs to accelerate the Horizon rollout by a decade."
"Extraction protocols initiated," Atlas confirmed. "I am routing all uncorrupted scientific, agricultural, and technological patent files directly into our secure, decentralized open-source cloud array. However, the system's automated defensive firmware has detected the data extraction. It has triggered a localized, un-wipeable thermal self-destruct sequence inside the server cores."
Suddenly, the silent, amber lights of the server racks shifted into a violent, flashing crimson. A sharp, mechanical siren began to wail through the subterranean vault, and the sound of industrial cooling fans cutting out filled the room with an ominous, rising heat.
"The thermal load will destroy the data cores in less than four minutes," Maya warned, her eyes wide as she monitored the climbing temperature gauges. "We need to complete the extraction and get out before the electrical systems suffer a catastrophic arc-flash explosion."
"Hold your ground, Maya," Ethan said, his hand resting firmly on the central console, entirely unmoved by the chaos of sirens and rising heat. "Trust the processing speed. Atlas, prioritize the agricultural and water-purification files. Let the corporate financial histories burn."
"Extraction at eighty-two percent... eighty-nine percent..." Atlas reported calmly, his voice remaining unyielding against the blaring sirens. "All clean patent data has been successfully extracted and permanently mirrored across the global Horizon network."
"Now, Atlas," Ethan commanded. "Wipe the core firmware. Leave absolutely nothing behind."
