Chapter 2: The Fire of Reckoning

The revelation hung in the air like a lethal gas. Eleanor’s hands, still poised in the air from the slap she had delivered moments ago, began to tremble violently. The high-society guests stood frozen, their eyes darting between the distraught nanny holding the child, the pale face of the wealthy wife, and Richard, whose aristocratic composure was visibly disintegrating into raw fury.

"Richard, darling, she is insane!" Eleanor’s voice pitched high, cracking under the weight of panic. She tried to step toward her husband, her diamond heels clicking sharply on the marble. "She’s a disgruntled former employee—a lunatic trying to extort us on our son's birthday! You know how clinics are, the paperwork is entirely legal!"

"Legal?" The nanny, Clara, spoke up, her voice cracking but laced with a fierce, maternal strength she had suppressed for seven long years. She didn't back down this time. "It was legal because your thugs stood over my hospital bed while I was still bleeding, Eleanor! You told me if I didn't sign the relinquishment forms under a fake name, my younger brother would never walk out of prison alive. You used your family’s judges to forge my compliance!"

Richard didn't look at his wife. He looked down at Ethan, who was still burying his face inside Clara’s neck, whimpering, "Don't let her take me back to the dark room, Mommy..."

That single word—dark room—made Richard’s blood run cold. He remembered the times Eleanor insisted on "disciplining" the boy behind closed doors in the west wing, areas where the staff were strictly forbidden to enter.

"Richard..." Eleanor reached for his arm, her eyes wide with desperate pleading.

"Don't touch me," Richard siseed. The sheer coldness in his voice made the entire ballroom take a collective step back. He turned his gaze slowly toward the entrance of the ballroom, where the estate's private security detail stood frozen. "Clear the room. Every single person. Now."

The exodus was frantic. The powerful, wealthy elite of Andalusia—people who had spent the evening praising Eleanor’s grace—fled the mansion, leaving behind a battlefield of popped balloons, half-eaten cake, and the shattered illusion of a perfect family. Within minutes, the grand doors slammed shut, locking the remaining players inside a tense, heavy silence.
