Chapter 10 - THE GALAS OF VIPERS

Z
The Monona Terrace Convention Center glowed like a glass palace against the dark, reflective waters of Lake Monona. Crystal chandeliers cast warm light over hundreds of Madison’s most powerful figures—politicians, real estate tycoons, university donors, and media moguls, all dressed in formal black-tie attire.
I stepped out of the black town car onto the red carpet.
I wore a floor-length, backless gown of deep crimson silk that draped elegantly over my tall frame. My auburn hair was styled to perfection, and around my neck hung a striking diamond choker that drew subtle attention to the faint, silver line running down my left cheek. I looked regal, dangerous, and utterly immune to intimidation.
Beside me, Arthur wore an immaculate tuxedo, looking like a titan of the legal world. Marcus was positioned near the entrance, maintaining encrypted radio communication with two private security officers stationed inside the hall.
As we walked through the grand glass doors, head after head turned in our direction. Whispers rippled through the crowd like wildfire.
"Is that Dr. Clara? The one who took down Julian Vance?"
"Look at her... she looks incredible."
"I heard she just landed a three-million-dollar grant for her center."
I ignored the hushed commentary, walking with calm, calculated grace through the sea of tuxedoes and evening gowns. My eyes were fixed on the raised VIP dais at the far end of the ballroom.
Standing at the center of a group of wealthy donors was Senator Thomas Vance.
He was a man in his late fifties, with silver hair, a sun-kissed tan, and a smile that looked like it had been manufactured in a political laboratory. He held a glass of champagne, laughing charismatically with a state supreme court justice.
As if sensing a shift in the atmosphere, Senator Vance slowly turned his head. His eyes locked onto mine across the crowded room.
The manufactured smile vanished instantly. His posture went rigid.
I gave him a single, slow, icy nod of recognition, then picked up a flute of sparkling water from a passing waiter's tray, taking a deliberate sip.
"He sees you," Arthur whispered beside me, his eyes scanning the perimeter for Vance’s security detail.
"Good," I replied smoothly. "Let him sweat."
Ten minutes later, as Arthur engaged a university trustee in conversation, I walked toward the quieter balcony overlooking the lake. The cool night air felt refreshing against my skin.
The heavy glass door behind me slid open and shut with a soft click.
"Dr. Clara," a deep, polished voice said from the shadows.
I turned around slowly, leaning my back against the stone balustrade.
Senator Thomas Vance stepped into the moonlight, his hands tucked casually into his tuxedo pockets. Two burly men in dark suits stood near the balcony doors, blocking my only exit.
"Senator Vance," I said calmly, setting my glass down on the stone ledge. "I was wondering when you'd build up the courage to speak to me without hiding behind Julian or Eleanor."
Thomas Vance chuckled, a dry, cold sound that held no warmth whatsoever. "You are remarkably arrogant for a woman who barely escaped my nephew’s kitchen with her life, Clara."
"I didn't escape, Senator," I corrected, stepping forward into the moonlight, letting him see the faint scar on my face. "I conquered. Your nephew is going to prison for eight years. Your sister is bankrupt and disgraced. And you... you are standing on the edge of a precipice."
Thomas’s jaw tightened, the polished politician facade dropping completely to reveal the ruthless criminal underneath. "You think a couple of leaked spreadsheets from an anonymous source give you leverage over me? I control the state judiciary, Clara. I control the federal prosecutors in this district. You are a sociology professor playing with dynamite."
"I am not playing with spreadsheets, Thomas," I said, dropping the formal title, my voice slicing through the cold night air like a scalpel. "I am holding the encrypted video file recorded from the hidden camera inside Julian's apartment."
Thomas froze. The color slowly drained from his face, his silver eyebrows pulling together in a sharp knot of genuine terror.
"I have your voice," I continued softly, taking a step closer to him, forcing him to look me in the eye. "I have you explicitly ordering my assault and destruction to cover up the Helios Holdings money laundering scheme. The file is currently uploading to a secure server at the Department of Justice in D.C."
"You're bluffing," Thomas hissed, though his trembling hands betrayed his panic.
"Try me," I challenged, leaning in close so only he could hear my next words. "Step up to that podium tonight. Deliver your campaign speech about family values and law and order. Because the moment you finish speaking, the federal indictment will be unsealed, and the press corps in that room will receive the video link."
Thomas stared at me, his breathing ragged, looking at me not as a victim, but as the executioner of his life's work.
"What do you want?" he choked out, his voice cracking with desperation.
"I want you to walk up to that podium tonight," I said, my voice cold as liquid steel. "And I want you to announce your immediate resignation from the Senate and your total withdrawal from public life, citing severe health issues. And then, you will turn yourself in to the federal authorities without a fight."
"And if I refuse?" Thomas spat, his eyes flashing with a final, desperate burst of venom.
May you like
I smiled—a sharp, lethal smile that made the powerful politician shrink back an inch.
"Then I will make sure the video plays on the big screens behind you during your speech."
