Chapter 15 - The Zurich Connection

By the following morning, the resources of Vale Capital had ripped through the corporate secrecy of the Swiss
banking district like a hurricane. When Elias Vale demanded information from an affiliate bank, people complied—
not out of respect, but out of fear of economic annihilation. His European legal team had secured a deposition from
the compliance director of the Zurich brokerage firm that had handled the seven hundred thousand dollar transfer.
I sat at the conference table in our home study, the laptop screen displaying a live video link to our lead
attorney in Switzerland, Hans Richter. The time difference meant it was mid-afternoon in Zurich, the grey
European light reflecting off the glass windows behind him.
“Ms. Mercer, Mr. Vale,” Hans said, his voice crisp and clear over the encrypted connection. “We have obtained
the physical transaction log from the broker. The person who delivered the bearer bonds did not go by the name of
Eleanor Mercer. She used a passport under the name of Clara Vance.”
My breath caught in my throat. I stared at the screen, unable to process the words. “Clara? My father’s
assistant? The woman who brought me the leather briefcase five years ago?”
“Yes,” Hans replied, adjusting his glasses as he looked down at a document on his desk. “The power of
attorney attached to the bearer bonds was signed by Eleanor Vance-Mercer, but the physical delivery and the
execution orders were handled exclusively by Clara Vance. According to the broker’s statement, Ms. Vance claimed
she was acting as the sole trustee for an estate liquidation.”
I leaned back in my chair, my mind racing through the events of the last five years. Clara had been the one who
handed me the evidence that destroyed my father and brother. She had been hired as the operations director for the
campus legal center. She had been standing beside me at the groundbreaking ceremony, wearing a yellow hard hat,
smiling as the first excavator broke the ground. She had been inside our inner circle the entire time.
“She didn't bring me that briefcase to help me,” I whispered, the betrayal cutting through me like a physical
blade. “She brought it to ensure that my father and Grant were completely destroyed, removing them from the
board so she and Mother could take the remaining assets without interference. She wasn't my father’s victim—she
was my mother’s partner.”
Elias stood behind me, his hands resting heavily on my shoulders. His grip tightened, his presence a solid,
unwavering anchor in the sudden storm of deceit. “Marcus,” he called out into the room. The security chief stepped
forward instantly from the corner. “Where is Clara Vance right now?”
“She’s at the legal advocacy center on campus, Mr. Vale,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a professional
chill. “She arrived at her office at 8:00 a.m. She’s currently scheduled for a staff meeting in twenty minutes.”
“Cancel the meeting,” Elias commanded, looking down at me, his eyes dark with an ancient, predatory anger.
“We are going to the campus. It’s time to see what our director of operations has been doing with our records.”
“Wait,” I said, standing up and closing the laptop. I looked at Elias, my face pale but my expression entirely
set. “If we storm into her office with security, she’ll know we’ve found the Zurich link. She’ll alert my mother, and
the remaining bearer bonds will vanish into another shell network. We need her to think the plan is working. We
need her to execute the second transfer so the federal marshals can catch her red-handed in the act of financial
sabotage.”
Elias studied my face for a long moment, assessing my resolve. He reached out, his long fingers gently
brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “It’s dangerous, Claire. She’s been sitting next to our son’s sanctuary
for five years. She has access to the internal network keys.”
“I designed that network, Elias,” I said, my voice dropping into a quiet, absolute certainty. “She has access to

what I allowed her to see. If she wants to launder my mother’s dirty money through my son’s foundation, I’m going
to make sure the trap closes so tight she won’t even have room to breathe.”
