Chapter 7: The Unraveling Mind

When Olivia regained consciousness, her head felt as though it were being split open by an axe. A dull, rhythmic throbbing beat behind her eyes, and her mouth tasted distinctly of copper and dirt.

She tried to move her arms, but a sharp pain in her wrists stopped her. She was tied securely to a rusted metal chair, her hands bound behind her back with thick, abrasive zip-ties that bit into her skin with every twitch. The air was freezing, thick with the stagnant stench of river water, old mold, and spilled gasoline.

A single, bare halogen bulb swung from a frayed cord overhead, casting long, erratic shadows across the cracked concrete floor. An abandoned warehouse.

"You're finally awake."

The voice came from the shadows just outside the circle of light. It was a voice that had haunted her dreams for two hundred and forty days, but it sounded altered—distorted by a frantic, breathless cadence.

Aaron stepped into the light. Olivia’s breath hitched.

He looked terrible. The man who had once prided himself on sharp suits and manicured hair was gone. His eyes were bloodshot, surrounded by dark, hollow bruises of exhaustion. His face was gaunt, his jaw covered in a patchy, neglected stubble. He was wearing a stained jacket, his fingers twitching rhythmically against his thighs. His mind was entirely uncoupling from reality.

"Aaron," Olivia managed to croak out, her throat dry. "Please."

"You ruined everything, Olivia!" he shouted suddenly, the outburst echoing violently off the corrugated iron walls. He began to pace, his boots clicking erratically against the concrete. "We had a plan. We were supposed to be together. I built a life for us in my head! And you... you brought him into it."

"I didn't bring anyone," she pleaded, trying to keep her voice steady despite the terror threatening to choke her. "Aaron, you need help. Look at yourself."

Aaron stopped pacing and let out a laugh—a high, fractured sound that sent a shiver down her spine. He stepped closer, leaning down until his face was inches from hers. His breath smelled of stale coffee and panic.

"What do I want?" he whispered, repeating a question she hadn't even fully formed. "I want you, Olivia. I've always just wanted you. Why couldn't you just see that? Why did you make me do all of this?"

Tears welled in his bloodshot eyes, spilling over his gaunt cheeks. The sight was infinitely more terrifying than his anger. A furious man could be reasoned with or outmaneuvered, but an irrational, unhinged man recognized no boundaries, no logic, and no consequences. He had left the rational world behind the moment he pushed her into that van, and Olivia knew, with absolute certainty, that he had no intention of letting either of them leave this room alive.
