Zero nine

Chapter 1

Maya gently gathered sections of the stained silk.

She folded...

Pinned...

Cut...

Twisted...

Layer by layer, she transformed the ruined gown into something no one expected.

The wine stains became deep crimson floral accents flowing naturally through the ivory fabric.

The torn lower panels became elegant asymmetrical draping.

The damaged train became sculptural folds that looked intentional.

Twenty minutes later...

No one remembered what the original dress had looked like.

Because this version was breathtaking.

Photographers erupted into applause before they realized they were supposed to be taking pictures.

Fashion editors rushed forward.

Someone whispered,

"It's even better."

Another simply said,

"My God..."

Isabella stared at herself in the mirror.

Tears filled her eyes.

"I've never worn anything this beautiful."

Then she turned toward Maya.

"Who are you?"

For the first time that evening, Maya looked directly at the crowd.

"My name is Maya Brooks."

"I graduated first in my class from Parsons School of Design."

The ballroom froze.

"My mother became sick during my final year."

"I left fashion to care for her."

"When she passed away..."

"I couldn't afford another chance."

"So I accepted the only job I could find."

Silence filled the room.

Regina slowly stepped backward.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The sketches.

The sewing kit.

The confidence.

The quiet dignity.

She hadn't been humiliating a janitor.

She had been humiliating a gifted designer.

Isabella removed the microphone from a nearby reporter.

"I have an announcement."

Every camera turned toward her.

"The dress I'm wearing tonight..."

"...was saved by Maya Brooks."

"And from this moment forward..."

"I refuse to wear anything designed by Hartwell Couture unless Maya is part of the creative team."

The ballroom exploded with applause.

Investors began whispering.

Magazine editors rushed toward Maya instead of Regina.

Several luxury brands immediately asked for Maya's business card.

Regina watched helplessly as years of carefully built authority disappeared in a matter of minutes.

The company's chairman approached quietly.

"Regina."

She turned hopefully.

Instead, he held out an envelope.

"I've accepted your resignation."

Her face drained of color.

"You can't be serious."

"I am."

"You destroyed the reputation of this company before the cameras ever did."

Regina looked around the ballroom.

No one came to defend her.

No one even looked at her.

For years she had demanded respect through fear.

Now she discovered fear never creates loyalty.

Only silence.

The chairman turned toward Maya.

"If you'll accept..."

"I'd like to offer you the position of Lead Designer."

Maya smiled politely.

"Thank you."

"But I'd rather build something of my own."

Six months later, Maya launched Brooks Atelier.

Her debut collection sold out in less than forty-eight hours.

The gown she rescued that night became the centerpiece of a museum exhibition titled Beauty Born from Disaster.

Fashion magazines called it the dress that changed an industry.

But Maya never displayed the recreated gown in her studio.

Instead, she framed something else.

The torn pages of her old sketchbook.

She left every rip exactly as Regina had made it.

Because every time someone asked why she kept them, Maya would smile and say,

"People can destroy your paper."

May you like

"They can never destroy your talent."

And that was the lesson the entire fashion world remembered long after the gala lights went dark.
