CHAPTER 2: THE SHATTERED TRUTH

Nolan’s declaration caught Richard completely off guard. He stared at his only son—the boy he had painstakingly groomed to inherit his financial empire—with utter disbelief. Then, Richard let out a dry, humorless bark of a laugh.

"You want to leave?" Richard sneered, leaning in. "You step past that door, and you are no longer a trust-fund kid. No more elite private schools, no maids, no designer clothes, and no pre-packaged future. You’re willing to flush all of that down the toilet just to go be a vagrant in a thunderstorm with a penniless old woman?"

Terrified, the grandmother desperately tried to pry Nolan's fingers off her hand. "Nolan, please listen to your father... go back inside. Don't ruin your entire life because of me..."

"I don't want a future in this freezing house!" Nolan screamed, his tears finally boiling over into raw fury. With his free hand, he reached deep into his hoodie pocket, pulled out an old glass medicine vial with a half-torn warning label, and slammed it onto the marble floor. The vial spun across the sleek stone, clicking softly as it stopped right at the toe of Richard’s leather shoe.

"You keep saying Grandma betrayed the family? Or are you just terrified she’s going to expose what you actually did to Mom?!"

The mansion fell into a dead, suffocating silence. Even the thunder outside seemed to mute itself behind the thick walls. Richard’s face flushed from angry red to a sickly, pale grey. His pupils dilated the second he recognized the vial.

"Nolan... how did you..."

"I found it locked in the safe in your home office!" Nolan choked out, his entire body shaking. "You always told me Mom died of severe depression, that she just jumped into the river behind the house. But this is a high-dose, black-market sedative that causes severe hallucinations—a banned drug that you secretly forced her to take every single day! Grandma found Mom’s real medical file, and that's why you framed her for stealing company secrets just to kick her out, isn't it?!"

The grandmother stared at the vial on the floor, and then slowly looked up at her son-in-law with pure horror. The eight years of agonizing grief over her daughter’s death hadn't been a tragedy—it had been a perfectly covered-up murder, executed by the monster standing in front of her.

Richard took a panicked step back, his polished, gentlemanly mask completely disintegrating. He lunged forward to grab the vial, but Nolan was already faster. The boy grabbed his grandmother’s arm and marched her past the suitcase, straight out into the roaring wind and rain of the open foyer.

Nolan stopped at the edge of the downpour, turning back to look at the man frozen in the middle of the grand hall. "You always said you did everything for the family. But you only ever loved yourself and your dirty money. I’d rather freeze out in the rain with someone who actually loves me than live in luxury with a murderer."

The boy looked up at his grandmother, a warm, reassuring smile breaking through his tears. "Let’s go, Grandma. The cops are already waiting down at the gate. I emailed them the audio files of Mom’s real medical records an hour ago."

Hand in hand, the old woman and the little boy stepped out into the blinding white curtain of the night storm. Behind them, the heavy automated front doors slowly clicked shut, trapping Richard inside the massive golden cage he had built for himself, while the echoes of approaching police sirens began to bounce off the glass walls.
