Chapter 4

Part 4: The Price of Silence

The next morning brought no peace, only the cold reality of a war that had just begun. Elena—the woman in the emerald green dress—did not go quietly. By 8:00 AM, the family attorney, Don Eusebio, arrived at the mansion, his expression grim as he carried a leather briefcase.

Alejandro met him in the study. Lucia stood by the window, holding Sofia tightly against her chest, watching the rain beat against the glass.

"Alejandro," Don Eusebio began, adjusting his spectacles. "Doña Elena has already contacted me. She is threatening to file a massive defamation lawsuit, and she reminds you that according to the current structure of the Valcárcel Foundation, she holds the primary voting shares. If you attempt to alter Sofia's custody status or bring Lucia into this household legally, she will liquidate the company assets."

Alejandro let out a cold, humorless laugh. He stood up, walking slowly toward the old lawyer. "Let her try."

"You don't understand the financial ruin—" Eusebio started.

"No, you don't understand," Alejandro interrupted, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Last night, after Elena was thrown out, I went into her private office. I broke the lock on her filing cabinet. I didn't just find the forged payout documents she used to fake Lucia's abandonment. I found the financial ledgers. Elena hasn't just been cruel, Eusebio. She’s been embezzling from the foundation for a decade."

The attorney froze, the color draining from his face.

Alejandro turned to look at Lucia and Sofia. The contrast was striking—the innocent child who possessed his eyes, and the resilient woman who had survived hell just to watch over her. The fear was gone from Lucia’s posture; she looked back at Alejandro with a quiet, fierce solidarity.

"Tell Elena that she has two choices," Alejandro commanded, turning back to the lawyer. "She can sign over all her shares, sign a full confession of her fraud, and legally renounce any claim or contact with this family. Or, by noon, the Guardia Civil will be executing a warrant for her arrest for human trafficking, extortion, and grand larceny."

Don Eusebio swallowed hard, realizing the empire Elena had built on a foundation of cruelty was collapsing in seconds. He nodded curtly, packed his papers, and left without another word.

When the heavy oak doors shut, the silence in the room changed. It was no longer the heavy silence of oppression. It was the quiet before a new dawn.

Sofia looked up at Lucia, her little hand reaching up to touch her mother's cheek. "Mommy? Are you still staying?"

May you like

Lucia dropped to her knees, pulling both Alejandro and Sofia into a tight, unbreakable embrace. For the first time in five years, her voice didn't shake.

"Yes, my love," Lucia whispered into her daughter's hair, her eyes meeting Alejandro's steady, devoted gaze. "We are never going back into the dark."
