Chapter 10 - Ashes of the Empire

The wind swept over the snow-dusted peak of the Swiss Alps, howling around the glass-and-steel monolith hanging off the cliffside. It was three months after the call in Chicago. The retreat in St. Moritz was a fortress of silent, blinding luxury—and the war room of a reborn shadow empire.

Inside the climate-controlled glass pavilion, the air was warm, smelling of dark roasted espresso and expensive leather. Dominic stood before a wall of holographic tactical displays, his hands clasped behind his back. The blue light cast sharp angles across his jaw, highlighting the dark circles beneath his eyes. He hadn't slept more than three hours a night since the satellite ping in October.

I walked into the pavilion softly, my footsteps silent on the thick wool rug. I wore a high-collared black cashmere sweater, the diamond ring on my left hand reflecting the harsh light of the mountain snow outside. In my right hand, I carried a secure datapadd containing the latest intelligence sweep from Mercer Global’s Zurich office.

"Interpol traced the signal routing," I said, my voice steady, cutting through the low hum of the servers. "The call to Chicago didn't come from Eastern Europe. It was bounced through a blind node in Singapore, but the original point of origin was a private server in Geneva."

Dominic didn't turn around immediately. He stared at a live satellite feed showing a heavily fortified estate nestled in the pine forests outside Geneva.

"Eleanor's secondary bank account," Dominic said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "She didn't just leave money behind when she went into that vault in Boston. She left a contingency asset portfolio valued at four billion dollars."

"And Elias has full access to it," I finished, stepping up beside him.

On the screen, thermal imaging picked up movement within the perimeter of the Geneva estate. Dozens of heavily armed guards, automated drone turrets, and armored transport vehicles were actively preparing for something massive.

"He's not building a strike team to come after us, Amelia," Dominic said, turning to look at me, his dark eyes burning with that familiar, intense strategic clarity. "He knows I've turned Mercer Global into an active military intelligence network. If he comes for us directly, he loses. He's building a distraction."

"What kind of distraction?" I asked, my grip tightening on the datapadd.

Dominic tapped the glass screen, zooming in on an encrypted manifest tied to a Liberian-flagged cargo ship currently docked in the port of Rotterdam.

"A dirty bomb," Dominic said bluntly. "Not nuclear—chemical. A concentrated strain of the neurotoxin Vance Dynamics was synthesizing ten years ago under your father’s contract with the Department of Defense. Elias managed to extract the chemical precursor formulas from the server logs before you smashed the optical core."

A cold pit opened in my stomach. "Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe. If he releases a neurotoxin there..."

"It will paralyze global supply chains for six months and kill fifty thousand people in the first hour," Dominic said. "Market panic, economic collapse, immediate declaration of international emergency. While the world is looking at Western Europe burning, Elias will quietly slip into the global banking clearinghouses and siphon three trillion dollars out of sovereign wealth funds."

"He's fulfilling my mother's plan," I whispered, the sickening truth settling in. "She didn't care about the ideal of changing the world. She wanted to own the wreckage."

Dominic stepped closer, his large, warm hand cupping the back of my head, gently pulling my forehead to meet his. "We aren't going to let him turn the world into wreckage, Amelia."

"Caleb is safe in the underground bunker with the Swiss guard team?" I asked.

"Yes," Dominic answered. "Two dozen of my best operatives are guarding him. He’s completely off the grid."

He released me, walking over to a steel case resting on the central table. He unlatched the heavy brass clips, opening the lid to reveal two matching matte-black tactical sidearms, custom-fitted body armor, and encrypted comms earpieces.

"You don't have to do this," Dominic said, looking at me with a profound, quiet gravity. "You can stay here with Caleb. You've given enough blood to this fight."

I reached into the case, pulling out the custom tactical vest and slipping it over my head, cinching the side straps with practiced, ruthless precision.

"My brother started this nightmare eight years ago when he set our home on fire," I said, my eyes locking onto Dominic's with a cold, unstoppable determination. "And my family's legacy ends in Rotterdam tonight. We do this together, Dominic. To the very end."

Dominic stared at me, a proud, ferocious smile touching the corner of his mouth. He picked up his own sidearm, chambered a round, and clicked the safety into place.

"To the end," Dominic agreed.

Thirty minutes later, the Mercer Global private stealth jet roared off the snow-covered runway of the St. Moritz airfield, cutting through the storm clouds toward the lowlands of the Netherlands. The final assault had begun.
