Chapter 11 - BLOOD AND BOARDROOMS

The main lobby of the Bennett Tower was a cathedral of glass and steel, an architectural marvel that spoke of untouchable power. Today, it was a battleground. Hundreds of reporters, photographers, and news anchors were packed behind velvet ropes, the flash of their cameras creating a blinding, continuous lightning storm. The noise was deafening, a cacophony of shouted questions and buzzing speculation.
I stood in the wings behind a massive marble pillar, out of sight of the cameras, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. Beside me stood Mia, her arms crossed tightly over her chest, chewing nervously on her bottom lip. She had refused to stay upstairs, insisting that if her life was being dissected, she was going to witness the autopsy.
At exactly noon, the heavy mahogany doors of the executive elevator opened. The chaotic roar of the lobby instantly died down into a breathless, expectant hush.
Daniel Bennett wheeled himself onto the raised platform. He was alone. No PR managers, no lawyers flanking him. He navigated the chair to the center of the stage with a precise, powerful grace that demanded absolute silence and respect. He adjusted the microphone, his face carved from ice, his blue eyes sweeping over the sea of reporters like a hawk assessing prey.
"Good afternoon," Daniel’s voice boomed through the speakers, deep, resonant, and dripping with an authority that sent shivers down my spine. "For the past twenty-four hours, my mother, Eleanor Bennett, has orchestrated a vicious, fabricated smear campaign against a woman of impeccable character, and against my nineteen-year-old daughter."
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps. The confirmation of the heir from the billionaire's own mouth was the golden ticket they had been waiting for. The camera flashes doubled in intensity.
"Let me be unequivocally clear," Daniel continued, his voice rising, slicing through the noise. "Sarah Callahan is not an extortionist. She is the victim of a monstrous, two-decade-long conspiracy. Twenty years ago, I intended to marry her. On the night I was meant to propose, I was involved in a near-fatal car accident that left me paralyzed."
He paused, letting the weight of the tragedy sink into the silent room. Even the most cynical reporters lowered their notepads, captivated by the raw, unscripted truth pouring from a man notoriously guarded about his past.
"While I was in a coma," Daniel’s voice grew lethal, laced with a venom directed entirely at his mother, "Eleanor Bennett intercepted my fiancé's desperate pleas for help. She forced a pregnant, nineteen-year-old girl onto the streets. And when I woke up, my mother handed me a forged investigative report claiming Sarah had abandoned me. She stole my family to protect her corporate interests."
Pandemonium erupted. Reporters shouted over one another, frantic for details.
"Mr. Bennett! Are you pursuing legal action against your mother?"
"Is it true you've seized control of the board?"
Daniel raised a hand, and the room instantly silenced again. The power he commanded was absolute.
"Effective immediately, Eleanor Bennett has been permanently removed from the board of directors," Daniel announced coldly. "Furthermore, my legal team has submitted evidence to the District Attorney's office proving her involvement in fraud, forgery, and the illegal misappropriation of trust funds used to silence those who knew the truth. She is no longer part of this company. She is no longer part of my family."
I watched Mia out of the corner of my eye. Her rigid posture had softened. She was staring at Daniel, watching him publicly bleed for us, watching him wield his massive power not as a weapon to control her, but as a shield to defend her honor.
Suddenly, a disturbance rippled through the back of the lobby. The crowd parted like the Red Sea, and murmurs of shock swept through the room. Striding down the center aisle, flanked by her own massive security detail, was Eleanor Bennett.
She looked furious, a cornered lioness preparing to strike. She marched right up to the edge of the platform, ignoring the flashing cameras, her eyes locked entirely on her son.
"You foolish, arrogant boy," Eleanor hissed, her voice caught by the microphones and amplified across the lobby. "You think you can destroy me in front of the world? I built this empire while you learned how to use a wheelchair! You have no proof of these absurd allegations!"
Daniel didn't flinch. He looked down at her from the stage, his expression one of supreme, chilling pity.
"Check your phone, Mother," Daniel said softly, though the microphone carried the lethal words to everyone.
Eleanor frowned, but before she could move, one of her lawyers pushed through the crowd, looking panicked, holding up a tablet. Eleanor snatched it. I couldn't see the screen, but I saw the exact moment her world collapsed. All the color drained from her perfectly contoured face. Her hands began to shake violently.
"The 'Lucifer' files," Daniel announced to the silent room. "Every offshore transaction, every bribe paid to the private investigator twenty years ago, every forged document bearing your signature. All of it was just released simultaneously to the SEC, the FBI, and every major news outlet in this room."
Eleanor looked up at him, absolute terror finally breaking her icy facade. "Daniel... please. You can't do this. I am your mother."

"You were a CEO," Daniel corrected ruthlessly. "And you are officially bankrupt. Security, escort this woman out of my building."
As the guards moved in to surround a trembling, defeated Eleanor Bennett, the cameras caught every second of the spectacular fall of a titan. I looked at Daniel, breathless. He had done it. He had burned the witch, and he had done it all for us.
