Zero nine

Chapter 11 - The Unraveling Z

By 4:00 AM, the estate was crawling with federal agents, crime scene investigators, and tactical units. Victoria Sterling’s arrest sent shockwaves through the highest corridors of international finance. As the head of Sovereign Investment Group, her detention triggered an immediate freeze on billions of dollars in offshore accounts, exposing a massive global web of political corruption, corporate espionage, and contract killings.

Upstairs in the nursery, the girls were finally asleep again, completely unaware of the violent confrontation that had taken place on the floor below. Clara sat on the edge of Avery’s bed, gently stroking her hair until her breathing became slow and steady.

I stood at the doorway, watching the woman who had transformed from a quiet, soft-spoken nanny into a fierce protector who had faced down an international assassin to save my life.

"They're going to sleep through the rest of the night," Clara whispered, stepping quietly out into the hallway and pulling the door shut until it clicked softly.

"How are you holding up?" I asked, walking beside her toward the balcony overlooking the rear estate grounds.

"I should be terrified," Clara admitted, leaning against the marble railing as the first light of dawn began to paint the horizon in shades of pink and gold. "Six months ago, I was just a nanny trying to make sure two little girls felt loved after losing their mother. Tonight, I hit an international crime boss over the head with a horse statue."

A soft laugh escaped my lips—the first genuine laugh I had felt in hours. "Your form was incredible, by the way. Very effective."

Clara smiled, though her expression grew thoughtful as she looked out over the gardens. "It made me realize something, Ethan."

"What's that?"

"I was running too," she said softly, looking up at me. "When I took this job, I was running from my own past. From a family that treated me like a convenience, from relationships where I felt completely invisible. I thought if I hid in a big house and took care of someone else’s children, I wouldn't have to face my own life."

I stepped closer to her, the morning breeze pulling at her dark hair. "And now?"

"Now I don't want to hide anymore," Clara said, her brown eyes locking onto mine with absolute clarity. "I don't want to be an employee who steps back into the shadows when the danger is over. I care about Sophie and Avery... and I care about you, Ethan."

My heart pounded against my chest—not from fear or adrenaline, but from an overwhelming, undeniable emotion that had been building inside me for months. I reached out, gently framing her jaw with my hands.

"You're not an employee, Clara," I said, my voice thick with emotion. "You never were. You brought light back into a house that was dead. You gave my children their childhood back, and you gave me back my soul. You are the only person who ever told me the truth when everyone else was telling me what I wanted to hear."

Clara leaned into my touch, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "Ethan..."

I didn't let her finish. I bent down and pressed my lips against hers.

The kiss was sweet, deep, and filled with months of unspoken devotion, shared trauma, and rising hope. Clara wrapped her arms around my waist, pulling herself close against me as the sun broke over the horizon, bathing us both in warm, golden light.

When we finally parted, she rested her forehead against mine, a soft, breathless smile on her lips.

"So," she whispered playfully. "Does this mean I get a raise?"

I laughed, wrapping my arms around her tight. "It means you never have to work for a paycheck a day in your life again... unless you want to."
