Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The 50th floor of the Sterling Tower in Manhattan was dead silent when the elevator doors slid open. Outside the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, the city was blanketed in a cold November drizzle. Inside, the mahogany conference table was surrounded by twelve members of the board of directors, their faces pale and anxious as they stared at the towering figure of Julian Vance standing at the head of the room.

Julian was a silver-haired predator in a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit, radiating the cold confidence of an assassin who believed his target was already buried six feet under.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Julian’s deep voice resonated through the boardroom, smooth and entirely devoid of remorse. “We all mourn the tragic, unconfirmed reports coming out of the Caribbean regarding Arthur Sterling’s daughter. But the markets do not wait for grief. Sterling Global stock has plummeted twenty-two percent this morning. Arthur is completely unreachable, paralyzed by personal catastrophe. As the primary stakeholder holding forty-one percent of institutional equity through Vanguard Horizon, I am calling for an immediate emergency vote to replace executive leadership and initiate an orderly restructuring.”

“Arthur hasn’t officially stepped down, Julian,” protested Marcus Hayes, the oldest board member and my father’s lifelong confidant. “We cannot execute a hostile takeover while the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing!”

“The maritime reports indicate zero survivors from the yacht’s aft section,” Julian lied effortlessly, adjusting his platinum watch. “Arthur is finished. He will never return to this boardroom. You either vote to confirm Vanguard’s stewardship right now, or this entire institution collapses into bankruptcy before the closing bell.”

I stepped through the double oak doors, the sharp click of my Christian Louboutin heels cutting through the tension like a switchblade.

“I wouldn’t cast that vote just yet, Julian.”

The entire room froze. Julian Vance’s head snapped toward the entrance, his smug, practiced composure instantly shattering into sheer, unadulterated shock. His eyes widened, his jaw slacking as if he had just seen a ghost walk straight out of the Atlantic Ocean.

“Mabel…?” Marcus gasped, rising from his chair in disbelief.

I walked directly down the center of the room, flanked by two armed federal marshals and Special Agent Miller. I was wearing an impeccably tailored ivory power suit, my posture rigid, my eyes locked dead onto Julian Vance’s throat.

“I apologize for my delayed arrival,” I said smoothly, dropping Flynn’s black leather ledger onto the center of the mahogany table with a thunderous thud. “My honeymoon was cut slightly short due to a minor case of attempted murder.”

Julian’s face went from pale white to an ugly, mottled crimson. He quickly tried to recover his posture, straightening his tie with trembling fingers. “Mabel… this is an incredible relief. We were told… there was a horrific maritime accident. We were merely trying to protect your family’s enterprise during this incomprehensible tragedy—”

“Save it, Julian,” I cut him off, stepping straight into his personal space at the head of the table. “Flynn Sterling just signed a full thirty-page federal confession in Miami two hours ago. Aidan and Fiona gave up the encrypted server addresses within forty minutes of hitting the interrogation room. We have every wire transfer from your offshore shell accounts in Grand Cayman directly to the hitmen hired to run my parents off the road in Aspen.”

Special Agent Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his tactical belt.

“Julian Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, securities fraud, and racketeering,” Miller announced firmly.

“This is an outrage! You have no legal jurisdiction to interrupt a private corporate proceeding!” Julian roared, backing away toward the windows, his aristocratic veneer completely evaporating into manic desperation. “My attorneys will have this thrown out in twenty minutes! You have no direct evidence tying me to those incompetent idiots!”

“Actually, we have your private voice notes,” I replied with a cold, triumphant smile. “Flynn was a coward, Julian. He recorded every single phone call you ever made to him, just in case he needed leverage. He saved them on the exact same hard drive he used to steal my father’s trust codes.”

Two federal marshals grabbed Julian’s arms, twisting them violently behind his back. The sickening metallic snap of the handcuffs echoed across the silent boardroom. The board members sat in stunned, terrified silence, watching the most feared hedge fund manager in the United States get pushed down onto the conference table and searched like a common street criminal.

I leaned down close to his ear as they hoisted him back to his feet. “You told Flynn that the sea would take care of the rest. But you forgot one simple rule of business, Julian: never bet against the bloodline that built the empire.”

They dragged Julian Vance out of the boardroom in full view of two hundred employees, his frantic screams echoing all the way down the glass corridor toward the elevators.

I took my seat at the head of the mahogany table, looking at the eleven terrified board members who had been seconds away from betraying my family.

“Now,” I said, resting my hands flat on the polished wood. “Let’s talk about who else in this room was planning to vote yes.”
